MHL Adapters & HDMI Screen Mirroring Explained: Passive, Active, Samsung's 11-pin, DVI
Ғылым және технология
In this updated video, I go through both types of MHL (active, passive) and show how to use MHL to mirror your smartphone (or tablet) content onto both an HDTV and a computer monitor.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_H...
MHL adapters are available online through MonoPrice, eBay and others for ~$10: www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=...
Devices that support MHL: www.mhltech.org/devices.aspx
MHL is typically connected via a device's 5-pin micro-USB port. However, Samsung uses a proprietary 11-pin interface so if you're purchasing an MHL adapter/cable, you'll need to purchase the 11-pin to 5-pin adapter: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_H... / www.amazon.com/Monoprice-11-Pi...
My original post on Sympatico: www.sync-blog.com/sync/2011/09...
MHL allows for MIRRORING of the screen, not an extension or 2nd display. As such, there is NO performance difference from the phone to the connected display.
(Some people have asked if video playback is different on MHL than on the phone. It is IDENTICAL. The images are MIRRORED. If it plays smoothly on the phone, it will be smooth on the LCD/HDTV.)
MHL outputs up to 1080p (through as of yet, no device have 1080p screens for mirroring) as well as full 7.1 channel surround sound.
Currently, MHL-capable phones and tablets include devices from HTC, Samsung, LG, and others.

Hey, nice video, but i need some help. I am trying to mirror my Galaxy S5 on to my Dell laptop. How would this method work?
What sucks quite a bit is that only few smartphones support MHL... It's quite strange that we still struggle to connect phones with TVs through cable in 2019...😵
Thank you for your video!!!! which one cable you would recommend for samsung galaxy pro 12.2? Thank you for your answer in andvance!!!
Thanks for the helpful video. could you pls explain how to you use your TV remote control to control the connected phone? I have Panasonic LED.
I was missing the 5 pin to 11 pin adapter. This video explained very clearly. Thank you for an amazing video. I subscribed to your channel
Hi Jeremy, thanks for one of the few comprehensive videos on the subject. I have a LeTV X800, which is USB 3.0 Type C, MHL 3.0 and I intend to use with an HDTV without native MHL. What would be the combination of adapter / cable recommended? Adapters from Samsung and Sony, for example, work with any device compatible with mhl?
This was so well explained. I will try this before sending my mhl black box with hdmi back.
Thanks for the video, I was missing the 5 pin to 11 pin adapter.
The BEST VIDEO about this topic. Thank you.
Hi Jeremy, I own a Samsung galaxy J5 2016, and have trouble on finding what cable works for me. Have you any idea on what cable my phone is comparable with, or will I just get a Chromecast? Thanks.
Your video was very informative and helpful, thank you. I used a generic mhl adapter to connect my samsung galaxy s4 to a 3m sr1000 projector and needed info on mhl/hdmi adapters, worked out great.
thank you, this really helped me.I was under the impression that ONLY the galaxy s3 needed the adapter, this clarified things for me
I have a question will this work on a LG K20 plus also will this setup, can i hook it up to my HD PVR 60 to record games on my phone.
can I use my audio headphone jack to connect to speakers while screen being mirrored ? #audioOUTPUT

thanks for the help
Jeremy I was very impressed with video I was looking for this info 2 years ago and never say this video. I came across it randomly last night. The video was so precise I liked a subscribed thank you
I think this might be the best MHL video on KZread. In the case of the MHL equipped TV, it appears you're using a 5 pin to 11 pin conversion adapter. I beleve an 11 pin passive MHL cable was also made available?
Great video. Thanks. This is to display on TV or pc-monitor from what is on your phone, phone/tablet - > monitor/TV. Am looking for a way to display on tablet what is on the pc-monitor (or TV). PC graphics cards having HDMI out port available.
This video was extremely helpful. Thank you very much!
Will the sound come out of the TV? Or do you need to plug the phone into separate speakers ??
Very neat and professional advice and demonstration. thank you
Very helpful video showing how things work. Thanks. By the way the number of pins in microUSB port depends... so some Samsung devices also use 5 pin and this even depends on region. I.e. Samsung SM-T311 devices for GB uses 11-pins ports and for the rest of the world use 5 pins.
This works w/my HTC one m8, but when I put it in full screen on KZread there's a huge lag in video compared to audio, and video quality decreases. Any idea why?
very useful video. thanks a lot! please let me know if the Blackberry Q10 is able or not to be connected via MHL
Thank you for the video, it was very helpful for me!
great video dude! thanks for the help.

Really need some help here iv tried to actually do all the steps with an mhl adapter close to the one your using but still havent been able to make this work. I bought this new off of wish and it does charge my phone also bought a new hdmi just to make sure it works and havent gotten it to work. I'm using a Samsung j3 and and not sure if this differs with TVs on the input for mhl to hdmi mirroring. What are your thoughts??
Jeremy - I am trying to connect my Amazon Fire 7 (9th Gen) to HDMI monitor (not TV). Have MHL adapter (micro USB to HDMI - powered) but monitor will not pick signal? I am doing this to turn the Fire 7 into a PC/Browser etc (using a BT keyboard/mouse combo)
Hello I am having an HDMI flat screen TV with analog input and output with a slimport phone how can I mirror my phone to the TV also what type of HDMI cable I would have to use for this
Hi, Thanks for your video....I want to mirror my tablet to my TV....TV is a Samsung Smart TV...Now since the aspect ratio of the tablet is 16:10 and TV is 16:9...I will see black bars on both sides....Will the MHL Adaprter resolve the issue and still project the full screen....In your video you have mirrored a phone which has a 16:9 aspect ratio...Ca n you please show how will we mirror a tablet with 16:10 aspect ratio....Tablet could be a Nexus 7 or Samsung Tab 4...Please suggest...Also can you give the exact name of the MHL Adapter...
Can we do this with projector 📽???
will the active cable or adapter still work if my phone is not MHL?

