I'm not sure underrated is the right way to put it for a song that won a Grammy award on an album that was nominated for three or four including best rock album while garnering itself a 78/100 on metacritic. That is a high score for anything on metacritic. Underappreciated for sure. The whole album is criminally underappreciated. When it came out there were still a lot of people sour over St.Anger and to lesser extent the Load era. Many of their casual fans and die hard metal head elitists who scoffed at Metallica after Black, Load, or St.Anger instantly dismissed DM or gave it a skeptical listen while trying to find negatives. Hating on Metallica was the thing to do for some people in the late 90's and especially early 00's. They finally released a very thrashy and heavy album with standard tuned guitars and solos after 17 years. Exactly what everyone was hoping for. It was on pretty much all the album of the year lists for 2008, earned all kinds of awards and nominations yet a lot of people still trashed it. Take away the clipping and loudness thanks to Rick Rubin and you have one of their best albums that can stand with their 80's classics. I think it is better than Hardwired, and yet for some reason people say that was the return to their older, thrashier sound though it was really DM eight years prior. More people had forgotten, forgiven and more nostalgia kicked in between 2008 and 2016 so that is my theory on that. I don't think many people would say My Apocalypse is their favorite because though many love a pure, fast thrasher there are just more dynamic, easier listening songs that consume more of peoples attention. I adore Damage Inc., and Dyers Eve but they aren't my favorites from those albums and I am in the majority there. Rant over lol. I just get frustrated with how overlooked Death Magnetic was and still is.

ChernovFan100 Yeah, he is totally wrong. Kirk wrote this riff in the middle 2000's, not in 1983. It's and old school sounding riff, no doubt about it; but it was recorded in his tapes with ideas for the Death Magnetic writting process. As i said, i agree the song totally sounds like an Exodus song. It would fit in RTL album aswell in fact, but that is pretty normal as Hammettt is the guy who named the Exodus band, and the one who wrote some of the best riffs from RTL, Creeping Death's middle part included. So, summing up: kick ass riff, solo and song, but from the 2000's. Well done Kirk!!!!!!!!!

Connor Wilkerson Connor, are you kiddin me bro?? Go back and watch it again, but now paying some attention. The riff he said he wrote when he was 16 is the one from the middle part of Creeping Death, from 1984's Ride The Lightning album. He plays a riff from My Apocalypse aswell on that interview, but he only says it's a tough part he always practice to do not fuck it up when that song is played live. Don't confuse people, man...

Tossing body, mannequin. Spilling blood, bleeding gas. Mangle flesh, snapping spine. Dripping bloody valentine. Shatter face, spitting glass. Split apart Split apart Split apart Spit Spit it out. What makes me drift a little bit closer? Dead man takes the steering wheel. What makes me know it's time to cross over? Born to repeat until I feel. See through the skin, bones they all rattle. Future and past, they disagree. Flesh falls away, bones they all shatter. I start to see the end. In. Me. See the end in me Claustrophobic Climb out of this skin Heart explosive Reach in, pull that pin Violate, annihilate All wounds unto my eyes Obliterate, exterminate As life itself denied Fear thy name as hell awakens Destiny inhale the fire But we've crossed that line Into the grips Total eclipse Suffer unto my apocalypse Tyrant awaken my apocalypse. Demon awaken my apocalypse. Heaven awaken my apocalypse. Suffer forever my apocalypse.
