There are actual multiple gameplay functions to cigarettes. It's a light, it's a laser detector, it makes you aim better, it makes Snake heal stress, and enemies can smell the cigarette and walk over to investigate the smell which is a nice way to lure in individual guards. It also prevents Hornets and Bees from attacking you because of all the smoke. So while yes the game story tries very hard to convey smoking is bad that's only because of how beneficial smoking is for the experienced player. It's not a coincidence speedrunners even use the Cigars in MGS3. They're a very handy tool for the creative mind. It has a unique risk reward and ensures you always have some kind of support item if you didn't explore the maps well enough for more items like Diazepam. I really want to emphasize that the enemy SMELLS YOU. Cigarettes are your main source of luring guards without using any noise. Very ingenious and subtle design. He only smokes when he's stressed. That's the core idea behind the cigarettes in the story. That's why at the very end he stops. He's no longer stressed. He accepted his fate and is happy with the work he has done.

Your analysis of how an adult human could or couldn't swallow a pack of cigarettes is spot on, but unfortunately there's a much simpler explanation. Snake is CIA trained to do this - and since he knew his stomach acids would be suppressed, its far easier and safer to just put the cigaretts into a small plastic bag and swallow them as a somewhat elastic cylinder than a hard cardboard rectangle. This is legitimately training that operatives get and Snake would most certainly know it.

I used to smoke like a pack a day from when i was 15 to around 24-25. Then i quit smoking and switched to those first popular sub-ohm tank vapes that slowly developed to give off bigger and bigger clouds. Now recently I switched to a very tiny vape that gives off as little vapor as possible and uses flavorless 20mg/ml nic juice that's taxed and approved by the government over here. And half the time im out of nic juice anyway, so i'm slowly moving on to those nicotine pouches like Zyn. I have a long term goal of going fully off nicotine, but im slowly tapering it down. This has been a weird method but it worked for me. It's all about misdirecting your brain not to focus on it too much and letting it happen on its own. I quit doing drugs that way too, replacing certain addictions with something less harmful, then slowly lowering the amounts while switching to something even more harmless until its just not worth it to do it anymore. I'm still smoking CBD crumble every now and then, and maybe taking an extra vyvanse or some shrooms once every blue moon if i go out partying with friends. But that's a far cry from being a daily smoker of both weed and tobacco, or constantly doing street amphetamine, X, and various script pills while drinking booze. That's really not the method for everyone tho. But everyone has some method that minimizes the pain while gaining the benefits of quitting. It's a long term investment thats 100% worth it

while a lot of this information is not new to me, you explained everything very well with the respect, weight, and sincerity it deserves. with the information i didn't know, such as the difference between cigars and cigs in the context of big boss and solid snake as characters, it was so beautifully written that i understood immediately what your point was. the script you wrote was really elegant and strikes a perfect balance between being poetic and intriguing with being informative and clear. i could show this to someone who knows very little about metal gear and they would still understand the connections you are making between smoking and the metal gear franchise. extremely refreshing to hear someone talk intelligently about metal gear's topics, themes, and its deep relationship with the world around us. it's frustrating and exhausting to hear people treat metal gear as something that shouldn't be taken so seriously, as it's "just fiction", but again you treat every topic with sincerity and the respect it needs, especially on the topic of smoking. fantastic video, i'm clearly very (not) normal about it LOL. i love it when other people are deeply analytical and critical of metal gear. as an aside: disability is a topic brought up a lot in metal gear. i wonder if you'd a) ever want to make a video discussing it and b) feel knowledgeable and respectful enough to do so. the way you discussed old snake's mental illness was very respectful and it was really nice to hear someone acknowledge that. i read the mgs4 novel instead of playing the game, and i thought the novel touched upon that beautifully--- you as well.

I know I'm maybe like 1% of smokers but I love it. I started as an adult, it gave me more breaks as a cook. Now, I smoke maybe a pack every two months? It's very rare I have a smoke these days, I toss my pack out for being stale before finishing them. I love a good cigar every now and again too, a real stogie is nice. Whiskey and smokes are a lovely combo for a night with friends. Granted, I started smoking herb at 14 so maybe that has something to do with it. I feel no addiction, it's just a pleasurable experience. I know for non-smokers that could be hard to believe. I'm sure for regular smokers, my lack of smoking is hard to believe too.

15:00 I’m not done watching yet but they also sell soft packs of cigarettes. They’d probably be more flexible and easy to swallow. Maybe filterless too which would make them smaller. I’m not saying one should do it, I’m just saying it’s more plausible than it seems.

That's why in the game you only get minimal lighting from it. You can barely make out Snakes face and can only see things that he's right in front of. You basically have to crawl to see anything with the cigar. Fire your gun gives much better light than the cigar if you're that desperate for a light.

i don't think people know exactly how many uses the smokes had in this series. there were uses like if you didn't have any drugs to stop shaking when using the PSG1 you could slightly tame the trembling with the cigs. in MGS3 you could use the cigar for light in the dark cave before you get the torch. also i think the bees won't attack you if you have it equipped near a shot down bee hive. in the first game the cigs can extend your time on the final countdown. yeah the cigs had the obvious smoke and lasers thing but they did a lot more if you looked for it.

@mycardboardbox I meant the sections. The hand glider jump needed the wind blowing up in odder to make the jump. If the wind wasn't blowing right, that meant if you jumped, you wouldn't make it and die. The cigarettes' smoke allowed the players to see where the wind was blowing and know when to jump. You can also see the wind blowing with the gas grenades to and yes, you can use the gas grenades to make the jump. It's a lot harder but doable. But Snake isn't smoking to calm his nerves, I mean, he could be, but the game doesn't directly tell you that

@boardbox it is just some of the delivery, grammar and sentences. it is a great video but I got the same impression, no knock against you especially as the editing and info contained is great. but when a line like "despite the fictional nature of the brand" is said in reference to lucky strike, one of the most famous brands of cigarettes in the world, it seems like AI yknow. If you meant lucky striker you didn't say that, I believe thats the name used in metal gear 1.
