I honestly cannot get into this game because I can't get behind a designer/publisher who isn't willing to stand tall and own the title they chose for their game. Oh well, good thing there are other games.

Zee had an important mention that this was a game that "brings people to the table" because there are tons of great games that don't get table time for some reason or another. Can we get a 3 way [TOP 10 Games that bring people to the table] video?

@@VAULT-TEC_INC. it literally doesnt... Supercup had 3 main modules and a 4th module for high player counts. The reprint (second edition) ONLY incorporates that 4th module for high player counts, but none of the major 3 modules of super cup. Though it does add 1 new thing that neither the first edition nor the expansion had, which is those white and black camels

I feel like I must have a different version of the original than you guys are talking about, because I thought the components were great. Sure, I'd imagine that the plastic pyramid works better than the cardboard one, but the cardboard version still looks cool and serves the same purpose. Calling the old version "garbage" seems like a huge exaggeration.

Camel Up is a great family game. I was excited for this reprint but I see no reason to get this one over my original copy.

Does the original have the black and white camel? I don’t remember them? Plus the older versions pyramid tab would wear out as it’s only cardboard.

Camel up is great! It really grew on me over time. You can’t take this game too serious and you just have fun! It creates great moments of excitement and laughter.

Reason why I've always enjoyed Toms reviews, it's always a fun factor for him. I always want to make sure if playing any tabletop game is gonna be fun despite on tother things of course like strategy and such. Camel Up is random but a lot of fun!

I actually think the artwork on the new edition is so good, it's pushed it from a "pass" to a "wishlister"

I'm agreeing with Tom and Zee on this one. Every time I've introduced a new gamer to Camel Up they've loved it, with stand up moments and lots of laughs. It's a great / silly introductory game. Fun fun fun. Looking forward to getting this new version.

Excited to play the Zee variant rule. 2 crazy candles racing correctly and all others backwards.

James Brazeal Counter racing candles! Camels on fire! This does sound thrilling.

The dice look different from the image I saw, which have cool decorative patterns.

I love the larger playmat and the expansion for the original, but I sure prefer the plastic pyramid....wonder if I can get my hands on one?

Finally added this to my collection. We had a copy in my old office and I knew I had to buy it once I lost access to it. It's amazing how perfectly the game captures that better's high without any real cash being on the line. No other betting game I've played comes close to that sensation. The guy at my LGS even recommended playing for nickels to make it even more exciting!

Missed out on the original, may pick this up as a simple family/casual game. Don't have many games that play 6+ players

On the back of the new older box, they actually quoted a review that called in Camel Up. I thought that would've ended the debate.

So, of the Betting/Racing games... Camel Up or Downforce?

I always found Camel Up to be the more evocative name, since it is all about betting on the race rather than the race itself. Its a silly play on words with "pony up" and for me at least was more clear than Camel Cup as a circuit of camel races.

But what about the extra dice available in one of the original expansions? I recently played the original edition with the extra put-back dice mechanic and add-on board and I thought that was pretty essential and could speed up the game even more.

did they say when it will be available?

Wish I found out about this game earlier. I can't find the 2nd edition anywhere unless I import it...

Ah dang it, bought the first edition 2 months ago. This dice pyramid looks so much better.

So.... how do the crazy camels work? (I could go look on BGG but this video does not state what they do.)

Not sure why there was ever any debate as to the name. It clearly calls itself CAMEL UP on the back of the original box in the game description text (well on my Pegasus version anyway).

Alright, I'm convinced. This is going on the wishlist. Although, I'm tempted to remove Downforce at the same time as they seem pretty similar. Anyone have thoughts on their similarities or if it's worth owning both? Thanks.

RecordsHisPlays FYI... There is a camel up app if you want to try the game out. I've had really great experiences with downforce with my group. But everyone has their preferences.

I haven't played Camel Up yet, but I can already tell Downforce is not nearly so random and zany. I personally am going to own both because they have different focuses with similar core mechanics. You can be more manipulative and strategic in Downforce on how you block cars and the like. This game really is more about zany betting over strategic bets. Ultimately I think they scratch different itches.

Wanted to follow up... I've played downforce and the physical version of camel up several times now. I love both games. Downforce is more strategic, camel up is more tactical. They are similar in that they are races, and do some betting, but feel very different. Hence a collection can have both. The camel up app doesn't really do the physical game justice.

I’ll say it: I like my original Camel Up better! The original art captures the zany spirit of the game much better (the new is sterile and rather busy). And I never had problems with my pyramid, which is still using its original rubber band. I was enamored with Camel Up from the beginning. I imported the Pegasus Spiele version from Germany. I knew I had a box-o-fun when Nana was on her feet, chanting for an orange 3. You guys are late to the Camel races!

