✅ 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗼 : leaselo.co/notaguru-mg4
Welcome to my very honest review of one of the most talked about cars in recent times, the MG4. The MG4 EV is MG's answer to many, more expensive, rivals; no more so than the VW ID.3 aginst which it goes head to head.
Is the MG4 the best electric car for the money on the market today? does the MG4 live up to the hype?
Please let me know your thoughts about the MG4, is it the best value EV to date? what are your thoughts on the range issue?
I'm Jim Starling, please watch my other car reviews, always honest; always unbiased.

Winter temperatures, using the heater and motorway speed is the trifecta of challenges for an EV. It’s why most now have heated seats, heated steering wheels as it’s far more energy efficient over heating the air (no engine to do that for you). In the summer, it’ll be the other way around - though similar on the motorway though regardless of temperature. Thanks Jim.

Yes, I reviewed plenty of EV’s but never in such low temperatures and I’ve never seen the range estimations so terribly wrong. Hopefully solid state batteries will improve matters in years to come.

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru I think that it's also worth pointing out that many EV users set the heating on for a while before disconnecting their cars and driving. That leaves the major heft on your house electric, and so saves the car's battery. I'm not sure if SS batteries will reach the market, but I am sure that battery technology will improve radically over the next decade. I think that it will be that which will see the most radical change of all. As for the missing buttons, I believe that the 4 has 2 programable buttons on the steering wheel. It would seem reasonable to use one for heater controls, the other for driving modes. But yeah, I agree with you that the removing of buttons is definitely not a step forward. But this theme appears to have gained a lot of momentum in many testers' comments, so I think that this particular cost-cutting tech idea is probably not going to survive, and the manufacturer which responds most quickly will benefit most. There again, it was Tesla that started this idiotic fad (for removing buttons) and it seems to be the sort of article of faith that Tesla may live to regret... because I really don't think that Tesla will return to buttons unless they are dragged kicking and screaming into doing so.

I currently own a Skoda enyaq and something I’ve found is the range is most adversely affected by the number of short journeys in cold weather. Everything you have said is true but also the battery management system actively heats the battery to help prevent degradation and can use around 6Kw doing so. This is a major increase in energy usage from the battery if you are only driving for a short enough distance that the battery heater is constantly in use.

Great review! Unlike most other reviews it’s refreshing to hear about it being actually fun to drive! Everyone else seems to have forgotten that driving dynamics and fun are also important to those of us in this sort of market too! I’m looking at one as part of the motability scheme due to my poor health, there’s not much interesting to us petrol heads on there but a well balanced all ev gives something new to the mix! The only other car I could get excited about on the scheme is the Alfa Romeo Tonale and that’s an suv so already loses drivers appeal (I currently have a 4.4 V8 BMW 545i) Thanks for the great review, you might have swayed me towards the geek side over the stylish Alfa!

Lovly review, points to considder: 1. UK versions do not have heatpump, in Norway our only version (Luxury/Trophy) does have. That helps range vise in the cold. 2. SE do not have heated steering wheel or heated seats, that's only in the Trophy (In Norway we only got Thropy or Luxury as it's called her). One can save a lot energy using heated steering wheel and seats, and keep the coupe heater at a lower setting (top tip is to preheat the coupe while atatched to the grid). This is the name of the game to keep the range up in the cold for EVs. 3. In our petrol/diesel cars we can use a lot of energy and we only notice we have to fil up more often, an EV make our energy consumtion very obvius. Thats the real difference. Btw. Waiting for delivery of our MG4 Luxury her in Norway.

Hi Jim, loved the review! Les Burrows is a man that knows, & he covered a lot of what I was going to say. Of course even IC cars suffer from reduced range in cold conditions, (my Citroen hdi gets around 15% mpg reduction at this time of year) but of course heat is a waste product in IC cars, effectively free energy. It’s a shame you didn’t get to try the trophy model, as I’d have liked your opinion on the rear spoiler which I detest! Not just because of it’s looks, but it actually produces so much drag that the range is reduced by around 15 miles with no tangible benefit. My other pet hate is the lack of a rear wiper, and I wondered if you had had any issues with rear visibility because of this? Talking of rear visibility, if you want to avoid having the obnoxious spoiler, you won’t want the Trophy model. Unfortunately, this means you also won’t get a reversing camera, which I reckon is essential on this model as the view through the rear window seems to be pretty limited. What was your experience? I agree that this a very good car, which could be made into a great car with just a little more effort. As it is, though, I think the MG5 is the better choice overall.

