Poet Ravidas urges us to drink this kind of wine, get the taste of an eternal experience, and then many things begin to shed - our pride, intellectual pretensions, fake posturing and all the self-delusions we habitually carry around. It’s a particular quality of Bhakti poets like Ravidas and Kabir to mock the stupidity of our social conventions in the same breath as invoking a taste of the ultimate experience. Mooralala’s magical tambura and Parbat Jogi’s 'mast' dholak evoke a bit of that drunken taste in this recording.

The voice of Ravidas is resonant with that of Kabir in so many ways. They both belonged to so-called ‘low caste’ communities, with Ravidas being a 'chamaar' (leather worker) and Kabir a 'julaaha' (weaver). They both lived in 15th century Kashi, or Varanasi, a major pilgrimage centre for devout Hindus in north India. Most of all they express a powerful ‘nirgun’ or formless experience of the divine and combine it with a sharply iconoclastic social gaze.
Mooralala Marwada belongs to a lineage of Meghwal singers, who migrated from Rajasthan to Kutch about 300 to 400 years ago. Now settled in the village of Khadeer in Kutch, Mooralala says he’s an 11th generation singer, and that his ‘santaar’ (tambura) must be at least 130 years old! When he first heard the sound of the tambura, he recalls that he was 8 years old, and he was so enchanted, he couldn’t sleep! Currently his 12-year-old daughter Nandini, learns from and sings with him. He moves with ease between nirguni bhajans, traditional folk songs and Sufiana kalaam. Contact Mooralala at +91-87585-51661
