Video games featuring cartoon characters, particularly those from the Disney pantheon, were a prevalent and successful genre throughout the days of the 16-bit consoles. With bright colours, family-friendly gameplay and a wealth of material to draw upon, they were an easy sell to gamers and, invariably, were among some of the best games available.
As I recall, there was a fair amount of hype surrounding Mickey Mania: The Timeless Adventures of Mickey Mouse in the run up to it's launch. With bold graphics and detailed animation, the game was intended to be as close to an interactive Disney cartoon as possible.
The game stars Mickey Mouse who revisits some of the most famous cartoons from his past. Each of the game's levels features artwork, characters and themes from each cartoon, including a version of Mickey as he appeared in the animated feature.
The game launched on the Sega Mega Drive and SNES initially, with an enhanced version for the Mega CD appearing slightly later. Traveller's Tales would re-release the game for the Sony PlayStation in 1996 under the new title of Mickey's Wild Adventure, featuring enhanced graphics, animation and even better audio than the Mega CD version. I'll be releasing videos of each of these versions over the coming weeks, so you'll be able to compare the strengths and weaknesses of each version.
The game itself is fairly typical run 'n jump platform affair where Mickey must navigate his way through a series of interconnected levels, defeating enemies by jumping on them and collecting power-ups to stay alive. In addition to the usual "butt-stomp" method of dispatching opponents, Mickey can also collect and throw marbles to deal with foes at range.
The game features excellent controls that are responsive and simple to master. The developers added a slight sense of weight and momentum to Mickey as he moves in believable fashion, yet leaves the player in total control. I've played many platform games where poor controls lead to many a frustrating death, but I'm pleased to say that this is not the case with Mickey Mania.
As previously mentioned, the game features some excellent graphics and animation for the time. The main Mickey sprite boasts and impressive number of frames for each of the character's animations, really giving the sense that this is proper Disney cartoon and not just a video game. Attention to detail is extremely high as you'll see that the animators even included the streaks and lines typically added to convey the sense of rapid motion when a character moves, which is a really neat touch.
The game also features a decent soundtrack (Matt Furniss) and there are some great digitised speech samples from Mickey as he reacts to what is going on around him. Obviously, the CD versions of the games are even better in this regard, but the Mega Drive version sounds really good.
It is with a slight sense of disappointment, then, that the actual gameplay is somewhat run-of-the-mill; this is no Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario World. I feel that the level designers struggled to create enough material for some of the levels (Moose Hunters), whilst others drag on a little too much and begin to outstay their welcome (Mad Doctor). The game is solid enough, but there really isn't much variety beyond avoiding enemies and making it to the end of the level.
Ultimately, the game is still a solid platform game that you'll enjoy, particularly if you're a fan of Disney characters. If only more time had been spent on content and gameplay than the artwork then this would be one of the best 16-bit platform games available.

(13:45) My favorite music piece from this game. The good old days of playing this on the classic 16-Bit Sega Genesis aside from just Sonic. Mickey games were out of this world for me growing up. Never realized the hidden areas and stage back then.

What a great video! I remember I used to play this game in 1994 on my mega drive and I enjoyed it so much I still remember I was amazed by it. Later I was playing the PlayStation One version but somehow I didn't feel that game but now I'm watching this video and truly reExperiencing the magic of this game!

A technical marvel and one of the absolute best-looking and sounding games of its era! And the Mega Drive or Mega-CD versions are sooo much better than the SNES one, as often with multiplatform games :) btw, taking a quick glance at the description, but I wouldn't use Donkey Kong Country as reference to great gameplay... Super Mario World though, NOW yes! (or Sonic the Hedgehog, Kid Chameleon, Ristar and many others although Mickey Mania is still pretty good in that regard)

Only Sega fanboys are capable to say this game is superior than Donkey Kong Country. But, who cares? It's envy. About this game, great! It's the main thing genesis was capable, but it's better to watch in mute, cause the sound effects that are too crappy, as usual in genesis.

@@agapitojuliano5517 your comment is a fail in every ways :D I have better things to do but still, just for fun: 1° who said that "this game is superior than Donkey Kong Country"? 2° and even if someone said that, it wouldn't be more nor less wrong than saying that DKC is better than this game. the SNES DKC games have great atmosphere but aren't particularly great games 3° envy? mouahahaha. I had both DKC 1 and 2 back then. as I said great atmosphere but not much else to say and I'd much rather play super mario world, ristar or any sonic games 4° the main thing genesis was capable? the genesis AKA mega drive can do many things that the SNES cannot despite being released 2 years before and being less expensive :D 5° as usual? there are PLENTY of mega drive games with great sound effects. you are just deaf or too salty to acknowledge it

Great video. This game has some of the best 2D animation I've seen in any game. And well played. You made it look easy. But you always seem to do that! :) How much practicing do you typically have to do, before recording your videos and how many "takes" do you go through? What hardware / sofware did you play this on? What did you ouput to? How did you record it?

  • @AL82RetrogamingLongplays

    @AL82RetrogamingLongplays

Glad you enjoyed the video! Hope the following answers your queries: Practice: I don't tend to practice, but if I mess up/miss too much content then I will start over. I generally read guides for information on hidden areas/secrets/strategies if the game features them. Takes: depends on the game and how happy I am with the captured footage - if I don't think it's entertaining/complete enough then I'll re-record sections until I'm happy with it. Software/Recording: BizHawk emulator with built in pixel-perfect AVI recording for capture (Lagarith lossless video codec). I then upscale the footage to roughly 720p using H.264 with a CRF of 10 before uploading to KZread.

Interesting. I've been playing with emultors for years, but I'd never heard of BizHawk. So I gave it a try. It's quite impressive. I generally go for filters that give a more "authentic CRT" look when actually playing on emulators. But for recording and playback on a variety of unknown devices, at various resoutions, I suppose it's safer to stick with the cleanest look possible. BizHawk certainly seems to do that. Looks like this one will take quite some time to fully explore... Thanks. :)

Huh - I had never known about that bonus warp at 23:34! Seems it's based on the short "The Band Concert," which was the first Mickey short film in color. Makes me wonder if they had intended to make a full level based on it, and then, not wanting to scrap the stuff in that hurricane segment, kept it in as a secret.
