🥒 ABOUT BEFRS:
Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

It's also kind of therapeutic, take few days to stop, take a zip of mezcal and talk with your grandpa, your friends and sometimes let some of the past to catch up, deal with it and remember the good things, things that can be also recognized as traditions or family values. My mother freaks me out in those days when she sees hummingbirds flying around the altars, where she come´s from used to believe that the souls come in form of those birds to visit the house.

In INDIA we also have same tradition ( Hindu tradition ), about a fortnight is reserved for paying homage to the ancestors every year. This 16-day period is known as Pitru Paksha, or shradh in the Chaturmas period. It is believed that the soul wanders in various worlds after a person dies. To ensure it finds peace and tranquility and blesses those who are alive, people perform shradh rituals and repay their debts to the dead ancestors.

Mexico and Philippines share a lot a common history together and are basically brothers, Philippines was colonized by Spain using ships built in Mexico using wood extracted from Jalisco , and they mostly used Mexican crews( many different indigenous people from Mexico) that’s why we have so much in common and why we were so interested in Philippine liberation in WWII. Even if you're not mexican nor live in México you can set your altar for your beloved ones, remember: some flowers, some candles, if you're christian you can put a cross and, most important, the food and the photos of the people you're celebrating. Some of us also include season fruit and incense. Keep in mind that we don't celebrate death itself or as a concept, we celebrate the life of our gone beloved ones and the beautiful memories they left.

Awesome that you brought up that the celebration varies throughout Mexico (even family to family). Several aspects and motifs are common, but even some Mexicans aren't aware of how much it varies. By the way, my brother and I describe mole as Mexican curry to foreigners. Too many ingredients and variations exist.... not to mention that describing it as a savory chocolate sauce (black mole) was confusing for most people.

How eloquent is this cohost? Such a shame the colonisers came and diluted such a beautiful culture.

I really adored this video. I am of a religious tradition that celebrates a similar event on Oct 31. We also create altars to the dead and cook their favorite foods and welcome them to come visit that night. Would love to travel to Mexico during this time!! Thank you, Sonny for showing such respect for their traditions even if it is something unknown to you.

The thing about Dia de Los Muertos is that it's not supposed to be scary. It's supposed to vibrant and joyful celebrating your loved ones. Every year, I love painting myself as a Catrina and helping my mom with the Ofrenda and keeping tradition alive ❤ 🇲🇽

I’m not Mexican, I’m Salvadoran but even while having financial problems I’ll let my kids eat the chicken and I eat the left over rice. That’s how I was taught. The kiddos come first.

You really are the best Sonny! I'm really glad to be able to enjoy this and while it made me hungry for Bisabuela's molé, it made me nostalgic as well. As we remember our passed family and ancestors during this holiday season, may their spirits be with us ❤️ (my Mom passed away in February on Valentine's day, my Dad passed in 2009)
