Speaker rings - What material you SHOULD BE using - CarAudioFabrication
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Wooden speaker rings can easily degrade and decompose over time as they are exposed to moisture and condensation within the door of a vehicle. This can lead to poor speaker performance or your speaker even falling out of position! In this video I show you a plastic alternative that is easy to find and use!

The shirt,making Doug proud 😂
Sweet tip! BTW. You just helped me solve a problem I've been working on for a couple of weeks. Trying to figure out what material to use in my YJ so I can mount my gauges in the dash without completely rebuilding a new center panel. I can simply cut this to size, screw it in on the sides, poxy the board to the gauge holes, then cut the new gauge holes in. Once that is done I can mount and rewire. Holly cow. Thank you sooooooo much.
I liked this video because it shows us beginners where we can get materials locally to do the job right. Kinda tells us where we can find miss right, and miss right now in the same store.
I made and installed a couple of mdf rings in my Altima coupe a few years ago. I had them in the doors for around 2.5 years. I removed the system when I sold the car and found that they were completely water logged and softening. Probably would have ended up rusting out the doors eventually.
That is quite a cost effective alternative. I am going to be making custom speaker mounts for my doors soon, and I will be sure to use this or ABS.
1:35 Yep, you just gained cool points with me based on the track played! Much respect!
Awesome. Thanks for this. Local lowes and home depot products are always great suggestions. Shipping isn't always viable in my location.
You are the man . Been looking for new way to build rings
Good stuff! I would love to see more stuff along the "commonly available" lines.
Thanks for the tip! I think I’ll use this stuff for my next install 👍🏼
Just the shop alone has come so far for this channel
Really good tip! I need to check this out.
That first circle jig tho! Thanks for the idea!
Could you use marine grade plywood?? Since it’s made to not deteriorate due to moisture exposure?? Another great tutorial Mark
thank you for the video i just made 2 6.5 cellular pvc rings.will they work with fiberglass tweeter pods?
Availability is a big issue for a lot of people; myself included! I like being able to handle materials before committing to something. Sometimes I'll even get new ideas while I'm searching for materials! Great video!
Excellent. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome 👍 great idea.. and it's cheaper.... Thanks Mark... You the man....
I am building a 15x23x6 to put under the back seat of my cj5. I think I have found my material. I plan to paint it with an undercoating for durability.
Does any body knows what type of jigsaw blade i apologize if my writing is wrong please if you know what type of blade he used it will be great
this man used a pin, paper or some cardbaord, and a pencil for a P E R F E C T circle....mind = BLOWN lol once again... thanks brother
Oh, Great. this material can be used to make sideskirts and spoilers.. :D Awesome.
How would you do a full door panel using this PVC and is it ideal for let's say a 10" mid bass speaker?
These speaker rings kick butt!
oh my god Mark thanks for this video, been try to go the damn home depot for plastic sheet like this for month and i can't seem to find it...... now i know where it is ....
Can you make an door pannel useing this meterial. Or an fiberglass subwoffer box useing this meterial
Aloha Mark I was wondering if you could also use Plexiglass for speaker Rings? I know that using screws on plexiglass you would use a counter sinking method.
Hi Mark, how was the work between pvc and body filer or duraglas? Pvc looks perfect for thin trims and to paint too.
that cellular pic sounds like a great idea. question how well would in hold a Fredric adhered to it
Quick question - is there an easy way to make spacer wedges - to change the angle of a driver?
is this material transparant??? wondering if i can install led lighting behind the ring for kind of an el wire glow to it!
When using these PVC rings what would be the better resin for an enclosure, epoxy or polyester? That is, which resin bonds to PVC better, epoxy or polyester?
would this be a better alternative to MDF or Birch for fiberglassing door panels? would the fiber glass adhear better to the pvc?
Un-related to the video, but how can I find out/calculate the volume of a subwoofer to account for total airspace? I thought subwoofer displacement was the displacement of air on each stroke?
there's always good things at the Depot just gotta use your imagination thanks Mark
Thank you for the info.
Nice video. What are they used for?
and is this material suitable for amp rack making? thanks.
I'm fairly new to car audio so forgive me if this is a stupid question...but what is the point in a speaker ring? Are you trying to space out the speaker to give more airspace behind it....or giving the speaker a more solid piece of material to bolt to....cutting down on vibration transfer in a door panel....or something else???
Just checked HD yesterday, No Go on that specific item. but they did have thinner ones. Location Specific?
Great idea 💡 👍
Good stuff Brother
I've been looking for cellular PVC in the UK with little luck. How do Foamex(TM) or a closed cell PVC compare? There's lots of plastic manufacturers selling both at reasonable prices...
are you able to redo all your speaker pod videos where you've made them in wood and now do them in ABS or HDPE etc. Currently doing speaker pods and some of the tricks and techniques don't translate very well, such as the cold form plastic staple into plastic. I've now had a lot of practice at plastic welding. Also spacing rings above backboards (old cardboard ring trick) as wooden dowels will be a no-no. Cheers.
Pimpin! Great info!
How would I add rings on my carpeted subwoofer box? My new 12” sub is a little larger than my last sub. Would you add a carpet ring or use a dremel or what?
i need a measurment for a 6" inch speaker spacer flush mount
What it the better method to attach the woofer to the PVC ring. Using Screws, t-Nuts or Threaded Inserts??
Am looking to stock 3 of these together and get it up about 83mm to fit the speaker. My problem is will it be to heavy to mount on a SUV Liftgate??
Great video as always. I use plastic kitchen cutting boards that I buy at Target or Wallmart or any other grocery store. Cool thing about cutting boards is that they come in different thicknesses and sizes for cheap.

