@@purplesamurai5205 I think Ocelot is a lot like Snape. He's a horrible sadistic person, who also does some very heroic self-sacrificial actions. Fans often think his heroic actions are a redemption, but they're really not. He's just a person who has a mix of good and very bad qualities. I'm not sure that Ocelot advocated for total anarchy. He willingly became Liquid Ocelot, and Liquid Ocelot advocated for total anarchy, somewhat similarly to the original Liquid Snake. It's unclear to me how much Ocelot would endorse Liquid Ocelot's particular agenda. We never get a very clear sense of the exact relation between Ocelot's true motives, Ocelot's "Liquid" persona that he transplanted onto himself, and the original Liquid Snake (who Liquid Ocelot was sort of a Venom Snake-esque copy of). The truth about Liquid Ocelot (hypnosis & nanomachines) was a pretty contrived last-minute plot twist, but it does raise a lot of lore and character questions that I find interesting to think about.
@purplesamurai5205

@@Megaritz Snake and Ocelot are different in a very important way. Snake isn't a sadist, like Big Boss he doesn't enjoy pain and simply enjoys the thrill of battle. Also, we do know anarchy was Ocelot's motive by MGS4 because it was confirmed somewhere (it's heavily implied in game) that Liquid was beaten out of Ocelot and by the end it was Ocelot talking.
@1sdani

@@Megaritz I think we can pretty cleanly assume that the ideal of complete anarchy described by Ocelot at the end of 4 was spoken by Revolver, not Liquid. He says in the English version that it's "our father's dream" but in the original Japanese, he just says it's "father's dream", which could go either way... until you remember that Big Boss didn't want to create a world of anarchy, he wanted to create a world united against a common foe, which is a world he got for a brief moment in 1995 and again in 1999. Indeed, Big Boss' dream was far more similar to The Joy's dream of a world without borders. However, Ocelot's dream is more of a world made of nothing but borders, the exact opposite of The Joy's dream, a world not of peace and joy, but of war and sorrow. "Father" being The Sorrow makes a lot more sense to me personally than Big Boss, if for no other reason than because Ocelot was Big Boss' best friend and it'd make zero sense for him to misunderstand Big Boss' dream.
@purplesamurai5205

@@1sdani That's Dead Vector's theory. I completely disagree with his idea of The Sorrow, but the fact still is that Ocelot's speech doesn't really match up with Big Boss, Zero, or The Boss. If anything, it matched Armstrong.

Tbh, both endings of MGS1 are kinda canon in MGS2. In the beginning of MGS2, Snake uses the stealth camouflage to get onto the Tanker. At the end of MGS2 after meeting up with Raiden on Arsenal Gear, he tells him “if you run out of ammo, you can have mine” which Raiden responds “you got enough” and Snake confirms this by saying “absolutely. *points at bandana* Infinite ammo”. Pretty interesting and just realized this not too long ago despite playing every game multiple times

It's very likely that Kojima intended for the Otacon ending to be canon because he liked the Snake/Otacon dynamic better than the Snake/Meryl dynamic. It's also very likely that Rose and Campbell in MGS2 weren't actually ever supposed to be the real Rose and Campbell. But it's also very likely that in order to tie everything together neatly, Kojima had to slightly retcon these decisions for MGS4, because he wanted to have MGS4 be a big "reunion" celebrating the series as a whole.

Peace Walker is great, but you have to understand that it was a PSP game, meaning that it's meant for handheld. "Pick up and put down" gameplay. 3-5 minute long missions. Cutscenes are mostly replaced with audio tapes that you can hit play on and then put the PSP in your pocket and listen to the tapes on your headphones for 15 minutes. A business minigame that you're meant to put a few minutes of time into every so often for a long stretch of time. Essentially, you're meant to play it for 10-40 minutes at a time, rather than in long stretches like other Metal Gear games. It's been released for console now, but the entire structure of the game was made with it being a game you play for a little while at a time that it might feel a bit jarring trying to play it for hours at a time.

The B&B unit is a commentary on sequels. They're not just FOXHOUND, they're Dead Cell, and they're the Cobras' emotions. Each member has the name of a FOXHOUND animal and the same fighting style, the emotion and trauma of a Cobra member, and are expendable tools like Dead Cell. They also each have a weapon from a Dead Cell member - Laughing Octopus has Solidus' tentacles and P90, Raging Raven has Fatman's bombs, Crying Wolf has Fortune's railgun, and Screaming Mantis has Vamp's knives. The whole point of these characters is that they are too much. For a long time people thought MGS4 was nostalgia bait until Peace Walker and MGSV came out, where Kojima proved that he can actually write different kinds of stories and validated the idea that a lot of MGS4's content was a commentary on how people rely on series' crutches when making new entries. It feeds into the "war has changed" idea, since a lot of the metaphors involving Snake and the world also apply to Kojima and the gaming industry. Maybe Drebin and their backstories are convoluted, but that's also the point. Don't get me wrong, the execution is not perfect. MGS1-MGS3 were written by Kojima and Tomokazu Fukushima, which gives them a unique quality and cadence compared to the rest of the series written by Kojima and Shuyo Murata who joined on MGS3 and continued throughout the series, although MGSV did include two other writers. Not saying that Kojima can't write, but Fukushima gave the series a more natural delivery of dialogue compared to MGS4 and MGS5. Again, I do think Kojima did this intentionally to make the world feel even more alien, which fits in with MGS2 and MGSV's ideas about how language and information can control reality, but it still could've been done better.

there's some licensed stuff in MGS4 that would make it hard to keep it all in I think. But most realistically, Konami doesn't care and have either lost the gold source copy like with other games or really still want to be petty against KojiPro.

The thing that gets me about the MGS4 discourse & using the whole "Kojima didn't want to do MGS4" thing is in almost all those discussions, people leave out that he said the same thing after 2 came out, 2 was going to be the final installment he directed at the time. 3 also allegedly was going to be the final MGS game he would direct, so I hate using that point against 4 considering that was a trend that happened after literally EVERY Metal Gear he directed post-2 with the exception of Peace Walker. And nowadays 3 is considered the best installment of the franchise by the majority of fans, so I really hate using that talking point against 4 to attack it when this has been the trend since 2001.

Ocelot was the true hero in the end, he managed to make the boss' dream real.

Ocelot advocated for total anarchy, to a scale not even Big Boss did. He was also a sadist, who enjoyed torturing people.
@Megaritz

@1sdani

@purplesamurai5205

That carti adlib that played when u mentioned vamp was jus what I needed for Christmas

there's some licensed stuff in MGS4 that would make it hard to keep it all in I think.