  • @DefinitelyNotAGuru

Hi R B, thank you. Yes an ICE can get a slightly lower MPG in bad weather but the MG4 was very dissapointing in that regard. On the last day I had the car I charged it to 100% and it showed an estimated range of just 181, that figure then dropped by 24 miles during an 18.6 mile round trip on a mixture of 30 mph and 50 mph roads - it wasn't especially cold either. The lack of rear wiper did annoy me a bit but I forgot to mention it in the review. I'm hoping a version 2.0 of this can be a very special car as they got some of the difficult bits right (i.e. the drive). I'm hoping to get an MG5 in for review before too long. Cheers Jim

Great honest review. I own a 19 reg Renault Zoe and experience the same range problems in winter although my full charge mileage readout reflects this dynamically after every charge, it tells me I'm getting around 120 miles at the moment and in the summer it increases to around 185 miles, maybe the mg4 needs a software update to do the same with its readouts. I'm holding out for the Mg4 sport later this year which sounds promising!

I took delivery of one the week before Christmas the standard range version. During the cold spell I calculated a range of about 135 miles after a longish run out. Viewing other KZreadrs the summer range should give 180 miles, I hope. WLTP 218 miles hmmmm. My sons now five year old 30 kWh Soul still gives 100 plus winter miles probably due to Kia build and a heat pump. The car does drive brilliantly but has some early issues of people getting locked in their car, unable to escape and a gearbox oil leak. I do like the car but it is dependent on a few things improving come the summer months. Nice video by the way.

Pickup my MG4 SE Long range on Friday. It replaced the Zoe I had for the last 2.5 years. The Zoe suffered miserably in the winter months with range, especially if you ran the heater constantly, but in the Summer months got close to it's claimed range if you drove it like Church on Sunday. I expect similar from the MG4 due to the battery chemistry.

This is the one they're all talking about. Not only will the MG4 provide many who would like to move to an EV, the chance to do so, the MG4 may also serve as a marker to the other brands, and force them to be at least a little more competitive.....and if that happens, we all win. Nice one Jim. MG have also smartened their MG5 up nicely too in the new version, which is useful, because it's the *only* fully electric estate car on sale.

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru I'll be looking out for that Jim.... the extra practicality of the MG5 is what would appeal to me personally. The MG5 is reported as being "softer" than the MG4, so I'm keen to see your take on it. Softer appeals to me, being of advancing years, and a more delicate constitution. It isn't difficult to see why MG's UK market share has rocketed in the last 18 months or so.....

Hi again Jim you know what, I love you and your channel and what you do on it, and this latest review you have done is the best review I have seen yet on the MG4 by a mile every word in it is very true, my wife’s had an SE standard range car for around 2 mouths now and she likes it and for what she does in it short journeys shopping trips etc its fine, we have been EV owners now for a couple of years with the MG5 so know only to well the ups and downs of owning one, I am also a member of the MGEVs owners forum and appear on there podcast sometimes so I do know and have learned quite a lot about all the tricks of driving EVs But Jim there are several issues with the MG4 many of them silly little things which can be very annoying to some and if you spend a little of your time reading some of the forum you will see for yourself some of the owners of these cars have had no end of problems trying to get some MG dealers to except the issues the car has and MG motors also refused to listen to some of the issues as well. You comment about the range of this car yeh from experience I can tell you it is poor very poor in fact I will be very surprised if it ever hits the 218 mile range it is said to do in fact several owners have said how poor it can be at one point our car was doing 2 mile per KW so a range as low as 100 miles I’m sure that will improve once temperatures improve but 218 I don’t see it. It is a great drive it goes around corners like it’s on rails and irons out everything you can throw at it on most surfaces You said in you video it’s a nice car and I have them same words as well but it could be a Great car if MG motors would listen to the owners but they don’t and won’t. I do feel sorry for some of the dealers to be honest they have been left to sort out problem on this car that should never have been there the oil leaks being one. The lack of any lighting in the rear and no grab handles to assist you getting in and out with sills that are so wide it is really hard for shorter people having to go into the screen to change many settings if you need to is not only poor but is dangerous when on the move. I could say a lot more but Im sure you have heard enough thank you for you time and the video and keep them coming yours are the very best in my honest opinion. Truthful or the point with no holds barred thank you. Les

I have long term owner experience of two EVs, a Hyundai Ioniq and a Peugeot e208. Both are affected by cold weather and driving style, but the Hyundai is affected much less, and you can rely on the range it predicts you will get to within 10 miles, in summer I'm getting just over 200 miles of range and in the winter more like 175 miles which is plenty for everyday use. As you can rely on the quoted range it's also easy to plan appropriate charging stops on long journeys, so I've never suffered range anxiety in this car. The Peugeot is a different matter. I like the car a lot and as a "city car" it’s fantastic but I don't like taking it on long journeys. When fully charged it always shows a range of 187 miles, but in sub-zero temperatures you can watch the range disappear at almost 2 for 1 proportions especially if you're driving on faster roads. Having said that the car serves my needs well and I'm happy with it. Not all EVs are the same, that's all I'm saying.

