The saddest part of this is the winners will not have time for the feeling to sink in and the losers will not have enough time to reflect and recover because of the league starting just days after the tournament concludes, which is barely what these legends deserve after the spectacle they gifted us with for the past four weeks.

Believe me the winners will celebrate it until the day they die. And most of the French players won it 4 years ago so it's arguably less hurtful. And the ones who would still feel bad might actually prefer to go to work and play for their clubs to help them move on.

if they were ever to make a Messi movie/documentary - that final is literally so perfect, you'd think it was embellished by Hollywood. A hero having his last chance at the 1 trophy that has eluded him, the hopes and expectations of teammates, a nation and the watching world. Win or lose, the game would be the footnote on his career and be used as ammunition for pro and against the GOAT debate. He'd won it all but would be able to produce the magic so often used in his career on the biggest stage in the most important game of his career? On the other side, a young prodigy who could himself become the greatest player of all time when he retires many years from now. A player who has broken records already on the international stage and will only collect and grow his own legend and was looking to build a CV and cement himself into the GOAT debate. Who would stand up and be the difference for their nation? Who would produce in key moments. The twists, the turns, the drama - you couldn't make it up! What a game, what a final. What an occasion.

What Scaloni did today was simply brilliant. In EVERY analysis and EVERY game, French left side was supposed to be targeted. Scaloni put Di Maria en the left and played every ball there, and it worked wonderfully. Nobody realized that France expected the rival to attack its left and had worked out ways to solve it. Nobody thought that the right with Dembele and Konde was the place to attack. I thought Scaloni would start with 5 defender line and cover Mbappe. He took a gamble and decided to attack a weak French defense. He chose to try to win the game, rather than not to lose. Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

As I sit in my parents house in the US a week after the World Cup Final - on Christmas Eve eve - I remarkably find myself compelled to leave a comment. First, to say a whole-hearted thank you to the Tifo crew. Especially as an avid football (soccer?) fan in America, you've been a wonderful companion as I've enjoyed this World Cup. Second and more importantly, I just wanted to say that I really admire the courage, honesty, and humanity with which you tackle the political side of football, this World Cup in particular. I think the mini series you did was simply fantastic. And Joe and Seb, your honest reflections on this world cup moved me. To hear you, members of the football media whose livelihood depends upon covering the sport, talk candidly about how your relationship to the game has grown more distant... that hit me. I love football, but I don't want to be blind to the darker forces influencing it. I really appreciate the way y'all broach those challenging topics. Beyond being an entertaining bunch, y'all have won my trust. I did also want to add, however, that in the midst of the political turmoil and the mass commercialization that was the world cup in Qatar...man there were some truly brilliant storylines on the pitch! Messi won!! Argentina won!!! It was a fairytale ending. There were some moments of patented Messi magic that transported me back to 2010 when I was a youngster and just developing a passion for the game. If you ever need a reminder of the power of football, just look at the scenes in Buenos Aires. I think my relationship to soccer (football) may be slightly different from y'all's living in the US. In many ways, I am a product of the commercialization of the game. I have no loyalty to any home town team... How could I? I support teams based purely on style of play. My teams are Barca, Man City, and Arsenal. I wanted to play like Xavi growing up, and then Messi became my idol. Watching them play filled me with a great sense of awe and beauty...and that's why I keep coming back. I sometimes feel like we live in a time of such great wealth and also never before levels of visibility into the fucked up ways that wealth has been amassed. It can be paralyzing. Football's no exception. I resonate with you question Joe, what do we do? I feel powerless. But I cling to the idea that there are parts of the game - a fundamental beauty in the creative expression - that exist outside of the corruption. And I do believe that. In a fucked up world, maybe the best we can do is keep shining a light, having these kinds of conversations, and centering true self-expression. I feel like y'all do that at Tifo for that I am a grateful subscriber!

I liked the chat on Qatar 2022 reflections, but as someone who’s been to 5 world cups, I must say this was by far the best organised and most welcoming tournament of my sample size. I went to 9 games at Qatar 2022 and honestly it was incredible to be able to go to so many games in 3 weeks. Equally, the football was phenomenal from a dramatic perspective, which is why the majority of people tune in. Having the tournament be signed off with the GOAT win and the future potential GOAT show his prowess, felt a fairy-tale fitting end. Unfortunately, I must add however, that I’ve never seen such bias from UK based media before. As a man born and raised in the UK to Iranian parents, the lack of understanding of the unique Arab / Muslim / Middle Eastern culture shocked me. The level of politicisation of pundits, when they have a minuscule, warped and completely surface-level understanding of complex political and cultural history (not to mention the extreme pain colonial Britain directly caused in these exact regions) was just infuriating to sit through. I understand the media have to present a balanced view and I do not doubt there was a corrupt path for Qatar to host this WC, but the level of commitment, esp from the BBC, to taint this tournament was just unprofessional, and quite honestly became tiring. The TIFO guys are extremely commendable. You have been very careful in your approach and towed the line with clarity and objectivity. Bravo 👏 more media should follow your direction

