Brauner: the Art of Microphones

Mas Acoustics presents a documentary film that takes us directly into the heart of Brauner Microphones. The Art of Microphones is a journey in which we discover the artistic essence that emanates from the realization of the (possibly) best recording microphones in the world.
This film interlaces production process sequences with the answers that Dirk Brauner offers to some of our eternal questions. Is it worth using a tube preamp with a tube microphone?, What Brauner differs from its competitors? ...
The manufacturing process of high-quality microphones is a mixture of high precision machines with very experienced hands. The process begins with a simple metal tube which, according to Dirk, "hides several microphones; all they need to do is just take them out".

Inspirational. That's what it is to watch people dedicated to quality and longevity of a product, instead of cost or market share. I read a short article on the last page of Mix this month (August 2017) on the value of quality, and it could easily have been describing Mr. Brauner's standards here. There is a place for "just as good as" equipment, and there is a place for top notch gear. Hat's off to those who make the gear we aspire to own and create with, who believe that last 10% is worth chasing.

Dirk Brauner is one of the finest people I have ever met. He genuinely loves microphones and I believe no one makes microphones any better than his. I have several Brauner mics and love them. Solid state or vacuum tube, Brauner mics are first rate.

I've bought some years ago a Brauner Phantom AE (anniversary edition) which is solid state and am very happy with it. The build quality is great. And I had the chance of recording an album for my friend in a studio where they had Brauner VM1, or was it VMX. I forgot. That thing sounded amazing! Great work mr. Dirk!

Fantastic overview of your design philosophy and your facility and processes. One thing, we didn't get to HEAR the microphone, although possibly the Brazilian music was mic'ed with your microphone. A few more examples would be wonderful.

After watching this documentary I decided to pull the trigger on a used VM1. I have not received it yet but I am looking forward to seeing and using it. Apparently it was serviced and sat in its box after having new capsule so I’m hoping it’s going to give me years of use. Loved the detail that goes into manufacturing these microphones and I feel confident on my used purchase as I trust what I’ve seen in this video. Great watch and very educational. Thanks

I recently bought a new VM1 that became faulty in transit. I have to say the level of service I received from my U.K. supplier (Red Dog) and especially Brauner, was exceptional. Dirk dealt with the issue personally, and was in contact with me throughout - exceptionally professional. The mic I've ended up with is superb, like a super high quality camera lens. If you have a good EQ you can manipulate this sound to be exactly what you want it to be, there are never nasty surprises of gritty artefacts when you lift a frequency band. I've also worked with the VMX - that's a fire-breathing mic! I did an experiment to see if I could EQ the VMX to impersonate my old U67 - bingo, all the necessary information and warmth was there, cut some highs, little 1k push and you could hardly tell them apart! Then had to reverse it all as the VMX with no EQ sounds a lot better than the 67 with no EQ straight off!

Great mics but only useful in good rooms with good acoustic. If the room is boomy or has a hall reverb then you will get a shock ! These mics do not forgive ! They take everything !
