Michael Alig and DJ Keoki Interview December 1988 Part 1

This is an interview of Michael Alig that I did right before New Year's 1989. I sent a copy of it to Macauley Culkin, in 2003, while he was making Party Monster so that he could see how Michael spoke in a calm setting, without a lot of lights and celebrity kids all around him. As you'll see, Michael's normal tone of voice is quite unaffected, which is why he was able to befriend so many lovely lads and lasses.
Michael Alig was the hottest club promoter in New York by the end of 1988. Rudolf Piper, the master of clubland, wanted Michael to promote the newest, most fabulous club of all, to open in the West Village by the Hudson River, the five-floor Club Mars. This interview took place days before the New Year's Eve opening. Right after my show aired, Michael was summarily fired and replaced by Chip Duckett, who made Mars the mythical wonderland that it immediately became. [The building, by the way, used to house Alex in Wonderland, with its famed Asstrick in the basement dungeon, for dudes who dug diddling darlings in the dark.]
My hunch is that pieces in the New York Times and Village Voice, which had come out days before this interview, detailing Michael's edgy antics, had some behind-the-scenes club investors worried. I do not know whether his interview with me added to their anxiety. My guess is that the dice had already been cast while Keoki and Michael were talking to me.
Michael Musto and Chip Duckett and some other people in-the-know are invited to e-mail me with the back story, and I will update this blurb.
The interview ends eerily. Jokingly, after we discuss some of Michael's tactics as the town's Pied Piper and Peter Pan, I wish Michael the best and promise to visit him in jail. This was a joke, and it was seven years before he chopped up drug dealer Angel Melendez in March of 1996. I am not clairvoyant. Everybody who knew Michael made jail jokes, assuming he'd eventually have a serious run-in with Mayor Koch's anti-fun sqaud, especially because of his wonderful Outlaw parties that he staged all over town. [He and the club kids would suddenly descend upon some unsuspecting spot, like a Burger King in Times Square, and give the tourists some thrills until the police eventually arrived.]
Michael is now working on his autobiography, Alig-ula, and I am posting this interview so that he can view it for his research. Keoki, Michael and I share the copyright to this video. That means that you may use it for community purposes, but not for profit unless all three of us (or our estates, if it comes to that) agree.
As for my personal relationship with Michael, I must admit that I still love him deeply, not only because he was instrumental in validating my show and gaining me connections I never would have had without him, but because I think he is a tortured genius and that he is, even now, responsible for keeping the young people in our community willing to embrace and celebrate their true selves and stare down the forces of darkness who want to rob us of our natural joy, wonderment, and pursuit of love in all its guises.
I believe that three times makes the charm, and that he will be paroled next year. He is now 40+, and still adorable, and he need not fear that he will be lonely when he returns to us. He has friends and admirers who will support and love him, as they have for over a decade, keeping him alive and hopeful against all odds. Like a phoenix, he will rise from the ashes, more brilliant and colorful than before because he has always known that his friends are his true treasure.

A drug dealer? I wonder how many people that drug dealer killed... Impure, too pure, drugs that are cut with filler or fentanyl kill people. Drug dealers kill thousands of people every year in every Western nation. Dealers are scum. China executes them for a reason.

i am so obsessed with Michael, Keoki, the whole Club Kid movement and the murder case and I actually feel bad about it. I am so intrigued by Michael Alig, I think he is so beautiful and it's hard to believe by looking at him and watching this interview that he was capable of doing what he did. I so badly want to write him while he's in prison but I haven't. I don't think I'd know what to say for one, and for 2 I would feel weird corresponding with a murderer. I'm so torn!

1988...with a handheld camcorder on a tripod. Youre not going to have 4k resolution, etc. Although, I have watched peoples home movies on cassette from back then and its better than this both the audio and lighting. So, maybe this is just a crappy version. Who knows.

They were a couple. Read the book Party Monster for which the movie is based on. It's much more telling & better than the movie.

Michael was a tortured soul who got into something that was much bigger than he realized at the time. What he did to angel is horrible and he shouldn’t be forgiven for it but unless you know what it is to be young, in the grips of addiction, and being as famous as he became with so many kids looking up to him, who are you to judge? I was a young addict and did some crazy things to get high but, NEVER on my list was MURDER to do that. Ya'll sit here and tell people not to judge and "glorify" this broke "trailblazer" as you say. He went to prison and STILL was getting high there! Got out, joking about Angel and back at his addiction! NO remorse! Trying to act like it was the 80s again, instead of doing right by himself. If it wasn't for James he wouldn't of had that much exposure nor weird a** "Fans"! Famous!? lol "Kids" was literally looking for a place to party and get high. Clubs Kids was before his time there and doing a Talk Show/local newspapers doesn't make you famous.

