Good victory of Michael Nunn,I thought he would become the new Leonard but after his K.O. against Toney,his carreer as a Top Fighter stopped and he became for 2 years a good supermiddleweight champion of the world but not more.

Curry was a great fighter before the wheels came off his career!!! Donald should be remembered more than he is! Michael Nunn was the best fighter in the world for a little while! Till James lights out TONEY put his lights out!!! Good fight though!!! Sad how Michael Nunn ended up.

Not really as decisively as people think. They fought in Davenport Iowa, Nunn's hometown. The commentators were on some home cooking BULLSHIT, especially Cindy Barton... terrible! She gave Nunn the first nine rounds. I gave him the first six. Seven could've gone either way and eight through eleven were ALL Toney.

Nunn got hit more in this fight than any other fight previously. Toney took note and seen that the smaller Curry was able to land the left hook. James was a good boxer/puncher and middleweight.

I don't agree with that tbh. Even in recent interviews Curry pretty much dismisses the Honeyghan fight, treats it almost like it wasn't a genuine defeat. He didn't know who Honeyghan was beforehand and writes the loss off as a mistake on his part, due to the weight problems and managerial chaos that was revolving around him at that time. I think his attitude to the whole fiasco was shown by him staying on his stool - as undefeated, undisputed world champion - after round 6. It's like he figured that he could just sit the fight out and then move up to light middleweight, which he was planning to do before being talked into continuing at 147. I think the defeat had a big impact on how he was viewed (as P4P no.1, along with Hagler), but 10 months later when he challenged WBA Champ McCallum up at 154 he was still the odds-on favourite and most expected him to win the title. He appeared as confident as he'd been prior to the Honeyghan defeat, maybe overconfident as it turned out. My view is that that spectacular KO loss affected him far more than the Honeyghan defeat. He'd never again look as elite a fighter as he'd had for those 5 rounds against McCallum. Whether it was down to a lack of dedication, being mentally burned-out with boxing, physical deterioration, whatever all his subsequent setbacks followed a similar pattern: a good start but running out of steam after 6 rounds, then crumbling under fire (vs Nunn and Norris). Curry clams up when asked about his defeats, so we'll never know for sure what the problem is.

Honeyghan pulled Curry’s plug. McCallum (or as Ray Leonard called him, “Mcullen”) removed the wheel. Norris removed the key from the ignition. And Nunn disconnected the battery...

You right about how those 4 fighters dismantling Curry. I never was blown away by Curry's style and felt Sugar Ray Leonard or Tommy Hearns would have knocked Curry out plus I would be surprised if Curry went past 5 rounds with Marvin Hagler

He correctly predicted that Tyson wouldn't last long because his whole defense was based on fast head movement, and that as soon as he lost a fraction of it he'd start getting hit.

Top class coaching by Curry's team. Shouting 'let the right hand go' 90 times every round.

I saw this live in Paris 1990, Nunn was masterful in a great World middleweight contest between Two of the best!!!

A time when these fights were on free tv.. and fighters didn't duck each other

IF YOU LOOK AT THE FIGHT WITH ROY AND NUNN AGAIN. TONEY SLIPPED AND BLOCKED MOST OF THEM PUNCHES. THEY WAS JUST MORE BUSY

Curry before Nunn was thought to be the next superstars in boxing...Two of my favorite fighters they both couldn't get a fight with Leonard who,I believe wanted know part of both of them .They couldn't get a fight with Hearns,Duran or Hagler..I just believe they both lost there focus because they couldn't get a chance to shine..

Nunn used his range as well as any fighter since Ali, IMO.

That statement could be said of The Great Sugar Ray Leonard. A Master Boxer !!! Who pushed his natural size into the heavier divisions with success.

The only thing bigger than Nunn's meteoric rise was his ego. He left the Goossens to start his own organization, a disastrous effort that consisted of "hometown friends" under the advisement of Don King. He was a classic case of "too much, too soon" and lost his dedication and focus, hence why he always struggled to make weight. Many comments here say James Toney ended his career, but that could not be further from the truth. Ultimately, Michael Nunn ruined himself.

4/27/2020 they're talking about Nunn vs Pat Miletich in a kickboxing match.... Nunn is 57 and just out of the pen for a year or so. Roy Jones Jr. also talked about a fight with Nunn.

