How to install new speakers in your 90-97 Mazda Miata / MX-5 / Eunos Roadster without drilling any extra holes.
The doors on the 90-97 Miata have 6.5” speakers.
NOTE: If you have a 94-97 (NA8) Miata you have to remove the whole door panel to access the speaker.
I upgraded the 30 year old originals with 6.5” MB Quart coaxial speakers that I had on hand.
Most 6.5” speakers will fit fine.
However, you may need to trim the plastic behind the speaker grille for coaxial speakers with tweeters that stick out too far.

    This is a great video, both for installing speakers on this car, and for how to wire in speakers with aftermarket connectors.

    Very good video. Suggest adding the XTC foam speaker baffles to act as the same type of rainshield with bottom half cut out as seen on the back of the original speakers you took out (at the 3:05 mark).

    Hey Miata Man, do you know if the Speaker Panel Grille is replaceable? By the looks of the video it doesn't seem accessible.

    Is the speakers that you installed have a good sound when driving on highway with the top down/wind blowing? I’m trying to replace my speakers, and not sure which speakers are a good choice

    These ones sounded great. There are so many speaker options out there, so it’s hard to pick. A lot of it depends on how much power you are running though them. Alpine speakers are always a good choice though.

    i was going to do this in a month or so, great tutorial. I've herd most speakers don't fit as they're too wide because the door is thin, is this a problem?

  • @MiataMan

    @MiataMan

    Hi Harry, thanks for the positive feedback 🤝👍. 90-97 Miatas will accept most 6.5” speakers. There is lots of room inside the door to accommodate deeper, more powerful speakers. The window track is far enough away from the speaker hole, that there is no contact when the window is rolled down. If your speakers have a protruding tweeter, you may need to trim the plastic framework that supports the black metal grill on the factory speaker cover.

    It could be a bad channel in the head unit. The original OEM radios sometimes have this issue.

    Mine is the same. Low voltage at the wires and the speaker tested good. I'm assuming the right channel is bad and replacing the radio.

    I'm getting horrible buzzing from the edges of the speaker and/or tweeter. Any way to modify this situation so the speaker isn't hitting the cover?

  • @MiataMan

    @MiataMan

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes. Quite often, the tweeter on coaxial speakers hits the plastic support that goes across the speaker cover. You can cut it out where it attaches at the edges. I sometimes use my pruning shears or a pair of sharp wire cutters to snip the four points of attachment.

    @@MiataMan Thanks. I think it's actually the foam around the speaker hitting the too-small ridge that hits it. Also, the outer edges of the bracket buzz against the metal. Are you aware of any aftermarket brackets which give proper space for the woofer and tweeter?

    @@seriouscatisserious buy a speaker with a grill and modify the plastic cover that the old grill is on by mounting the speaker on top. (that's how my Miata was done). You may want to look into some sound dampening for the inside of the doors though, there is a bit of vibration on mine at loud volume.

    Would it have been good to run a bead of silicone around the speaker to seal it (better sound)?

  • @MiataMan

    Couldn’t hurt. Not sure if you would notice a difference though. It would depend how much power you are running, speaker type and if the doors have Dynamat installed.
