    All the decades that preceeded the 80's were amazing too. If I could pick an era it would be the 40's. If you lived in New York you could see multiple matches just about every night of the week. There were 4000 registered Welterweights alone in New York in the 40's. There were big gyms, boxing was front page news, and the best boxer ever was fighting twice a month. To see Sugar Ray as a Welterweight. The best ever in his prime, man I wish I could have seen him! At one point he was 128-1-1 with 84 koes!!!

    Donald Curry was a good fighter; a very good fighter but he does not deserve to be in the hall of fame!!! With the exception of Marlon Starling, Milton McCory, and Roger Stafford, he not only lost all his other big fights, but lost in devasting fashion!!! Lloyd Honeygan was a very ordinary fighter!!! As far as I am concerned, he was exposed when he moved up in weight. Emanuel Steward was a very smart trainer. He did not believe Curry would burn himself out for a second. He told his guy that as a way to encourage him. Good chief seconds know what to say to motivate their fighters. Curry was loading up and firing bombs from the beginning but the majority were landing and thus taking a bigger toll on McCroy than himself. Punches that miss tend to tire a fighter more. But Curry wasted no punches and was working the body well. A couple of shots were slightly below the belt but definitely not intentional. Curry was trying to land right on the belt. Leonard was spot on in his commentary and no doubt knew Curry was in total control. After his first retirement he predicted that Curry would emerge as his successor at welterweight. Starling was his biggest competition at the time and Curry and Starling had two great fights. They first was very close with Curry barley getting the win but Curry was more convincing in the rematch and in my opinion was the beggining of his short prime. From Starling 2 till the McCroy fight Curry was at the top of his game. A lot of factors lead to his quick fall. Yes struggling to make weight was part of it. But boxing is as much psychological as physical and Curry never was the same after his first loss. Some fighters never rebound. But it is easy to forgot that for short time he was great. Also did anyone else hear that hook land? You could hear the sound of leather against McCroy's face. And like so many have said the fight should have not been allowed to continue after that. McCroy could have been killed or suffered serious brain trauma because he was basically defenseless when Curry just walked over and hit him with a hard right. And the fact that the ref actually started counting instead of immediately stopping it and getting the doctor in the ring was crazy. Thankfully McCroy was ok though. I wonder if Steward ever said anything about the fight bring allowed to continue. Of course he could have "thrown in the towel" but it was literally only a second or 2 from the time the decision to let the fight continue till McCroy was unconscious on the canvas. As a Fort Worth native and a not real good amateur boxer myself, I can tell you the the left hook is favorite punch in that area from virtually all the boxing clubs. I had friends from other areas and they said it was less of a focus and jabs/crosses were the bigger focus. This was the late 70's to early 80's. Gorman's team was just called Gorman Masonry Boxing Club. They trained at the Golden Gloves Youth Center along side several other amateur clubs at that time. They held their tournaments at Panther Boys Club which was a huge boxing club in Fort Worth. I have extremely fond memories of both fights and friendships and yes I actually got to watch Donald spar often from 79 to 80. Unfortunately we boycotted the Olympics that year. I have no doubt he would have won gold.

    He should have moved up in weight after this fight. He had been struggling to make 147 for a while . How much of that was his natural growth vs. liking to eat I didn't know. I am sure is was a little of both. But starving to make weight combined with all of his out of the ring distractions were too much. And he never was the same after that first loss. If he could have rebound psychologically then perhaps he beats McCallum and perhaps eventually gets a big money fight. Prime for prime I would probably pick Leonard, Hearns and Hagler over Curry but I would give him a good chance against Leonard and Hearns. But the thing is in 1986 Leonard and Hagler were slightly past prime and Hearns seemed to be as well. So a very prime Curry against a past prime one of the big 3's might have been interesting. The only way he could have beaten Hearns would have been to knock him out and Hearns did not have a great chin. But to do that he would have to get past one of the best jabs ever and be at risk from Tommie's deadly right. But if it went the distance Hearns wins on points for sure. Leonard would be interesting. Curry was just as fast as Benitez and had a defense almost as good. But the huge difference is Curry had real power which Benitez lacked. Trading blows with Curry would be a big mistake. In 1985 I am not sure if Ray would beat Donald. In his one comeback fight he did not look very impressive. It would have been a great one for sure. Donald was great for a short time and other than Starling had no real competition during his prime. Some of the fighters were good but not great. Jones cut to easy and that Italian dude was fast but could not take Donald's power. And we know McCroy had some fundamental flaws that Curry easily took advantage of. Dropping the right every time he jabed made him an easy target for the left hook. He actually got nailed by one in the first round as well. It was not nearly as perfect as the one in round 2 but McCroy was hurt by it.

