Mexican Americans are still fighting for land they were promised generations ago | Nightline

The Southwest was once part of Mexico. When the U.S. took over, families there were promised citizenship and protection of their land. Their descendants are still fighting to reclaim what’s theirs.
Connie Gonzales is an heir to Jose Nicolas Ballí, who was given Padre Island by the King of Spain. After a 22 year search, she learned her family was owed mineral royalties from selling the land.

During the time of the Mexican war all the western part of the United States, was northern Mexico. What this means is that all the Native Americans from those western states (which use to be northern Mexico), the same people as the native Mexicans. Most of the native population during the Mexican war fled deeper into Mexico ( which was know back then as southern Mexico). What I'm trying to say is that the Indians are alive and stronger than before because the native Mexicans are the Indians and the Native U.S Indians, are the Mexicans the are one and the same.

Vibin, since we're talking facts, Spain claimed parts of the US for 300 years, Mexico claimed CA, NM, TX for a brief 15 to 25 years. and US since 1848, 170 years. American continent history had been land claims, land disputes, border issues, treaties, independence, border changes, land purchases and war, conquest, and more.

Try “A Glorious Defeat”. The author postulates that the only reason Mexico, at the time corrupt, chaotic, unjust, survived as a nation was that they unified in defeat after Mex-Am war. They acquired needed capital by selling northern territories to the U.S. most of these territories were settled by Americans anyways. Before the war, governed by the hated Mexican Army, hence the legend of Zorro. Poorly governed an taxed without benefit. Californios almost universally supported acquisition by the U.S. we paid Mexico more for their northern lands than we paid Spain, Russia, and Britain for the Oregon Territory, The Alaska, and Florida combined. Mexico $15 million plus about $3 million in debt forgiveness. Spain, $5 million in debt foregiveness Russia, $7.2 million Britain, goose egg. We did pay France $15 million for the LP.

Ever since mendigo trompas stated he was going to run I have opened my eyes more and more to look into my roots so I know and show that I have every right to be on this land. I did my DNA and I am 45% Native American, 25% Spanish, and a mix of several other small ones. Scottish, Irish, Portuguese, african and so forth. I have no English or Asian at all...... But, my DNA runs from Canada all the way to South America. It explains and supports a lot of what we already know. I call and consider myself a NATIVE MEXICAN AMERICAN. I've studied and looked into a lot more. I've tried to be a humble person, but, with all these attacks on Mexicans and non Mexican Latinos and myself I've been having to fight and defend myself towards these racist people. Even towards sell outs or certain individual racist people that say they are Texans, chicanos, or even Latinos themselves in some way. Mexico and Mexicans have been in every American war. They have contributed to what America is today. We deserve and will bee here in America the U.S. of A. Like she said, we are not going anywhere. We are here to stay.

As a result we have today Americans who are true owners of this land. Take as an example Spain which stole many Catalan, Basque lands and proclaimed them as Spanish. Plus murdered all of the natives in the Americas. Do you think that your country is innocent? Of course not, btw, there is no nationality as mexican, do you mean spanish and mix of natives? Yeah of course they are seperate nations that put under the same name and as result got MEXICAN like nationality. Your comment is ignorant and hypocrite in all of aspects.

I read about the original Mexican family of oakland they owned the entire land of oakland california. When The Mexican-American War was over Americans started to move into California and this dirty American lawyer approached this family and made them sign paper work in english knowing that the did not know how to speak or read english. Turns out he robbed their entire property and they were evicted. Its a vey sad and it really mad me angry that anybody would do something so heartless and ruin an entire generation into the ground.

Mexicans aren't the only people that went through pain though. The Irish, Italians, Armenians, Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, and black people and Africans! The power you hold is your walk in love and education-literacy.

I hope that the whole world is watching this so everyone can see what a dangerous nation the USA is. The USA is a very young democracy which basically started as a democracy in 1964. Before that it was exclusively a land owned and in honor or white male Anglo-Saxon men. This means that even if you were white but Spanish or white and Armenian, Jewish or Italian you didn't qualify. I live and teach in EUROPE. I tell my students in my classes, DISCUSSIONS, and even radio programmes to which I've been invited that if you play with fire, even if you don't get burned, you may get slightly hurt. The USA is a TERRORIST nation and should be placed as such by any law-abiding nation out there. It is a nation which foments wars, invades others, grabs your wealth. PLEASE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD. Stop believing the USA is a nation of democratic principles. It is not. It's territoy in its entirety was stolen. The USA is basically a STOLEN LAND, occupied, grabbed from FIRST NATION PEOPLES. It is a land of racial divide and racial hatred. If you want to live in peace, stop associating with THE USA. Limit how many Americans can visit your nation. DO NOT send your children to study in the USA. Do not invest in American businesses. Learn to see the USA as a dangerous nation, which it is.

I’ve been trying look into my family background and this sounds like something that might have happened with my family. Would Mexican Americans change their names to sound white out of fear of having their land taken from them? Would they try to hide that they were Mexican? My family dose not talk about where we come from.

Me too, but I moved east after graduate school with my family. Many of the early Chi Mexicans came from TX and the Southwest because they were displaced and getting lynched. That's a significant omission by this video, that many who once owned land were forced to leave their land and are now living in the Midwest.
