In this song, the weaver-poet Kabir imagines the loom of the body chanting the name of Raam, an image which ties labour to devotion and work to worship! By imagining God as a carpenter who crafted this loom of our bodies, Kabir asserts the dignity of those who labour with their hands, subverting the traditional caste hierarchy that deems their work as 'lowly'.

Mooralala belongs to a lineage of Meghwal singers, who migrated from Rajasthan to Kutch about 300 to 400 years ago. Now settled in the village of Khadeer in Kutch, Mooralala says he’s an 11th generation singer, and that his ‘santaar’ (tambura) must be at least 130 years old! When he first heard the sound of the tambura, he recalls that he was 8 years old, and he was so enchanted, he couldn’t sleep!
