    I'm a pengwing. My feet stick out at an angle and I waddle with the outer part of my heel hitting the floor and the outer part of my foot doing most of the donkey work. He's a toe walker, meaning his heel won't hit the floor 'naturally' and a large part of his foot won't hit the floor at all. Ironically, I also wear orthotics and part of my physiotherapy is toe walking.

    @@ZarlanTheGreen I remember being told in primary school, when we first started doing races, that you should start on the balls of your feet and leaning forward when you're building up speed, but then once you've got to that speed you should straighten up and go heel to toe

  • @ZarlanTheGreen

    @ZarlanTheGreen

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@lisahenry20 Yeah, that's due to certain people thinking that would be better, than the way that people were _naturally_ running (balls landing first) ...and creating shoes *_that would make that possible._* (most people would never do this, never bear with doing it, without shoes specifically made to allow for it ...like most modern shoes) This was, however, pure speculation with *_NO_* actual evidence behind it. There has, since, been plenty of studies. Studies that show that notion to be completely wrong, as well as showing the countless aspects of our bodies that help with natural running, and the countless problems inherent in heel-striking. There continues to be *_ZERO_* evidence, to support a heel-striking running gait There is plenty of evidence against it, however. (on a similar note: There is a study that goes through all of the scientific literature, for any evidence that modern shoes provide any benefit, in speed, efficiency, safety... and found that there was *_not a single paper,_* showing anything of the kind. Not even a small, poorly done, study. Nothing) If you want to *_fundamentally change how your body operates,_* compared to what it is naturally and instinctively meant/made/apt to do, how our evolution "means" for us to operate, then you should have a very good reason. Have solid evidence. Here, the opposite is true.

Honestly, that's not even the weirdest part of my walk, since I walk with my feet turned out in first position, I've been asked how I dont fall over/ twist my ankle (I've twisted it multiple times) so my walks even more messed up than his somehow

    After about ten years of training in two different martial arts systems - both of which emphasized sliding movements that kept the feet in near constant contact with the ground - I ended up with a fairly aberrant, according to my doctor, walk. Her opinion, though, was that it was actually a lower impact gait than what is termed normal gait. I do have to focus more on lightening my gait when I dance than most, I suppose, but I like my gliding gait.

    At every stage, he walks heel-to-toe. No exceptions. And there is nothing _wrong_ about walking toe first, anyway. (a bit less efficient, but...) As for running: Running heel first, *_is utterly and completely unnatural and unhealthy!_* These are clear and indisputable *_scientific facts!_* Also, having strong calves is fine.

    The padding in the heel of shoes is to reduce the shock felt from running on your heels.

    @@vimtheprotogen2855 As various studies have shown, padding does *_nothing_* when running/jumping (those are, biomechanically, the same), as you simply land even harder, to compensate. (as you need some feedback, and the padding stops you from feeling anything) Landing with the balls of your feet, avoids the problem completely ...along with countless other problems, as well as having countless benefits. We are *_meant_* to land with the balls of our feet. There are countless aspects of the structure/"design" of our body, that is there for that specific purpose. Landing on the heel, fucks that up, and causes tons of issues. Heel-striking nullifies much of the features of the body, that cushions/absorbs the energy of the landing (and uses it, when lifting the foot), properly distributes the forces (which also prevents strain, injury. and the like), keeps the body stable/mobile (which also prevents accidents), and various other things. Most modern shoes, also nullifies a lot of those kinds of features of the body, as well as fucking up ones posture, and encouraging (subconsciously) heel-striking (such that many will heel-strike, even if they try not to. Even if they don't think they are) This leads to running that is not only more inefficient and unstable, but also more prone to strain, injury, accidents... (especially in the feet, legs, knees, and back) There are large amounts of science, that clearly demonstrates this to be the case ...and *_ZERO_* evidence, and I mean literally *_not a single bit,_* in the defence of heel-striking, or for the notion that modern shoes or insoles are helpful in any way (speed, efficiency, comfort, safety, injury and/or accident reduction... etc) Well insoles may be helpful for certain specific conditions (i.e. only for people with notably unnormal feet. Who often can't stand/walk/run in a natural way, anyway), but aside from that... P.S. walking is a very different thing from running. Normal walking, on safe and stable ground, is most naturally and normally done, heel first. That is what it most efficient ..but there is nothing really wrong with landing with the balls of your feet. It is more safe, stable, and easier to quickly change directions from (though on stable ground, things are generally safe and stable enough, anyway) ...and when walking on uncertain ground, or trying to be silent, you instinctively walk on the balls of your feet, as that is best for such circumstances. Also, padding does have an effect, when you walk or stand. (though I'd still generally advise against it, due to the loss of feeling) Going barefoot (as long as it isn't to cold, or in a place with too much dangerous stuff, like a building site or the like ...and no, everyday environments are not dangerous. At least not once your feet get used to it. There are oh so many stupid misconceptions about going barefoot...) is best, though one would have to carefully ease into it, if one has deeply shoe-used feet. Failing that, or when one must wear shoes anyway, minimalist shoes (sometimes, wrongly, called "barefoot shoes") are the best. They let the feet function properly, and have as thin a sole as possible.

    @@ZarlanTheGreen I was agreeing with you that we aren't supposed to be walking with the heel leading. I was just pointing out that insoles, and heel padding are there with the intent of protecting the feet, and absorb shock. As you've pointed out the claims that heel padding helps absorb shock are dubious at best.

    @@vimtheprotogen2855 Yeah... It should also be noted that the extra heightening of the heel, screws with the posture and encourages heel-striking.
