METALCORE'S NOT DEAD? Wage War "Manic" review/reaction

Ойын-сауық

My review/reaction of "Manic" by Wage War is here! How does it compare to "Blueprint," "Deadweight" and "Pressure"? What is the future of Wage War and how will they evolve metalcore? Do "High Horse" and "Death Roll" hold up as singles?

So watching a review from Banger TV the guy hosting it just recommended this band called Desolate and their new EP The Fate Of Destruction Is The Joy Of Rebirth. I kinda reminds me of Wage War's EP, but even more unique and off the wall. Very cool stuff!

At least for Blueprints and Deadweight, I loved that Wage War was THE “generic” band. Just classic, straight to the point metalcore with sick riffs and breakdowns. I don’t think people necessarily looked at them to be innovators but rather just wanted straight up heavy and catchy metalcore and they filled that role perfectly

This is exactly the comment I was looking for, Wage War get shit for being generic but since blueprints came out ive always felt like they do “generic” tighter and cleaner than anyone else Up until their new releases I’ve always been happy to go to architects for metal core innovation and wage war for consistent 2010s metalcore goodness

Wage War is actually pretty decent for the fact that they've been playing a metalcore with at least actual hearable riffs, all the modern metalcore bands now playing overproduced super edited djeny riffs that are barely even hearable in songs so i respect them for it, their sound is just tight and right.

What’s really funny to me: Everyone goes on about how High Horse “sounds so different”....but it literally sounds almost beat for beat like “Fury” from their Pressure album. Go listen to Fury from Pressure...and then listen to High Horse again and tell me those are two different songs. Still listen to High Horse lots, but it isn’t their most original work.

“Low” might be similar to other tracks but in my opinion overall it is one of my favorite metalcore tracks. I think they just do it better then other metalcore bands. The intro riff and chorus are perfect but I do agree the riff is similar to architects. I just feel they do what they do so well. The clean singing and lyrics are huge too. I prefer listening to them over most metalcore bands. There a special band in my opinion

The riff isn't just similar to Architects, it is literally almost the EXACT same riff just a few notes down. Listen to the intro of Doomsday and then the intro of Low. You'll hear it. And I'm not saying that to try to ruin it for you - Low is one of my favorite songs by Wage War, and Doomsday is one of my favorite songs by Architects. They shouldn't have ripped it so exactly, but it still worked (obviously).

He's talking about how his wife calls it hardcore core LOL that made me laugh, it actually reminds me of the "new speak" from the book 1984, which was a new way for people to speak and write that eliminates all extra and creative thoughts (ex: adjectives don't exist; beautiful and ugly and their synonyms become good and negative and to describe various levels of good and negative the words double, triple, plus, and minus can be used to supplement) so metalcore core in the book would probably be like "metal double plus core" for example haha idk, don't pay attention to me

Wow, that Manic song sounds like everything I would hate as a boomer, but I love it somehow. I want the full album like that. Here's a chicken and an egg question: are cool bands unpopular because they're not featured on Octane, or does Octane ignore underground stuff because nobody would tune in if they played, like, Revocation and shit? Is it impossible to push underground bands, or are they still underground because radio doesn't push them?

Manic also didn’t reinvent the wheel, but it DID do it well. It’s not my favorite metalcore release of the year because with most of the songs I thought to myself “I’ve heard this before…. But I like it” It seems like every song was influenced by something or other and those influences are pretty obvious - Manic was NuMetal inspired, Death Roll was After the Burial’s “Behold the Crown” inspired, and most other tracks are very “Architects core”, but they just did it really well. Even though there was nothing super new here, I think this album redeemed them from their last release. Bands do 1 of 2 things: 1) they start to go butt rock, their fans lose interest, but regardless, they keep moving in that radio rock direction. 2) They try to go butt rock, get it out of their system, and then go back to what their fan base wants with an explosive release, and I’m glad Wage War chose the later of the 2.

To be fair, it did feel like that garage rock scene with bands like the Strokes, Interpol, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs was centered in Manhattan. That being said, I've always found suburb kids to be a lot better at making their own fun than city folks. Plus Manhattan post 2008 crisis is way too expensive to be a starving artist. Seeing Ice Nine Kills prominently is so weird to me. The first ever show I played at a real venue was a Battle of the Bands that we lost to Ice Nine Kills.