    @@bobbywise2313Wow, you know your welterweight boxing, that’s for sure! I agree with you on Don giving Leonard & Hearns (& Benitez) hard, competitive fights. At the time (in boxing, a lot of its to do with timing too), the only member of the Fab 5, I would have put good money on to beat Curry was the Marvelous One, Hagler was just too big & too strong (basically, too much of a natural middleweight) for Curry to beat. Also, Curry often negated his smart boxing style to try to knock opponents out (eg with McCallum) & this would have resulted in a loss for Don - as we all know Hagler was not a man who could be knocked out.

  • @bobbywise2313

    @bobbywise2313

    @@arjunakorale6166 Yes Hagler would have been too strong. But the Hagler that lost to Leonard had slowed significantly. He might have done pretty good againt that Hagler. But the Hagler from a couple of years early would have knocked Curry out. I am so torn and conflicted with Don. He was my idol growing up from his amateur years all the way to being welterweight champion. I do believe he was close to being an all time great fighter. But due to starving himself to make weight and having the flu he lost his title in the worst way. The problem is he never was the same after that loss. This happens to a lot of fighters. Part of what makes a fighter great is how well they bounce back after a loss. Hearns, Leonard and Hagler all had losses that they shook of and bounced back from. To be fair the only fighter to really beat Hagler in the ring was Will the Worm Monroe. .Hagler avenged that loss very well though. Leonard bounced back after losing in Montreal and Hearns became an even better fighter after Leonard 1. But Curry was mentally just not the same after his first defeat. That is probably why I rank him pretty high on all time great welterweights but probably not top 10. At his absolute best I am not sure that all of the top 10 could have beaten him though.

    Dangerous refereeing by Lane here. The fact he allowed Milton continue after the first knockdown was bad enough but he actually started to count after the 2nd killer knockdown. This was reminiscent of Tyson-Berbick when he followed Trevor around and was counting as that dude struggled to get up, fell down and struggled again to stand up. He probably would have allowed it continue had Berbick somehow managed to take more than three steps before tumbling again.

    Donald Curry was one of the most self absorbed fighters I have ever seen. He incessantly talked about himself in the third person but so did other fighters like Michael Nunn. But in the interview when he talked about his brother's placement in a mental hospital and his sister dying in an accident it is viewed as an inconvenience to him.

    Despite this loss Milton McCrory was a World Class Boxer. As a fighter it's not easy to compile a 27-0-1 (22 KOs) record, especially back then. I believe the contrast in persona may have given Curry an edge. Both were Fine Fighters.

    Mills Lane sucks as a ref and this fight shows it. The left hook by Curry floored Milton McCory. Then he got up and went down again because his legs didnt work and his brain was short circuited. So why would Mill Lane allow him to take the final right?!? The answer to that question is because Mills Lane is inept.

  • @JT-jn4mf

    Most will disagree but McCrory's (obviously before the KO) timing was much better in the second round and he landed a few good shots himself. McCrory didn't have great hand speed but did have solid footwork and moved well. He had Curry lunging a bit as well as a little off-balance early in the second (which rarely if ever happened in a Curry fight - Curry was always an extremely controlled and well-disciplined fighter). I think if (and will agree it was a big if after that first round) McCrory could have gotten into the second half of the fight he would have had a shot.

    @@Belburg I was a huge fan of Donald. I was an amateur boxer about 5 years his junior and no where near his level. But I trained at the Golden Gloves Youth center which is where all the Gorman Masonry fighters trained back then. A lot of different boxing clubs trained there. So I got to watch him spar a lot. I have no doubt he would have won gold in 1980 if we had not boycotted the Olympics. The interesting thing about him as a pro is how short his prime was. I would say from Starling 2 till this fight was pretty much it. His pro fights before the rematch with Starling were not nearly as impressive. He seemed to be more aggressive and dance less after there first fight and his power was really impressive. He was struggling to make weight for while before his first loss. But to be fair part of being great is how you rebound from a loss and he was never the same after that. At his best he was a great welterweight in my opinion but he will never be mentioned as being in the category of Robinson, Leonard or Hearns. But at the same time I fell if we just look at him at his best he ranks very high amongst the welterweights. I can only think of a few that I would favor over peak Curry. The 3 I mentioned would definitely be favored over him but it gets harder after that to say I would definitely favor one over him at his best.
