Metropolis (2001 Anime) Opening Scene

Since this movie first came out I have always wanted to see a live action feature done. I think The likes of maybe Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson or Ang Lee. Someone who can do it justice.

Remember getting this when it first came out on dvd, my girlfriend at the time came over, thought it was a game and put it in the PlayStation 2. She absolutely fell in love with Anime after watching it. Great film, I’m going to dig it out!

I saw it on HBO repeatedly as a kid. It was pretty haunting I tell you. Whenever the theme came on my cousins would ask me to switch the channel. Good old days. I remember discovering an anime tv channel here in Hungary a few years later. The animes back then had that somber mood to them. Really put a teenager's mind to work haha. I'm still in my twenties but it's a regular pastime of mine to revisit these visual works of art.

One of the BEST openings in anime or film history! From the sounds of Duke Red's footsteps as he ascends his pedestal, to the imagery of his speech where it goes from sepia tone and film damage to vibrant and technicolor!

Honestly, the live action version is Fritz Lang's Metropolis. I know its a silent black and white german film, but its the inspiration of this film 100%

Yeah but while it is a fantastic visual spectacle it is lacking a bit due to things like "what the heck are the worker's building/what are the machines they are slaving over do?" and some elements from the book being left out- like all the religious and occult symbolism and comparisons, which not only gave you something to focus on instead of what the heck all the toil was actually doing, but expanded the social conflict to include the conflict between religion/superstion and science. On top of that bits like conversations between the leader of metropolis and his mother flesh out his characterization. Basically the book expanded a bit on the range of the conflict and tied together the whole theme while the film let the visual spectacle take center stage and while its great it does have some flaws. This version of metropolis has its own themes with the whole, robots and the nature of what they mean for the working man being there while the original metropolis book and movie only had the one robot, who was mostly there to manipulate the public for her creators plans.

Half correct. Long story: A single still from Lang's film inspired a then-green Osamu Tezuka to write a original story about robots. This Metropolis is an amalgamation of Lang's film and Tezuka's Manga, with screenwriter Katsuhiro Otomo also adding in themes from his Akira manga/film (specifically the arrogance of man and inevitability of violence and calamity)

I hate to be the party pooper here, but there must be someone in this world who hates Japanese anime as much as I do. I only came here cause I saw it referred to with the Fritz Lang original which was brilliant.

I hate anime but this film is straight up incredible its beautifully animated. None of the tropes of modern anime with the gratuitous boobie and panty shots, laughable dialogue, awful designs, stupid scenes being played straight, cringey tropes like those high pitched women with baby voices that people who have never touched a woman always have as their profile pictures. I will be the first to say anime sucks but this film is incredible, i would definitely recommend it.
