Mesa Boogie Mark V Speaker Comparison C90 vs Celestion Vintage 30

Музыка

The Mesa/Boogie Mark V can be ordered with either the stock Celestion C90 (Black Shadow) speaker, or with a Celestion Vintage 30. These speakers have quite a difference in tone, and I get asked quite often which one is better. This video is designed to give you a side by side comparison of these two speakers so you can decide for yourself which speaker has the best voice for you.
Both amps were mic'ed the same (Shure KSM27 & EV Raven), and had the exact same signal path.

    @@jsullivan2112 ok i thought you were talking about the mark V, which the video is about.Imho , the mesa cab with v30 are more for the rectifier sound,which is basically a soldano sound and totally different than a mark, while the mark series were voiced for more "hifi" cab like the ev12ml electro voice or the c90..but it's not universal truth, just my opinion.btw a tube amp is "very" dynamic and at a band volume a 90w amp with 60w speaker...i would not trust that..

    C90 hands down. When you hear that speaker in person in a combo in a room, its souds Huge ! Fat tone with a massive amount of bottom end and it handles distortion awesomely. I put that speaker in a fender Blues Deluxe 40watt amp and all I can say is wow. Great for Rock , Blues and Hard Rock. The v30 is good for more like Metal and Hard Rock stuff, it still is a good speaker but it doesn't have that bottom end like this one

    Very cool vid, thanks for doing this. I own both. Basically use a V30 if you want a spongy, and rolled off top end. Good for vintage feel. Downside is that it lacks definition and some desirable upper frequencies. C90 much tighter, and more balanced throughout the frequency spectrum. Good for metal. And the clean sound was nice and tight. Downside a little harsh and paper-like on the top.

    Very good demo! Appreciate that you did not drag out the A/B comparisons with long solos. Easier to hear the differences with quicker back and forth comparisons. I hear the most difference in the clean comparisons with the C90 maybe having a little more edge in the high frequencies especially. It seems Boogie designed the C90 to sound like the Vintage 30 in the crunch and distortion modes, but with higher wattage capability. They must have figured that these speakers would be most often used in some level of distort mode by guitarists that also need a more robust speaker than the V30 and...... they are probably right. Good demo, and good playing. Thanks again!

    I haven’t heard many side by side comparisons such as this. Was surprised by how different they were to be honest. I have cabs loaded with each and have never had them connected to the same amp side by side. Gotta say I liked the C90 for the cleans, it was brighter, but the V30 for the dirtier sounds. It was a little darker and I found some of the dirty sounds on the C90, especially the higher frequency, to be rather shrill. Good test, one thing to make these a little better, if you could play the exact passage on each. You went from high to low a little when changing and that skued things a little. Best to have a note by note comparison. Nice, Thanks!

    Awesome video. I really liked the C90 in clean and especially crunch modes, it felt more dynamic even though the playing was the same. The top end just had a nice feel to it. Under high gain though, especially in the more rhythm style parts, I think the V30 really took it away on this one. I can see why people like to combine these into the same cabs though - they seem complimentary.

    Many people have complained about the Mark V having a harsh, ear-piercing, "ice pick" sound that they can't get away from. It's not the amp. It's the speaker. It all comes from the C90. I fought that problem for a year, and then took my Mark V head in to a store and plugged it into a 2 x12 cabinet with Vintage 30s. Bam, problem solved, best amp ever made.

    All depending on your needs. I think the C90 is perfect for down tuned players. I like how the roadking 4x12 comes with 2 v30's and 2 C90's. The v30 back is closed and the C90 side is open. The best part is the dado joined vertical partition splitting the speakers.

    I find the v30 more ice picky in every amp I've heard the two in. That mid hump in the v30 is always there. The C90 has more to treble, yes, but more high, open treble. Its like a modern 'scoopy fizzy fluff' that is immediately associated with metal or rectos when used with high gain.

  • @vaportrails7943

    @vaportrails7943

    3 жыл бұрын

    Alpha Milk Recordings It works for rhythm chugging on the low strings, to cut out the mud. But for anything above that, there is way more treble available than anyone wants. It's a complex amp. I do find the V30s smooth it out. Also, a 2x12 Rectifier cab is harder to blow out than one C90. They can handle more power. It darkens the sound a little, but in a good way. I don't know where your impression comes from, but I think the response curves on the speakers tell the real story.

    It's still very subjective. Is the amp set for the v30 speaker and the c90 speaker used the same setting? What happens if you turn it around, will everybody like the c90? I've got em' both and don't use the same setting because the v30 has a low midrange hump while the c90 is more linear in it's characteristics. They are both very good speakers and if you want more grunt go for the v30, if you want a sweeter sound go for the c90. Or why not, get the old slanted Mesa/Boogie with v30 in the bottom closed thiele and c90 in the top open back. Sounds great!

    I use the C90 in my Engl 100w combo. The V30 sounded like it does here - over bassy, no presence, muddy on crunch, great on lead notes but only for single notes as it punched a hole around the notes to separate them. But it was like cotton wool in the ears for the cleans - very dull and would not come to life until I gave it the C90. Now sorted as long as the amp remains in contact with the floor - if I raise it I lose way too much bass. But I also use it with a MB 4x12 (all C90s) 3/4 openback.