Thank you very gentlemen for all the challenging, thoughtful, exhausting, and hilarious work you provided to enrich the tournament. You all are the highlight of my days (JJ you rock!). With a jaw dropping and glorious final that was a pinnacle of our imperfect game, a stadium made out of shipping containers that likely still had migrant workers in them, and Messi’s ceremonial magic cloak (that it’s called a bisht, the most appropriate abbreviation of what it was), you just can’t make this stuff. It has been a memorable tournament with moments to cherish and the rest to wipe our collective memories of that oppressive state and Infantino’s old man orthotic shoes. I hope you all have a enjoyable and restful holiday break and don’t trip on the power cable of the giant tactics board on the way out. Cheers!

Absolutely the best World Cup final in history. Both teams completely deserved this, playing to win to the last available second! Both managers deserve praise for the courage of their game plans. Both teams played *so* well 😁 France came back *twice* in a World Cup final ffs. Just astounding. I called Argentina to win at the beginning of the tournament but my heart wanted France. Injuries to 5 major players before it even started... injuries from the 1st minutes of the tournament... virus running through the squad in the days right before the final... *and still they did not let us down!* Congratulations Argentina!

I’m 20 years old, a student and have lived in England my entire life. Was really interesting listening to the section at the end of the podcast regarding the lack of consequences and the sources of power within the World Cup and general society. What I felt mainly as I listened to that section was that while I felt that I agreed with the ideas that were discussed, I felt in no way able to relate to them. I realise this is probably because of my age. Point is, even though I’ve always considered myself relatively politically aware, I’ve also always felt an intense apathy towards the systems and people running the country, and one of the main reasons for that is the complete lack of consequences for anything anyone in positions of power do, even more so recently with the Johnson regime, for obvious reasons. The main thing I’ve found myself feeling is a sort of lack of respect for the power of any body that one might consider visible, a sense that bodies of power I might have access to are insignificant because by their nature of my possibility to access them. I don’t know if this is something that I’d specific to me of not, although I’m aware that youth apathy towards British government is nothing new. I don’t know where football fits in to this equation but I would say that I’ve never been forced to consider my relationships with it in the way that the Joe, Jon, Seb and JJ are here.

It’s not just about dropping back or not dropping back when you are ahead. One thing Liverpool was really good at for awhile under Klopp was that they would go ahead and then kind of drop back to invite pressure but then be so good on the counter attack they would score again themselves. And as the game went on and they dropped back ahead, instead of the pressure getting heavier and heavier on them the opposite happened. The other team was getting more and more desperate to score and Liverpool got more and more dangerous on the counter attack. To the point they were probably more dangerous protecting a lead than they were trying to create one... I think a lot of teams take their foot off the gas ahead and it’s like all of a sudden all the pressure is on them. When in reality they are up and there is actually more pressure on the other team. You need to take advantage of the fact that the other team needs to score and you don’t. It’s actually always something I’ve questioned about Peps teams. It’s all possession. More offensive possession and more defensive possession. So while they always have the momentum they always have the pressure. The more the other team needs to score and the less time they have to do it the more risks they’ll begin to take and the more mistakes they’ll hypothetically make and the easier it should be to punish those mistakes and score yourself. I know this is no profound revelation but the way so many of these teams seem to get so timid with a lead late... I don’t know they don’t seem to be doing it too well, imo.

Its amazing, last WC for Messi. He arrived into a Argentinian team that was packed with easily some of the best generation of argentinian players, some of them legends and key players of europes leading clubs at the time. Yet in my humble opinion if was a team full of egos, I wont bother to go into detail, but the amount of of talent and legends was just insane. At 18... he had to wait for all those guns, somehow, to fade away to get a team of realitve young palyer that grew with Messi, in order to get a team that will play with/for Messi, which was unachievable in past Argentinian teams. Of course let not forget the only 2 players that could stand at same genereation as Messi, Di Maria and Aguaero (bumer his medical condition). Plus, thank god people will speak of Messi and not of Maradona, sports in Argentina just won a great guy as an example and lead role rather than coke head like Maradona.

