0:30 Porter is an aerospace engineer by training 8:45 The essence of strategy = how are we UNIQUE? Strategy is about competing to be _unique._ 11:50 The vision is the GOAL. The strategy is HOW to get there. Strategy is ultimately holistic. 1:03:00 Zero-sum competition (me-too, race to the bottom) 1:07:30 Maintain discipline to resist the “gravitational pull” of operations. Strategy is tested every day.

This is very informative and an eye opener to the project management community because this area is often overlooked and not given the attention it deserves. Basically, the project team assumes that the approved business case has been aligned to the corporate strategy and ready for execution. The focus is mainly on reviewing and validating the relevance of the business need during project development to ensure alignment with overall changes in strategy. Professor makes reference to very valid points that if there are changes in the value chain of service delivery, the need for the project needs to be reviewed to ensure that there is alignment with the new operational model.

This is an amazing presentation that takes a close examination at the importance of a company’s ability to strategize. First, Michael Porter goes about his presentation in an extremely strong manner and forces the audience to absorb his information as a result of his tone. He is excited about the information he is sharing and backs up his ability to present with well-constructed data. He observes the importance of planning and how each member of an organization plays an essential role in the overall development of a company. I found his points of competitive advantage and value chain to be one of the most impactful aspects of his presentation. He uses personal examples and real-world scenarios to support his claims at how to organize and effect company. Michael Porter analyzes some of the world’s most impactful and organized companies and examines what they do that is so unique and successful. He points out what successful companies do well and what other companies of all sizes can do to attempt to find their competitive advantage as well. I greatly enjoyed the information presented throughout this speech and truly believe I can apply these methods to my own path in the world of business.

Wow great hearing and seeing Dr. Porter again. I am a retired associate professor of strategy who was trained at LSU in Baton Rouge with his ideas, and am only three years younger than Dr. Porter. I am also an undergraduate in Civii Engineering and Construction Management from the same institution where we did a lot of project management in our studies and with general contractors as on the job training. I also worked in some global company's strategy department's where I used project management a lot. I am not PMI certified but I could have been years ago. The thing Dr. Porter could have included in the video (it did not show the Q and A period) was how do you really align your projects so that they are supporting in a connected an holistic way to your department's success and the organization's competitive advantage. An approach could be to include a crisp statement in your Project Charter as to how this project contributes to the Value Proposition of your business unit and its Value Chain. It would include more than this obviously, but this alignment presupposes as Dr. Porter suggests actually communicating the strategy far and wide. A bit Polyannish I realize, but this has worked for my on dozens of client engagements.

Sonja Cossio: This is an enjoyable and entertaining video. Professor Porter is clear and honest in his delivery of how management may not possess the necessary communication skills to share the organization's strategy throughout each level. The preferred communication method, regarding strategy is a continuous feedback loop. The loop is key in highlighting the employee experience at any level of the organization. The overall point of strategy looks at the big picture and the organization's ability and readiness to deal with external issues. A business can use strategy as a series of choices and action steps to be carried out in the form of projects, assignments and programs. These are useful for teaching and training all employees throughout an organization to become more effective as a matter of business normalcy. Participation in the planning in teams and selling the plan to other teams, while getting buy in along the way is a better strategy than spending more money and effort on expensive methods of entering data to measure resource allocation. Overall, Professor Porter reiterated what I learned in Business Policy during undergrad.

According to me a tradeoff Idea/strategy in this lecture is very practical and needs to understand in broad sense: Making the "Set of customers unhappy" and at the same time making another set of customers Happy" is one the very practical points in today's era. Pleasing everyone is not desirable for sustainable profitability. Be Choosee in the selection of a set of customers once select the market and form a customer base!

Good .. but a bit long presentation.. However - a few comments.. Two means of growing profit/positioning are mentioned; be cheap or produce high quality (or both but this is difficult..) - but what about expanding in the market (e.g. by branding,) explore new products or new markets - (ANSOF matrix approach). Also one thing I would really like to get addressed - but is missing.. When you have a startup; you can be agile and targeted and do a strategic positioning.. However; When you are a well established company with a broad coverage of products in your market - should you start cutting markets/segments/products in order to become a more target/differentiated position.. consequently actually shrinking your business.. What if you are in a contented (profit)shrinking industry - do you have a choice? Basically - my point is it is easy when you grow/startup to decide direction; if you are already all-over I think it is a much more challenging situation; both in terms of how agile you are and what is actually smart to do..

Strategy for the company is to be part of the strategy to change the previous thought process. Now how to treat those implementing to certain and wide range. Thinking it's breaking so far away from religion and fear that people are not leaving the cave holding onto miracle (which I do believe) by percentage. In doing so goals^^ is to be aware I can see more goals from those goals ( farmer buys land, profits it, grows, turns it into a fully functioning town. How did the first settlers of new Amsterdam(new york) profit from island not on ocean but islands great for productivity protecting the main industrial profit, Manhattan. So I assume they sailed from long & Staten island and noticed splitting rivers and soon state. Hudson and jersey. Basically, if gangs of new York had structured Way of means, enlightened would be part of the stand up handshake so we all grow. Sure TV would of been pushed back a few years butbcomputer would of been pushed forward . (Or computer gets built before TV and we change....never having a laugh track!!.)

So Michael Porter is advising everybody to become a niche supplier? His notion of strategy seems like he wants companies to find and target specific subsets of people and reach them with a special version of a common product (if we ignore total innovations) that best fits their needs. This proposition is very much aligned to the theory that Capitalism will not only remove scarcity but will effectively fulfill every imaginable demand. However, companies can go way broader, can't they? It isn't always good to go niche, as far as I have heard. Hard to bring these two notions together.

Although Michael's books speak of management and the five forces that govern a successful company, This does not add in any way to the traditional understanding of costing, raw materials, sales etc. What could be told in a paragraph, he has told in 800 pages. I would instead recommend peter drucker's innovation and entrepreneurship, where he describes the need for & methods of launching a successful product and at what conjectures in history to launch it.
