A friend of mine favoured me with his T-Bone RB100-ribbon microphone, copy of the studio standard Royer R121. In this clip I decided to compare it to the original which I own.
To compensate for the volume gap between the two mics I had to add an extra 9 decibels of gain on the T-bone.
Guitar DI recorded and reamped with Radial Xamp Reamper w/ RME FF800 mic preamp. Marshall 2536 212 Silver Jubilee cab loaded w/ Marshall G12 Vintage by Celestion (uk) & Marshall 2061CX loaded w/ Celestion Heritage series G12H 75hz Greenback (uk)
Friedman Small Box50 amp head/PRS Custom 24 & Suhr Classic S, both guitars w/ stock pups.
No post processing. Delay on the solo added later in Cubase pro.

This is a great mic for its price. Have in mind it shines with a good mic preamp.

Glorious tone! Nice chops too. Thanks for the comparison. The R-121 sounds like it has better time domain response across all frequencies. Perhaps a thinner (quicker) ribbon element. But the frequency curves between both mics sound near identical.

Without any questions that's true, but the difference in quality does not make up for the price difference. I own a R-121 and I love it, but I start thinking about buying 2 RB 100 additionally. For Overhead purposes for example...
Adding gain and some eq the RB 100 works perfectly for the price. I’ll buy one as soon as I can. Tx

feel like with a little bit more high eq it can match the royer very well
well, aside from the obvious output level difference... seems worth getting one for more options on amps... i have tried C414 +57, but a ribbon would probably be a better option than a condenser

It worth the money for sure. It is good to have more and different type of mics for various applications in the studio. Live a 57 is pretty enough :-)
Does the royer have more low mids? Higain strat clip sounded congested and fuzzy. Other than that, the royer sounds expensive. Has that sweet top and mellow tone. But the cheapo sounds serviceable, if not good, but in comparison to my ears low mids are more prominent on the royer but is overall perhaps better sounding. Good comparison, thank you!

The 121 definitely captures a wider range of sound though and the T-Bone is super for its price. Thanks for the comment 🍻
The RB 100 is surprisingly good, but as I understand it has at least a lower output than the R-121 that something like a CloudLifter might be appropriate or am I wrong?

Correct. Exactly 9 db volume difference in favor of the R121
Tb 100 sounds really good for that price