Drugs are inanimate and cannot be blamed for all the misguided negative attention they receive everywhere. Especially when it’s the sole responsibility of the individuals that chose to use them. Not all that partake lose control, abuse them, then become homeless and hopeless drug addicts. There are numerous people I know that are able to try, experiment, and even moderately indulge in certain chemicals without letting it completely take over their lives and become a full blown junkie.

I watched like 5 interviews in the past 3 days and he always looks like a asshole. I'm only watching to find out who he really is and why he would possibly want to be around that kid desmond is amazing. There's something seriously wrong with his mother choices. You dont leave 10 year old kids around manipulators like alig. Side note the musto guy is and has been jealous of alig. He acts like he's trying to take alig down for the greater good but its really bc he doesn't like him. Whatever alig is it doesn't change that musto is a hater

As far as "Superstar" (laugh) DJ Keoki is concerned...He DJ'd @ Piranha Nightclub where I work as head of security here in Las Vegas and he decided to get drunk and piss in a garbage can and act a fool with a few of his friends so we had to throw him out of the club and he is no longer allowed in...permanently! = )

It was the late 80s. Gay dudes and androgyny ruled the day. Quit acting like the current era invented the LGBT. The 80s were way more gay than today. If anything we’ve gone backwards in our contemporary times by forcing people into gender roles and forcing them to take hormones to enforce gender stereotypes It was the late 1980s, not the 1950s, stop acting like people didn’t talk about gay people or that people weren’t openly gay. It was Manhattan, not some small town in the South

Michael Musto worked at the voice why Michael got the spread he did and Michael Musto was crazy about him kissing his azz because he thought Michael was going to be somebody. Yea a murderer. My wife and I were both NYC club kids in late 80's-early 90's. We met and got together later in life.Lots of AWESOME memories of those days!!!!!!Fashion Patrol will ride again!!

Turntablism and scratching is a specific talent learned and utilized by some DJs for added effect and to highlight their scratch abilities. But the truth is some of the most famous, popular, and best DJs in the world do NOT scratch during their sets (like ever) Now, there can be a myriad of reasons for this.. One being that the style or genre they play and love doesn’t need anything extra on top of their tracks like: scratching, beat juggling, and heavy FX use. There’s certainly little to No room for these turntable extras and tricks when playing/mixing many genres and sub-genres, such as: House, Techno, Trance, etc. Personally, I’ve been DJing over 20 years now and just recently learned to use some of these entertaining and fun extras and FX. Alas, it’s also extremely relative; based on the crowd, the venue, and the event itself as to what a DJ wants to and/or should play. Discussing Keoki specifically as a DJ and performer is a very complex and complicated subject to tackle. He’s very well known and quite infamous for his past DJ shenanigans and the many incidents around the world that have helped shape the perception of him, for better or worse. But regardless of how you feel about him as a person, which hardly anyone that will ever read this can honestly claim to know. He’s an undeniably talented DJ and producer who has had to deal with, work on, and persevere through so much more than any average performer. He’s experienced so many heartbreaking tragedies, personal demons and addictions, and many ups and downs in his career that, quite frankly, would’ve simply destroyed many other artists/performers. But, I for one am proud and even in awe of Keoki for the countless obstacles and personal issues he’s faced and worked through while navigating this wild, crazy, and ever-evolving dance music industry. I really respect the fact that he’s never given up on DJing and production. Its abundantly clear to me that he loves music more than words can express and continues in living the dream of so many aspiring DJs. To this very day he continues to DJ and perform, via Twitch currently! Keoki knew at such a young age that this was his calling and chose never to give up on that dream. Of course he’s not perfect, and suffers from many of the same afflictions and problems that so many of us do., especially artists and performers. But I know he will never give up doing what he loves the most, or give in to what others want and/or expect from him. For me, that’s one of several qualities that only a “Superstar” possesses. Long live Superstar Keoki and the countless like-minded DJs and artists that look up to him and would rather die than sell out or give up on what they know their purpose is, and what they’re on this planet to do. ❤️🙏🏽 PS. Good on you for learning how to scratch Rockmaster DJ Riz! But now might be an ideal opportunity to work on modesty and respect. Just a thought… best of luck cowboy! 😉
