Some people say sand cause the ocean has it. The ocean also has sharks, jellyfish and other things that are not going in my tank. My little reef has a place for little critters to live, it's a refugium and that has sand. My reef depicts a specific reef face biotope...no sand there. So I think it depends what you wanna create...your vision and our endeavours bring that to life. Surely it is why this hobby rocks

Looking forward to seeing how well the XLM works. As much as I like a bare bottom, that aquascape would showcase better in sand. Y'all have a safe and entertaining trip👍

I’d do the sand. I went bare bottom and it took longer to cycle and I hated cleaning the diatom algae on the bottom panel. And reef saavy not to far from me so have a safe trip.

LPS REEFER trust me been reefing over 20 years an once you take the sand out you will have problems not saying you can’t do it but I wouldn’t start with it like that an even after it’s going an running an if you take it out you will still have problems till it gets stable so it’s a lot of work . It will work at some point but not without the work put in . This is for the more advance reefer in my opinion that’s is willing to put the time an work in knowing what there getting into it can be down but just not for a beginner . Just an opinion like I said cause I have done it . It works but you better know how to handle it .it doesn’t go over just easy. Also let me say Iam not saying Rico can’t make it happen Iam just saying for someone just starting in the hobby cause the problems you will have will make you give up real quick . This hobby isn’t easy an it’s not cheap by no means at all . Just don’t want to see someone fail thats just getting started . It can be done though . Happy reefing an good luck to all this is the best hobby ever just take your time .. 👍

@@fishbate2509 I agree. Years ago, I was having problems with cyno so I took all my sand out in portions. But when I finally took it all out. My tank seemed to crash. If I would go BB it would be from the start of the setup. Some ppl will have success doing it but every tank is different from various reasons.

Have a tank full of Carib Sea Life Rock and I used Turbo Start 900 and my tank was cycled within a week. I did not see any adverse affects from the bacteria on the rock and the Turbo Start 900 bacteria. The only kick on Life Rock that I have read about is that it takes longer for the rock to become live. That may or may not be true but after 7 months, my rock is definitely live and thriving along with the entire tank. As far as the sand goes, I would never run a tank without sand. That is just a personal opinion. The ocean has sand...tanks should have what they are trying to replicate.

I say add sand. It's on the Ocean floors so to me mother nature add the perfect combination salt water and sand is like eggs and bacon. Or in my case eggs and refried beans a beautiful combination that satisfied important needs. Appreciate all your videos sir

Bare bottom tanks are just wayyy more easy to keep nutrients low and detritus suspended in water column. Tanks seem way more successful “usually” with sps having bare bottom. Jason Fox has never used sand, and had said he never finds corals where there’s sand. Just my 2 cents!

I have both a sand tank and a bare bottom tank. The sand looks soooo much better!! The bare bottom tank is easier to clean. Tough call, but I like the aesthetics personally. So my vote is for sand. :)

Guy at WWC talked a lot about this. No sand is definitely less stable unless you have sand or equivalent in a remote location attached to the system. Also the light reflection factor plays into it. Not to mention it just looks better. All the KZreadrs and hobbyist who are honest show and tell how they have stability issues with birthday suit tanks. I did my latest in sand six months ago and so far no hair algae, no cyano and my diatom bloom only lasted 2 weeks. Maybe I'm wrong but sanddddd

Personally I don't think bare bottom tanks look finished. I can understand doing it if you are going strictly sps with only utilitarian fish. If you are trying to have a truly diverse system I feel like sand is a necessity. Really it depends on what you want to keep in the tank and the style system you want to have.

Sand sand sand sand! lol I don't know I just feel its not the same without....although I will say I will never buy Pink Fiji sand again ugh huge newbie mistake blows every where and I have scratched the glass because of it very frustrating. Only plus is that this tank is not my forever one and I will be going with a heavier sand. Even with that said I think my tank will always have sand but it is a lot of personal preference. I would think that sand will help out with a nice place for bacteria to grow though.