I agree. Tom has such poor taste some times. Plastic doesn´t always equals improvement. Same with Council of Four from CMON that Tom thought looked much better. I respect his opinion, but he is the one that is "objectively wrong" on this one.

I particularly appreciated Sam going through a sample leg of the game to explore some of the actions a player might take and why they would take them.

Loved the original Camel Up. It's a good, fun family game where everyone can participate, but don't expect lots of strategic depth.

Great review sharing your experiences. I really like Sam explaining the game. Felt so clear and got a good feel from it and similar to the way Rahdo explains games.

Ha.. there is nothing more frustrating than watching Rahdo making mistake after mistake.. and as Jen (Gen?) he makes all those weird decisions normally no one else would make.. funny when by accident he will do better as her than as himself..

As long as they don´t reprint the expansion as well, the original remains my version of choice.

Glad to hear you guys came around on Camel Up! Even if I didn't have the expansion I'd still keep my copy. New one looks better but not enough.

Curious to hear your thoughts on this game vs Divinity Derby (more deterministic, less random, underrated).

Do you just have to remember who placed a bet first in order to get the most $?

The cards are stacked so you have to check which one is closer to the bottom.

This video tries to sell me dice settler in a subliminal way.

The wacky artwork of Dennis Lohausen is better in every single way, Super Cup expansion was AMAZING and it is really a mistake not to include more modules like the bet modifiers or the photographer! Actually this, way too plastic in feels and looks, version just doubled the value of my original complete copy. IMHO, chase down the older versions of Camel Up and Super Cup (and the big Sahara Circuit playmat if you are really into it) and ignore this reprint. Heck, you might even pay less if you buy a used copy of both the original boxes!

I really don't get this. This new version is AMAZING. It catches peoples attention from across a room and keeps all the fun in tact. No need to draw the game out. Keep it short and play another round! We gifted our old version after playing this one. It did have a certain charm but the new one is just gorgeous.

I can confirm it looks better.

it looks waaaaaay better than the original, but maybe that made the price also change.

I can’t speak to the component quality because I don’t own this reprint. However, 100% happy I have the original version. I prefer the artwork of the first production by a long shot.

They got rid of the $10 and $20 paper money cards though!

I have the original and always thought the components were good quality and the board and artwork looked attractive. Glancing at this new one, everything looks more cluttered and harder to discern. I like the artwork, but it isn't as easy to 'read' the board and the cards. Was there anything really wrong with the artwork in the old edition? It was funny and functional.

Ironic that the new edition's box cover, which is definitive about the "Camel Up" title, does not depict any camels actually up another camel's back (as the original cover does).

Never understood the need for pyramid tokens, just take the coin. I have the old version and i don't mind its artwork, it looks ok. Bought this game because i needed something for 7 players and it was a blast. Crazy camels should be fun with a crazy crowd and one may leave them out for a more gamery gamers play.

yeah, well they make a lot of sense in the expansion (Supercup for first edition, not this reprint), but other then that i agree, they weren't too useful

Feel like during the sample turns section of the video, Sam was channeling his inner Rahdo.

Zee loves Pandemic, in which you draw randomly cards all the time, but this game is too random :D

why everyone is thinking spiel des Jahres winner are the best games of the year. It is the best game for families who only buy one or two games in one year. It's a price for people who aren't game board geeks! More of an opener to the hobby.

Possibly because "Spiel des Jahres" literally translates to "Game of the Year".

I never played the original and found this rules overview pretty confusing. I like how it started but then the explanation devolved into an example play-through. What are the cards on the right used for? did I miss something? I don't think Sam ever mentions those...

The cards on the right are a set of cards in the colors of the camel's, one set of five for each player. You use them to place bets for first and last camel at the end of the race (not leg, but entire race). Under those is a tile you can place on the board each leg of the race. When a camel lands on it, the player that places his tile there gets coins and the camel that landed on it will be placed one space back or forward, depending on which side of the tile was up.

I wonder between this and Treasure Island what is a better filler game :)

Looks good, but ugly one have it’s charm. Too sweet, maybe! But i will buy the new version too. The game was already one of the best family games.

I cannot disagree with your take on the artwork more!!! That Dennis Lohausen cartooniness from the original version is outstanding, is so much prettier than this new version, and captures the zany spirit of the game. And to hear you say the original game was just so-so, yet call this the best betting system out there when it hasn't changed? You've lost your minds! To top it off and call the original a piece of garbage in comparison is just misguided. Can't say I've ever disagreed with your take more. Folks, if Tom has convinced people to toss out their first printings, go dig in the garbage, because it's PHENOMENAL!!!

i found the original version better too, idk what this guys are talking about.