Thank you for explaining the difference between active and passive MHL cables. I have a Samsung galaxy A71 which has the MHL capability but after trying so many HDMI to USBC cables I have been unsuccessful to connect my phone to my smart tv. All those cables worked with Galaxy S8 and up but none with my A71. Would you please tell me what brand or kind of HDMI to USBC cable I need to get to work with my galaxy A71. Many thanks, emilio

Will this work for watching movies, tv shows though and app with out using WiFi? Only the internet that the phone provides?
Thank you. I read a lot of information about what I needed but still couldn't figure it out. I guess I'm a visual learner because after watching this I get it!
Hi, I have a question for the wire version. Can you turn off your phone and still able to cast it to the TV? I'm curious because I don't want my phone to overheat (emulation and having the screen on at the same time). Cheers

If my phone, a Alcatel Flint, is not MHL compatible, what adapter do I get to make it compatible? On the pin adapter, do I need the 5? Any help is appreciated.
Hi, Im looking for something like Input will be my smart phone's LCD connector out and other end should be HDMI so that I can connect my smart phone to TV directly without having to cast etc. Basically, I want my Smart phone as CPU to my 55inch TV without casting/MHL cable(My phone won't support MHL out)

Hi i am trying to connect S6 ti a monitor. will it work??
Hey. I need your help. If you can... Have an LG V20 w/ unlimited data & laptop that i want to watch hulu & KZread on. Don't have Wi-Fi or house internet. I see an mhl adapter will send it to a tv.... But. Will it also work for a laptop? If that's right... how do i charge the phone and cast/mirror the screen while in use? I just can't figure out what to buy. Out of the hundreds of pages read and videos watched, you explain things so that folks can understand them. Or is there another solution you know of to make it easy? Either way, Thanks for the time. Have a nice day.
Do I need the otg adapter for my Samsung Galaxy s7? Or can I just buy the mhl adapter with the three connections?
Is there a way to only display parts of your mobile display to your screen?
Jeremy, thank you for the useful information. My device, however (Motorola Droid Razor M), is not supported by MHL. Do you know of any alternatives for projecting from this phone or screen mirroring?

Do you need a 11 pin to 5 pin adapter if you had a Samsung galaxy j3 emerge or will it work without it?
Hey Jeremy, i bought one similar to the black one, i plugged it into a power source and into my Note 3. i know you said i need a 5 pin to 11 pin converter, but the head fit perfectly into my phone which even started charging, but it didnt work. Do i need a converter in this converter? Is that why it didnt work?

+Lt. Albert There's no 11-pin-to-5-pin adapter. Get a non-Samsung MHL adapter.
ok, I got a Rankie for MHL to HDMI adapter cable set for my Samsung Galaxy S5 Active. I noticed that you use a small adapter between the Rankie and phone. The Rankie I thought was an 11 pin. Is that not correct? Right now when I attempt to hook everything up nothing happens. Yours is the only site that states the small adapter is needed. All other sites state you just plug in and done. I cannot find the small adapter nor anything on the package that states the usb/Mhl is a 5 pin. Help. I really don't want to spend more money on another cable set if it will not work.
hey! nice video... but I have a monitor without audio output. how use it for watching videos on KZread ? I get it ,we can mirror it but how to get audio ??
How do I tell the difference between an 11 pin and 5 pin? I bought the mhl adapter but not the other small adapter so I'm basically stuck with telling the difference between the pins? Help plz
Ok, so I've got a note 10+ and a note 8 spare , both with their factory included OTG adapter. I've got a pioneer avh-2330nex head unit in my truck. It doesnt support the mirrorlink in my phone or miracast or any of that. So it says. It also doesn't support android auto wireless. Question is , how do I mirror my phone to my pioneer, is there any way to take the required wired usb connection for android auto and make it wireless with some sort of wireless dongle? And would either or both jeopardize sound quality. Right now just running basic android auto wired with the music on my phone is basically flawless. Going just straight bluetooth even is impeccable, although I feel it is slightly lower quality than running through AA. So just curious what my options are. Surely theres a way to pull all this off. I'm just not as sharp in these areas as I'd like to be. If u got any tips I'd appreciate it
Ok so I know the Galaxy J3 isn't MHL but do you know what adapter you would need to connect to an HDMI adapter?

Any MHL cable should support it. e.g. www.walmart.com/c/kp/mhl-cables The direct HDMI-MHL cable requires the display to support MHL. A standard MHL adapter will work with any HDMI display.
Good video, but I am uncertain which cable I need. Do ALL Samsung devices use 11 pin or does it vary? The device I'm looking to use is the Note 8.0 tablet, but I can't find any information on how to find out which one I need.

hi there thanks for the video. but i have a question. I damaged my phone to the point where my lcd does not work (note 3). so i cant see anything on my phone but i know it is functional cause i still hear things when i press on the damaged screen or when i adjust the volume etc. i cant do screen mirroring because obviously i cant navigate anything on my phone. my question is if i get this adapter will it automatically show up on TV or will i have to still choose options that require me to navigate through my phone? which i am unable to because again its broke i cant see anything on my phone. As soon as i plug everything in will it just show up on the TV? in your video it seems to just automatically show up on TV but im not sure if you had to do anything on your phone the first time you connected to a TV. please let me know. thanks

Yes, but the problem is that if screen and touch are broken, you need to connect a mouse and a TV. Also, your phone needs to support OTG and MHL
is the micro usb from the cable wont work if you plug it in the device directly... you have to use that adapter.??
what do you call that connector with red cable, thanks!?