It looks to me like Nunn is two divisions heavier than Curry. He's taller, his torso is way bigger, and his legs look bigger.

Loved Curry as a younger fighter but he was never the same after McCallum starched him. He basically went down and stayed down in this fight and against Norris.

Nunn was a super talent without chin and adversity. Same goes for Curry who never was the same after McCallum KO loss

Imo from 1988 to 1993 was the greatest crop of Middleweights ever assembled at one time: Nunn, Jones Jr, Jackson, Benn, Kalambay, McClellan, Hopkins, Collins, Toney, Eubanks, Parks and McCallum.

Micheal was slick class. Loved him at his best. Pitty he ended up in prison. Wish him the best now that he is out of incarceration.

Last fight before the loss to James Toney.

Bang on analysis by the late, great Emanuel Steward. Curry did not really look like a middleweight, especially next to a tall, rangy 160lber like Nunn. He was a strange one, because for 6 rounds he looked very good and was ahead on my card 58-56, but completely collapsed in the 7th. Nunn failed to jump on him in the 8th and Curry looked surprisingly fresh again, then the energy just drained away in the 9th. He quit at the end, couldn't get out of the way of Nunn's shots and took a knee, then shook his head at the ref. What happened? If could have kept going like the first 6 rounds he wins this fight, he landed most of the cleaner shots, worked the body, moved into range intelligently but seemed to deflate in round 7, stopped punching and became a stationary target. The shots he went down from were nothing punches, really. The fight was over right then. He looked in great shape, was determined, quick and sharp but there seemed something wrong with him the way he fell apart. It's like it all became too hard all of a sudden. Good to see the great Hagler at ringside. he lived in Italy at the time (maybe still does). He was definitely cheering Curry on. Both shared the Ring magazine Fighter of the Year for 1985 and a fight between the two looked inevitable until Ray Leonard announced his comeback and then Curry lost to Honeyghan.

Excellent analysis.Curry looked a 154 pounder up against a 168pounder which is pretty much what it was. Curry was outclassing a great boxer like Nunn for 6 rounds and was still up after 8 but just ran out of wind which was a problem for him ever since the jacquot fiasco.

Nunn was elite at his very best. Lost focus for a second vs. Lights Out and it was lights out...

Nunn was a very good middleweight in his time.

You could argue great, the way he dispatched the high technical Kalambay ( who was only knocked out by Nunn), knocked out Curtis Parker and Roldan. Before his only knockout loss to Toney was giving him a lesson for about 9 rounds in a classic bout.

Nunn was a good champion, but he was to much confident.. He stay fighting in close range with that reach and speed, wtf. Angelo Dundee goes crazy with that things hahah

I’m a little curious why Bob Arum promoted this fight between two Americans in Paris.

I can watch the build-up, but can't watch the actual fight (though I did at the time as a teenager). I just hate to watch Donald lose.

Curry is not punching when up close.

Donald Curry at one point in time was skilled enough to be considered one of the greats. It was his out of the ring discipline (or lack there of) that cost him down the road. He went down hill before we really could see how great he could have been.

+Alice Jones Really? If Curry was undisciplined, then that's a new one on me. I remember watching Curry in the 80s & 90s, & he always seemed like a well conditioned fighter. His biggest weakness was that he posed too much when he was within punching range, instead of either throwing leather or moving away, & it made him a target, After the Honeyghan fight his opponents caught on to this, & from then on it was never going to be easy for Donald. Why was he undisciplined?

+Alice Jones This is very profound. Both of these guys could of been ATG's. But discipline issues affected both of them. Sometimes it comes down to character and not allowing bad influences to affect them.

Curry quit the same as he did against Honeyghan, it seems he was just a good front runner and not able to dig deep when it wasnt going his way.

As a nunn fan it is extremely frustrating to watch him fight as he was fighting Jesus.

Curry was much too small to be a legitimate threat to Nunn even with his superior punching power. Donald Curry was one hell of a technician in his prime but here he looked unmotivated for some reason. Looked to be winning early then just stopped punching. Hmmm.

