    I'm sure touchscreens in cars will be outlawed some day. The fact you have to take your eyes off the road with this thing is dangerous especially when you have to go through several menus to get what you want.

    It’s madness isn’t it? I wonder why using the touchscreen you already own is dangerous and punishable under the law but using a touchscreen provided at an additional cost to you by a massive corporate manufacturing entity is absolutely fine and dandy. Especially when these in car screens are never as good/responsive/familiar as the one on your phone.

    I have the standard range SE. I set the car for TJA (traffic jam assist), it retains this setting and just drive the car without enabling it from the srearing wheel controls.The only setting I might change before starting off is the heating. Hot weather aircon on. Cold weather heater. This can be turned on and off from a physical switch and temperature/blower adjusted from the steering wheel controls. The LFP battery, 50 kWh, gives me an urban non motorway range in the summer of 200 miles plus, does not burst into flames when things go wrong unlike the NCM batteries and can be fully charged as often as you want matching the capacity of an 80% charged long range battery. Its fast, handles well and is quiet. That's my assessment after 8 months ownership. Thanks for the video with your usual enthusiasm, I do love them.

    On batteries: the Standard Range uses an LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, which is actually NEWER technology than the Long Range's NMC (lithium nickel manganese cobalt) battery - not the other way round. It's cheaper technology, but offers less range - though it makes up for this by being significantly more robust and long-lived than its NMC size-equivalent.

There should be enough buttons to keep most of us happy. Other than that I really enjoyed the video. I still think it’s a shame you can’t add things such as rear camera to the base model. The 'value' factor needs some very careful consideration, especially if you're planning to buy one on finance or PCP. EVs are reportedly losing circa 50 to 60% of their value in the first year, and dealerships are reluctant to take them in part exchange because used car buyers don't want them. So you can very easily end up tens of thousands of pounds in debt with a car worth next to nothing that nobody will buy from you anyway. That is a terrifying proposition.

    The majority of people buying EV’s are company car drivers to avoid benefit in kind tax liabilities and their employers are also making savings in NI charges; furthermore EV’s can be written off against capital allowances. The upshot of all this is the rest of us will have to make up the shortfall to the exchequer elsewhere. Electricity in the UK is principally generated from the burning of fossil fuels so where’s the environmental benefit? Emperor’s new clothes!

    "what this car would look like on a decent set of wheels, rather than the generic awful EV wheels." EV wheels (or some other kind of aero wheels that are quite flat with little void area) are necessary as they lower drag of course. (Lowering drag is more important than brake cooling on a car like this.) It's a shame that buyers seem to reject the idea of having fully or partially faired rear wheels (like the Citroen DS or Honda Insight or Clarity), as that also significantly reduces drag.

    "ancillary power" You mean charging the 12V battery for the radio and other ancillaries? For the main propulsion, a 4 square metre roof can only produce 1.2kW (1.6hp) on a perfect summer's day (assuming 30% efficient panels, which is far above the best, & 1000W irradiation per sq. m), which is not enough to cruise at 70mph on the highway (at least 12kW/16hp, usually a bit more) -- hence why solar challenge cars have far more panel area than just the roof, and ultra-aerodynamic styling and extremely skinny tyres to minimise drag & rolling resistance far below the levels of a regular passenger car! A typical charger is of the rate of 50-250 kW by way of comparison. The hypothetical 1 kW solar system on the roof of a car could produce 4 kWh in one perfect summer's day -- which is not nothing compared to a typical 50 kWh battery, but it's also not a lot... To be honest, you'd be better off having a much larger solar system on the roof of a building and plugging the vehicle into it. Since these EVs are building built down to a price, they are probably unlikely to include the feature of a solar panel roof that is of marginal benefit. However, the *ultra-aerodynamic Aptera EV does include a solar panel roof* (and bonnet)... It's almost similar to a Solar Challenge car. *But* perhaps such an extreme high-efficiency vehicle is (sadly) in stark contrast to the tall boxy SUV EVs that most motorists would actually be willing to buy?