+edoubleist Nice, this works good too, the only downside with HDPE is traditional CA glue doesn't really stick to it, I didn't mention it in the video but if you rough up the surface of this PVC the glue sticks. :)

+edoubleist at Sam's they sell the professional hpde cutting borads thats what I buy its 20x15 inches for like 8 dollars I just a few of them up on the weekends and work great..
Can you make one for my L5 kicker 15
What about making a sub box out of this?
Am I missing there the links to the plastic cutting blades/bits are located?
Mark I love your T-shirt 👍👌
Looks like this beats cutting boards for plastic rings
Hey dude, I was just wondering if that cellular pvc is easily paintable??
I realise this is an old video but has anyone been able to find this stuff in Australia at all I can’t seem to find it
What about 8" Grey Schedule 80 PVC Pipe?
Hmmm looks like some other construction going on in the shop with them walls. Don't know if you've ever done a shop tour.
Might be helpful to cover what kind of adhesives work with this and other non-wood materials. Also things like how well does poly resin (or epoxy for that matter), adhere, body filler for further shaping, etc.

To glue it to itself use pvc primer and glue. Very thin coat if you are clamping or it will slide. To glue to other material use construction adhesive that is rated for both materials. Liquid nails, Loctite, etc.
In Puerto Rico we use PVC for everything... kitchen cabinets, entertaiment cabinets, bedroom sets.. is limitless..
Hey man nice video , Can you custom make a box for me ?
Does that mean the speaker also gets wet? That doesn't sound right... I thought the cones are made from paper
ever thought of making a sub box out of this material?? and if so what glues can be used

can't seem to find cellular PVC in SoCal. where are you buying this, what country?
I know this an old video but HD will not cut PVC board for you. I've been using it for years and every HD I've gone to has told me no when I ask to get it cut.

They also won't cut that white painted/Laminated wood they well for shelves either lol! I ended up leaving the store with no materials because they just wouldn't cut it.
Im using Aluminium material for Back ring
how about sanding and gluing it? what kind of glue will bond with it? can this material get sanded like mdf? thanks.

Wearing Doug's shirt while calling out mdf speaker rings! 😂
Is it bio degradable?
When I asked the local Home Depot to cut the PVC sheet, they told me no because the "dust" messes up their dust collection and stuff. So it may be hit or miss.
why don't you save rings as a template instead of drawing it out jigging ect.. everytime?
I seal and fiberglass over my rings
Nice T-Shirt
If using MDF why not primer and paint the ring. wouldn't that seal and protect the ring from water damage?
@CarAudioFabrication

No, the second you put a screw into the material it will break that layer. Plus painting would require more effort than just using the superior material
Can u help me out on a design or dimensions for a box, I'm putting 2 10's as I said in a suburban w/competition series subs, but need 1.5 cu ft Ea. Sub total to 3.0 cu ft. Ported tuned to 20-30hz can u help me out please reply thanku in advance, space of trunk is H16 x40 W x14. 5 D along those number & I want to build this out of 0.75"birch ply
You need to do a coffee and card event
if the water is getting in and degrading the mdf, what is it doing to the speakers? not like they are waterproof. anyway, my car with high end audio never sees rain, and I tape off the windows when I wash it. however, I must admit I learned to tape, when I removed the door card, and saw there was actually rust on the (previous) speaker frame, however the mdf mounts looked fine, the shop had thoughtfully coated the mdf in something black, that must have protected them.