Other than looks I believe that MG have pretty much nailed it. Spec, handling, price, all on point. My Mrs. is about to order a Niro as her next company car, which comes in at a smidge over £43k, that's £11k more than the Trophy version of the MG. That's a lot of money for for what is in effect the same car ability wise. But when you take into account the BIK rate on EV's it works out only a couple of hundred quid more . In conclusion, if I was buying an EV with my own hard earned cash, There would be an MG on my drive. As a company car, I'll go get the best I'm allowed.

I would love to try this car out, for all the minor faults, it seems like a very good buy. The fact it is fun to drive is probably the biggest plus, it is the main reason for owning car in the first place. The decrease in range is bit of a problem in colder days but with my typical range of driving, this would not be an issue. Just need to find few thousand to get my first EV. I've seen people install a small usb lighting system for the back if needed.

my ev has a normal range od 240-250km when it's around 17-24 degrees Celsius, but that quickly drops to some 150km when it's close to or lower than freezing temperatures. In the recent cold weather, I've lost at least 30 miles of range with the heating on. The higher the fan speed and heat, the more range is lost. Given that these temperatures are experienced pretty rarely throughout the year, I'm not overly concerned about this, it is expected. It just means that if doing a long journey a little more planning with charging stops might be needed, but given that most of my driving is within a 50-mile radius it isn't a problem for me.

You'll find James - who works as a mobile EV servicing and repair mechanic - using an MG5 as his service vehicle, complete with shelves in the rear. His example had (at the time he posted the video) 40k miles on it in just about a year or so. James went through the car in the video, pointing out the good bits, and any not so good bits (there weren't many). Nothing had failed, and the battery was showing 90 odd percent state of health. It's worth a look...... Oh, and James had placed a large storage box under the bonnet as a froot. It appeared to function rather well.

Last time I was testing MG4 I drove it for atleast 7 hours, after a while my estimated range increased a lot (drove it like I drive my old Toyota Auris 2,0 turbo diesel with a bad clutch). I had plenty range (12C outside if I remember correctly) so in the night I decided to see how fast I could kill the range from 180km towards zero before giving the car back (this was after midnight and I put the car on charger myself at the dealership so I could do what ever). Lets just say zero to ... to zero 3 times, and some very agressive driving on backroads cut the range very fast down to 50km and charging warning. It's clearly very much up to the driver what range one's getting on these EVs. Fotnote: I have "heard" the MG4 does 160kmt real gps speed (170 kmt indicated), and the brakes seems good.

I agree it's annoying that the range indications differ so much from reality. But actually it's the same in gasoline cars. For example: today I drove my BMW X1 (from 2020, so modern technology) for about 15km. I started with a range estimation of 165km and ended up at 130km when I stopped for gas. So it also went down more than double the actual distance I drove. It goes both ways: if I suddenly start doing a lot of motorway kilometers, the estimation is too low. This is why many reviewers say the best way to drive EV's is by having it show battery percentage instead of miles remaining.

The GoM lied when you got it so the drop in the range sounds worst than it, rather than dropping from 267 to 131 after 67 miles it really dropped from around 210 to 131. I would say if you don't try hard for efficiency at the low temps we had then 210-220 is about right. In September when I got mine then 240-250 was about right for 'normal' driving. That means you're losing about 10-15% for the low temps. The numbers above are what I've been seeing in mine and I'm making no effort for efficiency. I use normal driving mode and have the AC set to 23 degrees.

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru "Guess 'O Meter". Same thing as a "remaining miles" on a petrol cars display. Both are just guesses based on your driving history so should only be regarded as a guess. Chances are when you picked up the car the trip had been reset or someone had been trying hard to get the best range out of the car and hence the high value. There's no way in negative temps you'd get that. When it was -10 here 200 miles was roughly what I was getting but at just under zero that was around 210-220. Lots of short journeys in the cold will hammer range as well since the heater needs to be on full blast to get the cabin warm, longer journeys the impact of the heater is less since the heater will cycle once temperature is reached.