Wage War is what I think of when I think of modern metalcore band, the modern metalcore band. Not that that is a bad thing, they are clearly very talented song writers, they have got some really good bangers and have got the production values for a modern metalcore band to back them up. So late to the party, just subscribed.. but this album came as a surprise to me. The only wage war album I listened to before this was the Pressure album, and I thought it was very generic. This album though blew me away.. I will say some of the songs have aged poorly for me and sound sort of dated now, but overall it was a different offering. Manic honestly gives me very nu metal/trap metal vibes (tell me the bridge with the panic guitars and the vocals doesn’t sound like a modern Korn song) and is something I think a lot of Metalcore bands can pick up on a thrive with (Architects sort of did it with Animals, but I honestly like this song better than that one) I’ve quite honestly never heard a song quite like Death Roll, which was the first song I heard from this album (only heard a couple After the Burial songs, not a fan, maybe I’ll try again later). That bridge is so nuts and still gets me amped as hell. Teeth is sort of that Wage War/Trap/nu metal hybrid that balances both very well. Honestly has me tuning in to what’s next for the band. I hope they keep transitioning and growing their sound.

Death Roll sounds the best to me out of all those songs. I liked that a lot. That reminds me why I even got into metalcore. That melodic part was sick also.

Been a fan of Wage War since they put out Deadweight in 2017. They are easily one of the best modern metalcore bands and I'd put them next to Fit For A King, Polaris and Currents. Manic is a great record and it sounds like they combined all of their music elements since Blueprints and added a lot of experimental vibes to them. They are doing great.

Hi Finn, I really enjoy both of your channels. I have a suggestion for the future of the main podcast. Now that the world is slowly opening back up, you could maybe take the show on the road and visit scenes and upcoming bands around the US for a start. Why not head to Cali and report on the H/C scene? Bands like Scowl, Gultch, Zulu, Drain, Sunami, Dead City and more are definitely worth the attention and it would be awesome to see you around them and at their shows in a gonzo style. All the best and thank you for the podcast.

I have only been paying attention to your channel for the past four months maybe, I am interested on your take on those bands, I have to look more into it. I just can't get behind what you consider butt rock. Actually, when I first listened to this album, I was literally thinking 'Most of this is such generic butt rock, Finn's gonna hate it' (except for the obvious exceptions such as High Horse, Death Roll and Manic of course). And on the other hand, I would never have considered Stitch butt rock before, yet you call it that in this video. Honestly, I even think that Stitch and High Horse have a very similar energy to them, which makes it even more confusing to me. This isn't hating or anything, I'm just genuinely curious where you draw the line 🤔

I agree 100%, Stitch is by favorite my favorite song from them since I don't like butt rock and even a lot of their heavy stuff sounds very generic to me. That one song is really fucking good though, they nailed it.

Also confuses me why he doesn’t consider BMTH since That’s the Spirit to be butt rock. He loves their new single die4u, and thinks it’s some bleeding edge musical innovation, but all I hear is butt rock. 🙃

Same. Witness is the most progressive song Wage War has ever written and he called it Octanecore just because it has cleans lol. I understand where stuff like Gravity can be seen as generic and sellout, but those are two extremely different songs with two extremely different soundscapes.

I've never really understood the buttrock reference with Wage War at all. Heavy screamed verses, sung "pop" chorus'. That's Metalcore/Post-Hardcore. That's the genre. Now the new Asking Alexandria, that I get is buttrock, because it's just rock music at this point. Maybe I'm missing something. Is A Day To Remember buttrock?

I kind of wonder if a lot of the reason they stood out from the pack is that they are using unorthodox tunings. I mean...I’ve even heard it referred to as “The Wage War tuning” (and yes, I know Architects were doing the octave drop tunings before themselves but Architects were only going down to F# at the time while Wage War went down to F). There is something about that F1 note that just grabs you as something different (same with Northlane, as they have their own tuning colloquially named after them too).