    It's not just the purchase price that's the issue, it's depreciation. Let's say you walk into an MG dealer with £30k in a suitcase, and walk out with that car. MG's actually have much lower depreciation than most EV's, but 3 years later it's going to be worth about £18k when you trade it in, so wave bye bye to £12k for 3 years motoring. Compare it with Dacia Jogger (a larger, even more practical family car), It's going to cost you £18,300 at the dealer, it's going to be worth £13,000 after 3 years. So you're out of pocket by £5,300 after 3 years or £6,700 better off than if you went for the MG. £2k a year is a pretty significant saving. I'm getting my figures from Glass's trade guide, so they're likely to represent real world costs. Now bear in mind that the MG is projected to be the lowest depreciating EV out there, the figures for any other EV brand will be much worse. You'd have to be either very rich, or very dim, or hold shares in a cobalt / lithium mining company to want an EV.

Is it just because the MG brand (and LDV) was all that was left? Did the Morris (and Austin) trademarks even come with SAIC's purchase? 🙂 I appreciate SAIC are planning an electric roadster called the "MG Cyberster" and perhaps having two passenger car brands (both Morris and MG) would be too much to handle from a marketing point of view?

    Once the general public becomes more educated on the net carbon footprint vs ICE cars things will drastically change. Already huge uproar with the ULEZ expansion, the US are onto the cobalt mines which violate all sort of human rights/slave labour practices. This sort of EV just wont succeed. China have been producing and storing their vehicles to boost sales figures. Plenty of videos online of built cars sitting rotting. Lastly, disposal i imagine will be a problem like with all things battery powered.

  • @kristoffer3000

    @kristoffer3000

    Studies show that EV's are far less polluting to produce as soon as they reach a certain amount of kilometers, I forgot the number but it's not all that high and that was ages ago, they've gotten better at it now. The US loves slave labour, why would they do it so extensively at home but be against it abroad? You mean cars that are waiting to get shipped? Like all manufacturers do? That has been the industry standard for as long as we've had car manufacturers that produce in large scales? Disposal shouldn't be the goal, recycling should be the goal and it is slowly improving though there's not enough financial incentive to do it and like with all things capitalism nothing is ever done that cuts down on profits.

  • @mitchymoo1986

    @mitchymoo1986

    @kristoffer3000 I agree the US loves to stick their oar in where they may try to gain resources. Doesnt detract from the fact Africa produces a huge amount of cobalt as well as other things required for EVs. Literally children working in these places, not just for cars, but for electronics too. Regardless of political bias, it's disgusting. The US will be highlighting this purely on the basis China is buying up land in huge amounts, but they arent wrong on this one. As for the studies, there cannot possibly be anything accurate to draw from any of them. Tech is constantly changing, there is no one size fits all for batteries or ways to charge. Until that's the case, i dont think EVs will get natural traction. Price points are still way too high, infrastructure of the grid is poor just about everywhere, and companies like Toyota are making huge strides with more efficient engines and Hybrids. My 2 pennies worth would be to bet on them instead. Way more tangible data in the form of the taxis doing high miles. 2 decades worth of making them has got to be worth more than hypothetical studies.

    @kristoffer3000 As for the cars being held in China, BYD were the ones caught with drone footage i think. Acres filled with brand new cars rotting away months after building. I think the consensus is that they build them to win more government funding/contracts. In turn they boost EV "sales figures" to thr outside world. I wouldn't expect anything less from any country that is vying for more economic power.

    You do realise that most of the mined cobalt is used for sulphur removal in fossil fuels? Newer battery designs have managed to ditch cobalt completely. When the battery capacity has dipped below a useful level, say , in 15 or 20 years, it can be repurposed in grid energy storage systems. No need to dispose of because it is still useful. Ultimately the contents can be recycled.