Not sold on the new art. Plus, the colors on the camel's in the original version are more district. Also, why include part of the expansion (alliance mechanism) but not all of it? What I DO like, though is the plastic pyramid. Other than that, we love Camel up! Great game, entertains a lot of people and the randomness can really spice things up!

Nobody wanted to give it "two thumbs cup"?

And what is the RRP compared to the original? Sorry, but I think this one has been over produced for what it is.

Love the original, don't see a need to spend the money on this version though. Doesn't hit the table often enough to be honest.

Kyle Martin, It was on 10th position, not so bad actually. Tom said Splendor should have won. Ok, i can understand that, but I disagree anyway ;)

It's not completely random. It is a great game to teach simple probability. Original looks better.

If you play this as a racing game, where you race the camels, it sucks and it's totally random. If you play this as a betting game, as intended, it's really a lot of fun!

It sounded like Sam would have given it a thumb down but then he gave it 1.5 thumbs up? Did he feel pressured to give it 1.5 thumbs up because Tom enjoyed it so much?

Didn’t downforce do this better? It looks pretty similar.

First edition. This one looks lousy. No camera in this version. 🤬

The artwork on this new one looks too busy, I'm not sold on it. Also the rules sound exactly the same from the old version besides adding those crazy camels so I don't get what is so much better about this version that changed their minds.

I love the original game. But this game needs to be unpredictable to be fun. Predictable games are mediocre at best (I had such recent game). I think Zee, Tom and Sam had boring first games as well and that is why they had low rating for original. Yes, crazy camels raise up unpredictability and thats why this version looks like more fun. This game is luck dependant and dice decide how fun game will be :) I don't mind original pyramid, it worked ok. And how hard it is to shake pyramid one more time if dice are stuck? You just need to use board or other hard surface when roling dice (cloth doesn't work that good). Production looks better, but will price stay the same? And it is easy to put more money in graphic design when You know that game will sell in large quantities. Board is better and pyramid is more durable and easier to understand how it works, but I think I like original cardboard coins, card and other cardboard piecies design better. I think that this review proves that Dice tower crew was wrong about original Camel Up. p.s. I want that crazy camel promo for my original game.

And the most fun we had was, when at the end of the game everybody knew which camel will win, but nobody could put a card of that camel on winning bet, because we all spend those cards on loosers bet half game earlier!

Camel Cup is unquestionably the better name. No idea why they officially named it this way.

In my world it always will be called Camel Cup, cause it's simply logical...

i like the original version more, the art of this one sees too much cartooned, more like for little kids, and the wooden components are better than the plastic, at least in my opinion, the only thing i found better in this ones is the board, only that, im going to buy the older version, nice video by the way.

maybe we are too serious, but we like Divinity Derby much better, it's not as fast and silly, but its fast and silly enough and there is actually a game there even if it's very light too

This has to be one of the most disappointing reviews I’ve seen the dice tower put out. No real discussion on this version vs the OG with super cup (since the reprints layout looks as if it won’t get that expansion at any point)

We didn't do that as much because a.) that's a separate video and b.) many, many, many people haven't played the first one, especially with the expansion. We need to look at this as a completely new game for their sakes.

The cover on this one looks boring and generic, the old cover captured the spirit of the game way better.

That's how I feel. The original version portrays the game- which is a silly game about stacks of camels literally riding on top of each other- as silly and playful, albeit kinda childish. This new version seems to be trying too hard to make it look like an Indiana Jones film.

I'm sorry you have to be wrong twice Tom, but the older one looked much nicer.

So i suck at a game so i dont like it... Weeeeeelllll thats just subjective...

You are wrong! The original looks soooo much better!

I alway preferred Camel Up. Camel Cup sounded generic to me, and everyone gets what 'camel up' means the second they play the game. And the fact that Sam can no longer berate people for calling it Camel Up is just a bonus!

Not a helpful review ... hopefully others do some more soon ... sigh .. dice tower :( This game is GREAT for a mixed gaming group of casual gamers, kids, etc. is this a good fit for hardcore board gamers, well .. if you are using it as a filler game ... an end game late at night when everyone's mind is spent, etc. etc. This is a fun game with more randomness to it which is friendly for new players, casual players and kids. If you have a family, if you have a spouse/significant other who isn't hardcore, etc. this is a good option. Instead of very subjective opinion based on jaded hardcore boardgamer preference (guys who get PAID to do reviews, to advertise for companies etc. ... very biased often times) ... a longer explanation of how 2nd differs from first would have been useful. More time on the new mechanics, etc. a side by side comparison with 1st ... instead of screen time for these guys ... pontificating opinion. :(

To clarify a few things, this game is GREAT. I love it. A comparison to the first is only helpful to those who have the first edition. For most people, this is the only edition they'll see. Also, we don't get paid to do reviews.

This is really disappointing ...