most car audio speakers are in fact waterproof and made with this in mind. even the paper ones like from hybrid audio are waterproof treated. basically all car doors get water intrusion, it's just life. from a bugatti to a civic.
lol Mark are you filming in your attic now? And btw my new dream car audio system is a 1947 dodge truck with Extreme cabin interior and a minimum of 180db. Can you make a couple vids on that? thanks

Home depot has resin and bondo. I always coat my wood in resin.
are you wearing Doug's shirt ?
Couldn't you paint MDF rings and make them virtually water proof?
@CarAudioFabrication
6 жыл бұрын
+TonyTube407 no, the second you put a fastener in the seal is broken, trust me the water finds its way in
is it heavy then wood?
@inconsteveable91
3 жыл бұрын
depends on the wood. PVC is very light.
Hey Mark, this is a great idea and looks super clean compared to wood. On a similar note, could you show us what you would do to protect the speakers from water? Maybe some kind of curved shroud that slots into the speaker mounting hole which you then mount the speaker on top of?
Thanks for the vid, I love macgyvering projects. I save so much money, I rarely buy something for it's intended purpose anymore. The folks at menards, home depot and lowes just let me wander and don't even bother asking what I need help with since they know Im not using anything in there store for whatever's slapped on the label....... hahahahaha
Plastic speaker ring are better because the epoxy resins and glues will bond better to the plastic over wood
Great tip, but doesn't MDF have better acoustic properties? And can't you just paint them to get the waterproofing?
@CarAudioFabrication

+cheepGeek If you were building an enclosure the density of the material would come more into play. With making a mounting flange out of MDF there might be a small difference, but it’s going to be small… like borderline non-existent. There is a ton of more crazy stuff going on in the door panel that needs to be addressed over that miniscule change. Even if it is slightly “better” once your MDF ring turns to a sponge and the speaker falls out of the hole or the wood turns to the density of styrofoam that tiny improvement isn’t going to matter. I feel this “its acoustically better” argument is just a crutch for people that are set in their ways and don’t want to accept their might be a better option or ever try anything new. I’ve seen plenty of examples of painted mdf where water still destroyed the rings. The second you screw a fastener into the wood the “waterproof” barrier is broken. It’s so much more work to try and waterproof wood, why not just use the right material from the get go?
the humidity will kill wood

If you're getting that much water in your vehicle, maybe you should deal with that. Might have more serious issues with your system getting wet.
@CarAudioFabrication
5 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Doors are designed to have water in them and drain out, condensation naturally builds up and all components in a door are designed to be exposed to water. So you don't add MDF rings to an area that has the water condensation. It takes very little condensation to swell a ring. It's funny to me how many people fight me in this. The plastic is cheap. Do it the right way instead of half assing it.
I saw that screw blowout ;-)

There are some good vids on KZread about making your own HPDE sheets from milk jugs and things like that too, very easy to do with a simple little craigslist toaster oven or something. =)
plastic is the way to go.im sure boxes can be made the same way
If you needed to bond multiple pieces of this, would you use PVC Cement?
Thumbs up for some Pink Floyd
Great idea, but where do you find PVC sheets? None of my local hardware stores have it. Home depot, Lowes, Ace, etc. It is very expensive too! The 4x8 sheets I saw online were like $700 a sheet! Makes no sense at all. Even at $22 for the 8'×8"×1/2" is pricey. Cheaper to make rings out of plywood or mdf and just paint them with something water proof, like polyurethane, flex seal, bedliner, or just few coats of good 'ol spray paint.
Not to be a dick . But if the wood is getting wet enough to cause issue wouldn't the same water destroy the speakers

+ALEX car audio speakers are manufactured with a degree of moisture resistant materials.
Just coat the rings with your resin.. wouldn't that work

No. The second you add screws you break the water proof barrier. Resin would be more expensive too. Why not just use the plastic?

I prefer mdf. Just spray paint it with a sealer and it won't be affected by water at all. Mdf far superior to pvc
