MF 4840, CUMMINS V8, TURN UP the SOUND!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We are back at Field of Friends this time with one of my all time favourite tractors. Since i was a small boy watching one of these work the back field i have never forgotten the noise it made. quite possibly one of the best sounding diesel engines ever made. Turn the sound up and enjoy!

As a kid (1981/2) I used to love riding in a 4840 the contractor used on a Gehl forager, when they chopped our silage. An absolute monster of a machine back then. I'd only just started driving tractors at the age of ten when he kicked me out the cab and told me to jump in a MF595 with a spare trailer on to run alongside because the rest of the carting fleet weren't getting back from the clamp quick enough!

I’d like to have that engine for a week, it would start with flick of the key, the engine wouldn’t hunt and it wouldn’t smoke. I’ve overhauled and repaired many of these engines over the years, this was my favourite engine, loved the sound and my favourite rating was the VT 903 350 horsepower. The VT 903 was also used in tanks but the ratings were as high as 600 h.p. I’m told, it would take a huge radiator to cool the high horsepower. Great video,

I started working on a farm about a month ago, they have two 4840s. My first week in I'm thrown in the thing with this massive Salford thing on the back. In 20 minutes I hit a power pole and took out a 69k volt high tension line that came down on the tractor lol

DANG George...when you bumped the throttle up my first thought was 'if only that MF had straight pipes!' And you be right about the 'torque curve vs. hp' - the ideal is that both top out almost evenly and that Cummins V8 was noted for that. I think the only diesel engine in today's agri application that match's that older Cummins is the MAN diesel engine that both Claas and Fendt use - just my opinion mind you. Anyhoo...another great video! Stay safe - be well - many blessings.

I drove an IH artic eight wheeler out West of Hay NSW at 'Ravensworth' back in early 90s. It was a model I had not seen elswhere, was not a 'Snoopy', more a Steiger lookalike though not quite that either. It had a V10 in it but can't recall the engine brand. It was about 420 hp. If anyone got any ideas, feel free to comment.

Or is it b/c it’s an older Cummins with many hours on it? Great vid George & yes it would be something to hear the old boy with twin pipes or straight pipes. Lol Cheers

You lucky bugger.👍. That Cummings sure sounds sweet. Find a Muir Hill 161 (Perkins V8 Twin Exhaust - the same one as in Matchbox toys) to drive and I'll give you £100 for your favourite charity. We had one back in the 70s/80s brought with a reversable JD 7 furrow plough. The plough lasted about a season, I think cos my family were too tight to order the needed part for the broken down plough from the States - obviously something hydraulic. They went and put a convertional 5-6 furrow plough on the 161. What an absolute waste of a machine. It finaly died about 86/87 with a cracked block. My dad and uncle used to thrash the living daylights out of it and I always felt sorry for the "Honey Monster" as I called it.
