Michel van der Aa - Spaces of Blank (2007)
00:00 I. Somber brass blocks vaporize in a stratosphere of high-frequency electronica and cool, soft strings.
01:19 Emily Dickinson "From Blank to Blank". The music takes on a nervous energy. Frantic string and woodwind runs
03:41 Rozalie Hirs "Empty I stumble upon my last angel" (5:35) A luscious yet piercing chorale
08:30 II. Dickinson "Solitude of space". Soft, anxious counterpoint of strings and voice; striking interruptions of percussion and electronics (10:49) (11:54) Violent winds and electronic scramble end the poem
12:17 Anne Carson "Why did I awake lonely". Pensive arpeggiated chords, nervous shaking strings (14:46) Fierce horn soli among violent brass strings
15:45 A slow and mysterious ending, prominently featuring 2 vibraphones
17:56 III. Rapid buzzing of strings and electronics. Warm brass, but their disjointed entrances only add upon the anxiety (19:00) Hirs "Here is a white space"
21:37 Sweet and luminous, almost meditative among gongs and woodblocks
23:31 An anxious chorale, slowly growing to an enormous intensity, and suddenly cutting out to (25:28) an utterly lonely ending: singer alone with distant high-frequency ambient sounds

While you're here, I'd like to shout out Michel van der Aa's amazing album Time Falling. Van der Aa's use of electronics especially is astounding, and it extends really well into his non-classical music kzread.info/dash/bejne/opqbp9B-YMfHlLQ.html
Amazing. Thanks for the terrific presentation as always.
Wonderful work from Michael!
Merci Cmaj7 pour cette nouvelle découverte musicale !..
This is a very attractive score of totally forgettable music. It serves as a wonderful vehicle for the mezzo soprano but I understood only about 10% of what she sang.

you comment so often about how you dislike things, is there any music you actually enjoy?

I actually enjoyed this score but could not remember anything that had transpired. There is a lot of music that I enjoy but it usually has wonderful melodies or intriguing harmonies. Music modern modern has done away with melody, regular rhythmic patterns, and harmonic progressions and end up much like fireworks--exciting while it is going on but no emotional content connects you to the work.@@elijahstewart3231
