Mesa Celestion Black Shadow vs Marshall Celestion Vintage 30 Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Roadster
Музыка
Here is my comparition of two excellent speakers: 1988 Marshall Celestion Vintage 30 (444 cone) and 2000 Mesa Boogie Celestion Black Shadow C90 (777 cone) - Celestion G12-80 equivalent. Speakers are in one 2x12 closed back cabinet. All channels of Mesa Boogie Roadster used, some fx from G-Major 2 and some stompboxes (TS, comp, OD) in front of the amp engaged. Shure SM57 used to capture tone of both speakers. Both mics placed more - less between center and the edge of dust caps, about 1,5 cm from grill.

I have both. I sent a message to Celestion to see if the “Vintage” is compatible with a Vintage 30 and they said yes definitely-but they’re still not the same speaker-I guess there’s small differences. I was told the Black Shadow’s are derivative of the old G12-80’s They’re a lot different than the Vintage I’m hearing in this video. They have a fatter more dull sound but are good on Fender style amps for adding more bass and cutting the treble a little. I have two Black Shadows just like these in small Thiel designed cabinets (TL cabs) in order to add fatness and bigness to my Orange Crush 35RT.
I'm actually combining (for years now) a rectoverb 25 combo (with Fillmore speaker, open back) and a Mesa extension cab (with c90, closed back). Sounds fenomenal, I will never change.
Bought a Rivera M 100 with a Black Shadow in it. I pick it up tomorrow. CAN'T WAIT.
this video helped me decide! on the choice of either the v30 or c90, i choose....BOTH. that blend is dope thought out. the v30's sounded better for clean and crunch and obviously marshally mid range high gain stuff. c90's REALLY deliver with that modern sound scooped, which mesa is obviously. both were fabulous for lead tones. i'm going to blend both in a 2x12. thank you this was awesome. the choice is harder if you're going with a 1x12. if you're in a cover band, you want the v30's for classic rock up through grunge. everything past grunge that isn't retro, go for the c90. if you're doing both, it sounds like, you want both lol. again, thanks
Great sounds clips! Nice comparison. Why did you film this during an earthquake? Really annoying.

It`s alright. Mesa with Celestion are made to shake your foundations ;)
Replaced speaker in my fender pro reverb with a black shadow…it’s how I imagined it should of sounded in the first place, “pro”……black shadows are voiced for open back cabs but would like to replace the speakers in my 2x12 Marshall origins closed back cab (celestions 70/80’s) to see if that sounds great too…😎✌🏻
Nice comparison video - the G12 seemed to tighten up the lower mids from the Roadster which was a cool combination. Always have liked the low end bloom of the C90 - but can be too much for some folks. Again great work!

@SpearheadStudios You’re right about the lows in the Black Shadow. I thought I’d try one in my late 90’s Peavey red stripe Bandit which has a larger combo cabinet and it was so bassy that it was unusable. Put Peavey’s stock Sheffield speaker back in which has more of a Vintage 30 sound anyway and is much better.
Really nice comparison. Video is nauseating.
The C90 sounds smoother, but both still sound like a Recto.
Insane!!! I use both!!! V30 2x12 16 ohm each individually connected in stereo with helix/ax8 processors powered with hotone loudster each speaker. Closed back pine cab painted with polyurethane. V30 at 4 ohm (2 8ohm parallel) sounds too raw, that's why I love the soft response at 16 ohm individually. But c90 in a small 4x12 mdf cab hifi tone (4 8ohm) as well in stereo connected the same in individual hotone loudster poweramp serial wiring to get them in 16 ohm give me the sweetspot you hear of a mesa recto high gain you'd expect from a high end digital processor.

Did you combine with greenback?

@@jalaskabtu for what I've tried, combining speakers is a little messy, but it works fine with 2x12 open back cabs. V30+75 is such a great combination. I've seen great tones like this: v30+greenback v30+black shadow v30+100k. But I prefer straight 4x12 cabs with the same speaker model. You have a plentiful tone with a lot of punch and the cab resonates very balanced. Angled cabs provide a different effect and projection.

Celestion Speakers are the best. Also have V30's in my Mesa Recto cab and they sound great, too.
I think they both sound good, but the C90 wins by a bit because it's smoother. Blended, these would probably sound fantastic.
I am considering throwing two of these bad boys in a Marshall cab with eminence CV-75s. I play metal so I’m hoping I made the right choice. I want something that will cut in the mix. I understand that most of the time what sounds good alone doesn’t always sound good in the mix and can be drowned out
This looks like it was filmed in a moving car.
Nice comparation
I like the C90 more.
I just had epilepsy fit and i don't recall ever being diagnosed.
In the totally clean area g12 is smoother , BS has more highs imo But both are great speakers
V30 is the standard. Mesa has nice amp cabs
nice quality
The C90 actually has a nice bounce to it and believe it or not I'm actually surprised but the black shadow Electro-Voice actually has a little bounce to it not as biting as the other ones I'm very I'm very very surprised I thought it would have been more the case with with the celestions girly they all sound very good but as you go down the line it gets a little bit bouncy or in deeper it's it's much its it has a deeper sound to it but yes I do think that the C90 probably is the best one
Such a shame the latest Chinese versions really managed to fuck it up. Thank fuck for Marshall & Mesa keeping the faith!, I like The Marshall's best, good thing too as I cant find the Mesa beasts anywhere!.

These are old speakers. It's hard to get good sounding speaker from recent production.

@@piotrczernikiewicz Its also hard to get good production out of recent production lol.. I managed to track down the Marshall's through a loophole.. you can't purchase Marshall or Mesa celestions in a store.. was a mission to hunt down.. but it can be done, the secret is that Marshall or Mesa will only replace your Marshall or Mesa speakers if you already have a Marshall or Mesa cab.. and only cab models which had these celestions originally fitted from factory.. just have to send the supplier a pic of your or any picture of cab's details I just sent any pic I found online, got 4 brand spanking new Marshall Celestions ordered by supplier from Marshall..

Although the other celestions are not bad either not bad either
Dude, thanks for the video. I have a mc90 blackshadow, love the sweet clean sound and the fact that this speaker has no bee sound ehhehhe right? I think its great with clean and drive. I have a g75 too, selling it to buy another shadow :)

I think those old speakers are perfectly balanced and have really full tone. I prefer mix of 2 speakers with SM57 on one speaker and AKG Perception 200 on another.