  • @haggertysmusic
    @haggertysmusic13 жыл бұрын

    @Erock09291 That's a good question. I think a Mark V in a closed back 2x12 combo format would do really well. The only reason I can think of why they don't is simply because Mark's have always been 1x12 combos. Boogie was the first company to do a high powered 1x12 amplifier and perhaps they are trying to preserve that lineage.

    That's pretty much what I thought, too. On clean the V30 seemed a bit darker and fuller sounding with more bottom end; the C90 was a bit too bright. On crunch, they were similar, but the V30 just had the extra mid-punch I love. On hi gain, the V30 was just more open sounding and would cut through the mix better, while the C90 sounded too compressed, like somebody threw a blanket over the cabinet.

    Years ago, I decided to put together a three-stage stereo rig using a Mesa F-50 narrow chassis 1x12 combo and a Mesa F-30 1x12 combo. The F-50 came stock with a Black Shadow 90, and the F-30 came stock with a Vintage 30, and I didn't really have any way of testing them beforehand. I decided to go with the Vintage 30, since they seemed much more popular at the time, and ordered a Vintage 30 from Mesa (Mesa's version of the Vintage 30 is a 70 W driver, as compared to the standard Vintage 30, which is rated at 60 W. I am assuming the Vintage 30 being compared here is from Mesa.) I am actually surprised to note in this video that the Black Shadow 90 is *dramatically brighter* than the Vintage 30, to the point of being annoying to my ears. Of course, you can compensate for this with the amp's EQ, to a certain extent, but just based on this video, I'd choose the Vintage 30 every time over the Black Shadow 90, unless the difference in power handling was a factor. With my F-50, that's not the case.

  • @andylaughs
    @andylaughs13 жыл бұрын

    Obviously the Vin 30 sounds better here ... I think I can get close keeping the presence settings pretty tame and dialing out the fizz with the graphic eq, though, on my Mark V. I'm sure the decision to go with the C90 had more to do with power handling than tonal characteristics. I take the best of both worlds: I plug my combo into an Emperor 412 with Vin 30s and plug the cab and the internal C 90 speaker into the 4 ohm outputs for a "5/8 stack."

That 2x12 cabinet works very well with all Mark series amps. I also tested Mesa oversized closed backed 4x12 cabinet with V30 speakers. I chose that 2x12 cabinet. When I needed second 2x12 Mesa cabinet, I could not find one. But then I found Mesa Three Quarter 4x12 cabinet with C90 speakers and in my opinion that was the best for Mark V. Mesa Three Quarter 4x12 cabinet is darker than vertical Mesa 2x12 metal grille cabinet. I use vertical Mesa 2x12 metal grille cabinet with my late 80's Sundown A50 head.

    Hey Don! Two questions: what is the weight difference of the amp with the two speakers? Have you played a Strat through the two speakers? I have the C90 and my Strat seems very brittle on the high end and there doesn't seem to be enough low end. And yes, I've reduced the treble and increased the bass but still it doesn't sound great like I think it should. In your vid, I prefer the warmer, fatter V30. Oh oh, another queston: are there other speakers that sound even better in the combo?

    Tech question: Do you play to a click or do you line up the two videos in Pro Tools? Or is it that you can just play it the exactly the same each time? I assume you play all the stuff, then swap speakers, amps, etc., then play it all again. Btw, I've watched every one of your videos and they kick ass!

    I know this is an old post but the settings on the V30 differ from the settings on the V90...The V30 Effects loop is lit, while the EQ is Off, aswell the Solo-Output settings differ, and there is a slight difference on master (with mesa slight differences can offer huge changes ) ... The V90, The EQ seems lit...Kinda hard to tell though...But, I zoomed in to check simply because of a few comments I read on this post, where others were claiming their results were on the contrary.

    Please answer this. Is the only difference the speakers, or are there any more differences between the two models such as other power-amp stage or any other differences in design for the V30? I currently have a Mark V combo with C90:s, but I would like to try putting V30:s in it. Is there anything I must think about before doing so, or is it just straight forward plug and play?

    @fluff191 Do you think that video would have to have the speakers in a 4x12 format? I don't have any with C90's in stock, but I may be able to swap one.

    The V30's are wonderful but if you play shows where you need volume you better have a 4x12 config. I had a 2x12 with actually with (1) V30 and (1) Greenback made by Bognar and ended up blowing them and wasn't all that loud. Lesson learned, use the C90's in a 2x12 cabinet if you play with a live drummer V30's in a 4x12.

    @Derrick7777777 The C90 is brighter for sure. One thing I don't know if you can really hear in the video... while playing on the clean channel, I could "FEEL" that vintage 30... Much more bottom end. I love the mids in the vintage 30, they are so detailed and complex. I love the vintage 30 all the way!

    @usalespaul59 Mesa will ship the amp with a single V30 and still cover the speaker under factory warranty. The V30 seems to be rated conservatively, and we have shipped numerous Mark V V30 combos and have not had one issue or warranty claim. If you are truly needing to crank 90 watts, then a combo is probably not the best amp for you, and you would likely prefer the added volume and push of a 4x12.
