    The song in way is saying "I lived a life that wasn't mine, for you; now that it's over I can't forgive you for not realizing how wrong that is."

    It is about a guy (him, you, me, anyone) who was never free to be himself. Instead, society forces us to adopt certain behaviours from the moment we were born. They tell us what's right or wrong, what's good or bad, whether legally (laws) or culturally (through the opinion of others). So the guy grows up and feels trapped and he can never escape from this prison. Then he just gives up. He doesn't care anymore and feels he might as well die right away since it's not he (the guy he was or could have been otherwise without all the social pressure he had to conform to) anymore who lives but some zombie who has had to live by society's standards. So in a sense, the unforgiven could refer to society as a whole. And I would greatly appreciate more reactions from Metallica's KILL'EM ALL album

    To clarify, they have three Unforgiven songs. This one, Unforgiven II from their Reload album, and Unforgiven III from their death magnetic album. The differences between the songs really show their development as a band.

    I would say that it's overrated, since there are many filler songs on it. But compared to the crap that came after it even the filler songs are great, so it feels wrong to call it that.

    This is from the album Metallica (1991) commonly referred to as the The Black Album. If you watch the documentary "A Year And a Half in The Life Of..." it chronicles the making of this album and the monster tour that followed...in it Kirk Hammett is struggling to nail this solo but when he finally does he says it's the solo he's been trying to play his whole career. This album is also where they started getting away from their thrash tendencies.

  • @metalmellie4371

    Watching the doc, you hear a solo Bob Rock is trying to force on Kirk to play. Lars tells Rock it's not Kirk's style and it might take him 6 months to learn it. Kirk has his own idea for a solo and Bob says, "Go ahead then, impress me. Let's see what you have, go ahead." Then Lars is like go ahead, you have his permission. Kirk then lays down this now epic known solo that's legendary! So the solo was Kirk's. It is not the solo that was originally supposed to be in the song. Thank goodness for that. Nice job Mr. Hammet.

    Slower solos tend to have more time for emotions to breathe. Faster solos are like a high-energy explosion.. over too quickly in most cases.. but devastating in their raw power.

  • @shadowstalker1120
    @shadowstalker11204 жыл бұрын

    Regarding the solo: Kirk Hammett (the lead guitarist) was picked at, criticized and borderline bullied by the producer to perform a "real" solo, rather than the original solo Kirk had come up with for the song. So what you hear in this track was recorded in one take as a retort to the producer and comes from a real feeling of frustration and anger.

  • @davidvied2507

    Not one take, in the making of the album you see him playing the solo many times but it isn’t flowing right, he clearly frustrated and pissed. But yes Bob kept ragging him and pushing him and after all that, he just fukkin let loose and ripped one of his best solos ever not to mention, what I think is one of the most killer solos in rock/metal. He even said in the making of vid that he had been trying to play a solo like that for quite a while. Killer solo, and killer they documented it and it’s awesome to watch it unfold and become a classic fukkin jam 🤘🔥☠️

I was subscribed to your other channel and just hit the subscribe button for your new one. There is always such substance and insight to your reactions. Keep doing what you do! Have you heard Metallica s&m 1 and 2? They played with the San Francisco symphony for 2 concerts. Michael Kamen (conductor of the symphony, musical director, and Metallica fan) took Metallica's music and built and orchestral score around it. Even writing new songs for those specific concerts. Absolutely stunning. My favorite song(s) of those 2 concerts is from the first concert. "The Thing That Should Not Be". From there Kirk Hammit does this amazing transition into the song "Fuel" it gives me chills every single time. It is worth a listen

    To "dub thee Unforgiven" is to dub someone other than yourself Unforgiven. This is a common mistake for people first listening to this song, partly because he is using a very old form of language (his father used to read the Bible to his family before bed). So yes, this song is indeed about how he (James Hetfield) was raised into a certain religion wherein he was alienated from the young kids he grew up with, and he dubs his parents (specifically though, his father and the religion) Unforgiven for causing him to grow up and become someone he wasn't meant to be.
