    I have the Neos and absolutely love them. I wish I had started with Meze, could have saved a couple of thousand dollars. Nothing comparable at the price point for build and comfort. Even well past the price point, you're going to struggle to find a better built can. Cool video, appreciate the lo-fi vibe. Take care homie ✌️

    I've been a happy 99 Classics owner since 2016. I can totally vouch for their build quality and amazing sound. I got lucky picking these wooden beauties up for $199 while they were crowdfunding them back in the day. Best money I've ever spent on audio equipment. Meze Rai Solo's are waiting in the mail for me today. Keep up the good work and stay safe!

    Nice review from the road Randy. I love the look of the Meza 99 Classic and the sound signature sounds like it would be great, have to start loading the piggy bank. Just a heads up, the volume came out really low. Thanks

    I have both HD6XX and the 99 Noir and the HD6XX are more refined with recessed bass. Mids are close but because of the mid-bass of the Meze they seems a little more congested. Some say that the Classics are boomy!! Not that much at all! They are ultra easy to drive and to listen to for any genre. The silver cable, even the single ended one adds refinement surprisingly well, and it’s an evident perceivable upgrade. HD6XX really likes tubes (like a Vali2+), Meze really likes solid state. Paired with an Audioquest Cobalt they are awesome.

    I really love the way these headphones are constructed, with wood and metal in the appropriate places. They make a walnut and silver version (though this may be phased out?), and also they made a maple and white version, but that one seems to definitely stopped production. Durable materials and good construction is a huge plus. I only hesitate about their published response curve that shows a significant dip in the ~3kHz region. I like closed headphones in some ways (very little noise for others in the room and isolation for me), and I like open headphones because they don't cut me off as much. So, I have repaired my ancient Yamaha YH-1 and slightly less old AKG K501.

    This is one of the Headphones I want to get, but I'm waiting for a different set to be available from Thinksound. They are back and will have an over-ear soon. Have three of the in-ears and their on-ear, the On1. OV-21 is coming soon and then I will work on the Meze. Thinksound uses wood for their headphones as well.

    I mean I’ve heard there’s differences in the pads between them and the old 99 Classics probably just because the original supplier went outta business. But aside from that, same walnut cups (different finish), same leather retention strap, same metal parts, same case, just different colors. The sound signature is identical aside from pad differences. You do get only the short cable rather than both.

  • @odioalospoopers

    @odioalospoopers

    Actually they seem to be better, since meze changed the pads for ones that are slightly bigger and seem to negatively impact the sound quality, and the extra pads in the noirs are the original 99 pads(can't confirm since they haven't arrived)

    Hard a pair to evaluate, but while they just fit my big 7 3/8 size melon and large ears, it was not that comfortable. I thought they were great sounding but for larger head and ears, Hifiman and Audeze fit better, at least to my experience. Luckily, you can get a return option and test for yourself. I also have heard that the cheaper version with plastic cups don't give up much.

    These are my daily drivers for working from home. The mic on them is just a brilliant move from meze. Clamp force is a bit too much after 3-4 hours but it's not unexpected, most headphones hurt after so long. For music they're fine, I bought the full brainwavz oval line and settled on their pleather pads. The stock pads are not for me, they don't seal well with glasses.

  • @JeradBenge

    I completely agree on the Brainwavz pads, they solved my only gripe with this line of headphones. I have the Neo version, so a little lighter. I don't run into the clamp force issue at all now.

    I never really got the value to material quantity ratio involved in making a pair of head phones. You can buy a decent pair of bookshelves or an inexpensive pair of towers or one single decent tower for the same price. The volume of materials involved in building a speaker versus a headphone is substantial, but you spend the same.