The world cup and the euros should always be held at one specific place. Euro 2020 had no identity because it was being held all across europe, which is nice if you get to go to a game but otherwise the tournament seems bland. Im glad that the next one is in germany.

Joe, Jon JJ, and Seb (huge congrats on winning Seb you were always my bae) you have been fantastic throughout this phantasmagorical World Cup, and don't worry, I have purchased my copy of the very nice green football book. Bye.

The discussion on the political context/state of football was really interesting. In the last couple of years or so, I have been regularly questioning why I watch football from the major leagues/competitions in Europe when I don't really have a connection to any of it. I will still watch the international tournaments (not the Club World Cups though, never the Club World Cups) because the thrills I get from those tournaments are unlike anything I get from watching club football. But I no longer see myself watching stuff like the Champions League or the Premier League. If I did continue to watch, I would guess that in a few months or so I would get jaded completely and just switch off from the sport altogether. Having lived in Finland for a while now, I have started to enjoy the domestic game here more and more. I know it's of a lower standard. I know that it has its own unique problems. But it's honest and at least it makes me feel like I have a tangible connection to the sport. And maybe that's what will keep me engaged with the sport in the long-term - average-to-decent Finnish football with an occasional dose of internationals thrown in every now and then. Either way, I'm glad that I've now got a few weeks off from watching any football. Which feels weird to say, but it's true. Thanks for all the World Cup pods!

You can’t discount the pens (especially at a World Cup final, the pressure! And Mbappe made 3) but you can’t count them as full on regular goals either. That said it’s hard to say who had the better game... Probably Mbappe. But you can’t discount the impact of Messi’s leadership and such. His impact besides just his play was monumental as well. The real leader and spiritual talisman of this team. They truly rallied around the guy and would have been deviated to let him down...

As an Argentinean, Mbappe was better but mostly because he was left alone to try to win the cup. Argentina played as team. And because of Mbappe and pretty much only Mbappe, France got to penalties. In general, taking the whole Cup I'd say Messi was better.

I didn't think Mbappes general play was anywhere near to Messis, but Argentina were the much better team so that would have been harder for him.

I'm not having any of this shade towards France's tactics. This was a Deschamps masterclass. To claw back a 2-0 deficit against an Argentina team that looked invincible is an extraordinary feat. And to do so by benching 2 of your 3 starting forwards, one of whom is France's all-time leading scorer, before halftime is even braver. I was watching Ben Foster's watch along, and everyone went from saying Deschamps should be sacked to calling him a genius. The 1 starting forward who wasn't taken off, Mbappe, went on to score a hat trick (only the second player ever in a World Cup final). He scored all 3 of France's goals and singlehandedly took the game to extra time and penalties. Deschamps leaving him on after his quiet first half very nearly won him a World Cup. The takeaway from this game isn't that France were poor; it's that Argentina were unstoppable.

Ta lads for the chat on your relationship with football. I have had the same feelings of disgust and a loss of love for the game, the Premier League in particular. People argue and discuss it now as if they're all hedge fund managers rather than fans of lads on the ptch. The thing is I tred to not watch the World Cup - and even the Premier League - but I didn't manager it. It always pulls me in - maybe because in a world with less religion and community we eeed something to belong to, a shared story, a set of beliefs represented by players and a club, or just beautiful escapism. I am lucky my club hasn't been ruined like so many others (my dad was a Man City fan and just couldn't support them once Sinawatra took over, or the new owners - and he had supported them since the 50's, it has been a sad loss for him), but ultimately even if my club was ruined like City has been, I would probably still come back. And they know that which is why they try to buy up and use our game. Ultimately though, when it comes down to it, it is a beautiful game, and the magic does always win you over. Plus all my live football is lower league (I can't afford Premier League games and my nearest club is Port Vale so it made my choice for me :)) I think we have to criticise and talk about the politics and economics of the game and we will probably have to do that more in the coming years than ever before - i hope we move to a fan owned model (which also has flaws - Bayern! - but is better) - but I think we can allow ourselves to enjoy those beautiful moments of magic as well. Paulo Coehlo said of the Catholc Church (which has some problems for some, to put it mildly) that it was merely the communal way of understanding the same universal truth that everyone else experiences through relgion. We have to come together to understand and feel that truth. And whilst some organisations within religions may try and ruin it, where we come together for the love of something we can understand that same universal truth together. So let's not lose that.

Of all the European powerhouses France does have a poor penalty history in general. They've only won two in major tournaments (1986 WC v Brazil and Euro 96 v Netherlands) and have yet to beat a South American nation on penalties since beating Brazil in 1986.