About the range. The reason I didn't buy the long range is because it's a NMC chemistry. That's worse in every way from the LFP chemistry on the standard range aside from battery density and charging speed. Neither battery is particularly good in the cold (less than 15C) but the NMC is worse. The deciding factor to me was the cycles, you get up to five times as much on LFP and 100% usage, rather than 80%. Meaning that in everyday use the batteries are effectively the same size - although the LR can give you that much more on occasion. _However,_ you can preheat the battery (a function designed to ready it for fast charging) - if you do this a little on a cold day then you can expend a little energy raising the battery temp and you get that back and some with the miles/kWh. This really should be automated but you can do it manually very easily.

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru It's worth googling LFP vs MNC, there are some great sites explaining the science from safety to environmental impact in lay terms. For me it was the major decision because in five years time the SE and LR might have similar ranges even within warranty. Couple of other things you missed: there's a bug with the cabin pre-heater, if it's plugged in but has finished charging (because you set it to off-peak) then it won't preheat until you unplug the charger. I think they're working on this. The onboard charger is only 10A, so even if you've got 3 phase then you can only get 2.4kW. This is very low. If you're charging 10 hours overnight off-peak with the 3-pin you'll not even half charge the thing. Sure, you can get the 7kW wall box but that's a big expense. There's no heat pump on the UK version but there is on the Swedish. Obviously the Chinese think it's tropical here. Oh, and it's probably worth mentioning that SAIC is 100% owned by the Chinese Communist Party. We can take a dim view of WV's ethics but it doesn't extend to genocide. Well, not recently anyway... On the plus side it does have vehicle to load but they don't include the adaptor. That was a really top review btw. Hats off to you.

David. The battery issues may be no more than a year or two from being sorted now, with BMW stating they are beginning production of solid state batteries.... I had heard a year or so back that both Ford and BMW were trialling solid state battery technology, so it seems all has gone well? It should be a winner for everyone, resulting in physically smaller and lighter battery packs, but with higher energy density, which will result in higher range and faster charging capability.....

  • @davidmurphy563

    @davidmurphy563

@@Brian-om2hh Yeah, it looks really promising. Of course, the devil is in the detail - and the price - so we'll see what they can actually bring to market. LFP has a density of about 250Wh/kg. So a 50kWh battery is around 200kg. Solid Power are promising almost 400Wh/kg so the same battery would be 125kg. A very significant improvement. Of course, it's really about the price, not the weight and they're suggesting it'll be nearer price parity - which I assume is on a power basis and not per density. They only promise 1000 cycles though. LFP gives around 5000 so it's not as long lasting, at least in the first iteration. But, you'd have to hope the early tech will improve. It will use an NMC cathode so you'll get oxygen as a bi-product (inherently dangerous) and cobalt is an environmental nightmare. That said, plenty of cars use it. Anyway, the battery industry is infamous for misleading promises which fail to deliver. Let's see what they can actually bring to market.

The short range SE uses LiFePO4 cells, and not Lithium Ion. The LiFePO4 cells do not work so well in the cold, so they do not efficiently charge or discharge at low temperatures. In a way, using them helped get the cost down for that entry car. Frankly, despite the price difference, the Trophy is by far the better choice.

Is there more thought/discussion needed by buyers re the country of origin of the manufacturer? So many new EV brands coming out of China every day but should we be more focused on if we should buy from these countries manufacturers? Is there a moral hazard that needs consideration? Discuss!

I just drive the cars and give my opinion on them. I’ll try to leave the politics to others more expert in it than I. But….. It also raises the argument about hypocrisy of people not buying an MG car because it’s Chinese but using their iPhone, laptop, tv, toaster, microwave, pen, tyre, drill, usb cable, gaming console, smart speaker, cctv camera, led light, battery, calculator etc and then ordering egg fried rice and chicken balls for dinner. I’m not a fan of their government politics to say the least but I couldn’t function without Chinese made products in my line of work; it’s sad but true 👍

I know very well how it works but didn’t expect such a ridiculous drop in efficiency. I drive different EVs all the time and have never seen such HUGE range drops in anything else. I'd personally struggle to own a car with this issue, especially as so many others are far less affected.

I have an MG5 trophy with just 1000 miles driven so far. The range is really concerning. It’s been cold yes. MG claim 250 WLTP. @100% charge. The displayed range is 200 miles. I drive 6 miles and that drops to 160 miles range. WtF!!!

For the money yes. This will open the door in a way Elon never will with high end cars. Only China can really build the worlds EV fleet in time to control global warming. YMMV. Remember this is a U.K. designed car. It’s what we are both good at combined. And it’s affordable. Most people can’t afford a Tesla.

Still way overpriced. It's like $45000 CAD for a small car. A model Y is only $60K. This car should be in the $20K range if not less. And model Y should be in the 30K range. It can lose all the touch screens and tech for all I care. Got my Prius C for $24K on the road and I overpaid. People are too rich these days.