Let the right hand go!!! Not good seeing a spent fighting Curry?? I saw the interview he was never the same after Lloyd Honergan beat him. 😢

That's the difference between an elite fighter and a decent one. Nunn had decent speed and size that most opponents were not used to, hard to beat but not because he was really special. Curry was a great fighter with a short prime who burned out quickly. He won most of the rounds before the stoppage while he was past it. He was also beating McCallum before the stoppage and McCallum was much better than Nunn (who was very overrated). I don't understand wtf was Pacheco watching, he was fanboying hard for Nunn.

McCallum knocked him out cold. He was counted out. Not a stoppage. He would have had difficulty surviving against many ko artists like Julian Jackson, McLennan. He had a short prime.

Nunn was a lot more than just "decent", but I do agree that he wasn't the great fighter he was being built up to be in the media after winning the IBF title. Curry was special, you could see that immediately. The McCallum fight was astonishing, the way it ended as Curry was actually dominating after a close opening round. He'd figured McCallum out, hurt him and was totally outboxing him when that left hook came out of nowhere. I think Curry was so on top that he lost concentration for a moment and McCallum was a excellent fighter who took advantage. He'd never throw a better shot for the rest of his career. I agree also on Pacheco (and the judges tbh), who all had Nunn way ahead. I didn't see that at all. I thought Curry won 5 of the first 8 rounds and was even on the cards going into the 10th (95-95). He was still technically an outstanding fighter and a better all-around boxer than Nunn, but a combination of Nunn's size and whatever was causing Curry to falter after around 6 rounds decided the fight.

Curry was a great p4p fighter but after beating from Hunnyghan, was NEVER da same. Brixton man took him apart mentally.

Yes he did. A lot of these "fighters" don't come in ready to lose and when they do they mentally lose and can't recover. Ali, Frazier and other fighters definitely understood that losing was part of the game and recovered from their losses to continue winning.

I hate when Taller fighters try to "Slug it Out" in the Inside w a Shorter fighter, that's NEVER a Good Idea. They Always get Banged Up tryin that, and its exactly what happened to #Anthonyjoshua vs #Andyruiz also, smh. They need to use their "Speed & Arm length", Work the ring around the shorter guy.

Watch the first Curry - Starling fight, for the NABF/USBA domestic titles in 1982: he was an hour late for the weigh-in and had to cut weight on the morning of the fight. I remember Curry training in the UK for the Colin Jones defence in 1985 wearing a plastic suit, in order to sweat off the weight. Whether he was just naturally too big for 147, or was not a dedicated trainer, I don't know but the difficulty he had making weight went back at least 4 years before it caught up with him against Honeyghan

@@Jay73301 I didn't know that. Once Curry lost to Lloyd Honeyghan, he lost his aura, which was unfortunate. Michael Nunn is now out of prison, so that is finally good news for him. He got dealt with very harshly with the sentence he got, but that's the justice system, I guess.

Another vintage dominating performance by Nunn! Never saw the reason for the unnesessary bashing from Nunn's crirics! I loved Graham but no, he never beat a real top fighter, though he was robbed in the Kalambay rematch, in Italy. The first Kalambay fight, he blew it big time by abandoning his normal style and going on the attack, couldn't believe what i was watching. So, no I can't see him beating Nunn. Curry wasn't a middleweight, but - ignoring weight - at their respective peaks Curry would have killed Graham.

Curry was really bad at speaking.

Nunn did 24-years on a 200-dollar drug deal worth 25k on the streets. Curry also had a stint in prison for unpaid child support. Unfortunate outcomes for these once great fighters. I believe Curry is homeless and suffering from CTE today.

@@fuchsiaswing8545 Most of the distribution case against Nunn, from what I can gather came from testimony against him as a dealer going back as far as 1993, from people already serving time (always suspect), plus the judge deciding (with no evidence at all) that Nunn would have used a firearm during transactions, plus the relatively large amount of coke that Nunn attempted to buy (which did point to an intent to sell). This took place in a Midwest state (Iowa) and knowing the way the US justice system works, I doubt that he'd have been sentenced so heavily if he'd been a white defendant tbh. Curry's life took a massive nosedive after the Norris defeat and retirement. He had those legal troubles involving drug distribution, which although acquitted cost him most of the money he'd made in boxing, personal problems (going to jail for failure to pay child support) and ended up with CTE. At least his son is trying to do his best for the old champion and I even heard the WBC were trying to do something for him, medically. So many boxer's stories end up in tragedy, it's demoralizing to see.
