Full highlights from the qualifying stages of the men's 110m hurdles event from the Olympic Park at the London 2012 Olympic Games (7 August 2012).
Since 1896, athletics has been on the programme of each edition of the Games of the Olympiad. Its presence on the Games programme has allowed its popularity to increase across the world. This popularity was also strengthened by the creation of the IAAF in 1912. Women's events appeared for the first time at the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam, while the men's programme was standardised as of the 1932 Games in Los Angeles. Although at the beginning women were authorised to participate in only some events, today their programme is almost identical to that of the men.

It's so sad to see such a great athlete like Liu Xiang retiring from the sport, i hope he does look back on his career proudly because he's achieved everything there is to achieve in this event, won the olympic gold, won the world championship gold, broke the world record in the past, broke the olympic record in 2004 which still stands to this day, has the distinction of being the first asian to win an olympic gold medal in track and field breaking the stereotype about asians not being able to run fast, he's definitely a once in a generation kind of athlete, he's cemented his legacy and will always be remembered as a hurdling legend along with greats like Allen Johnson and Collin Jackson, Dayron Robles and Aries Meritt will also be remembered as greats when they retire.

Liu was an amazing and also inspiring athlete, I was willing him to win this event after the disappointment of the Beijing games for him, I remember him in Athens and his amazing gold medal in 12.95 he is the most naturally gifted hurdler since Colin Jackson, I have always thought that Jackson considering he was only 5ft 10 tall was an exceptional athlete and if he had of been taller he could of ran 12.75 as he was so gifted over the hurdles of course his height may of meant his speed was not so good so it is an unknowable but even so both of them were two of the all time greats over this event.

they didn't make him walk to the other end at all, he did it by choice, they had a wheelchair waiting for him at the starting end, only Liu wanted to make it to the last hurdle, which he did, and by then it was easier for him to limp to the finish end, rather than go back to the start

Seriously liu’s team has done a fabulous job in keeping the man’s legacy for the rest of his life. He will forever be remembered as the undisputed no1 track and field superstar in China. The absolute dominance runners with skill and speed. Imagine if he insisted to compete in Beijing and London with that below average form and unable to get the second medal, some of those 1b Chinese will definitely have doubt about his actual ability wondering whether he won in Athens by luck.

The commentator is clueless lol. The reason why Liu's lead leg crashed into the hurdle was because his other leg achilles went out which is why he got no height in the jump attempt and his lead leg was so low it wasn't even close to clearing the hurdle. Dang. If not for injuries, Liu would have gold in 2008 and 2012 to go along with his 2004 gold....he was head and shoulders faster than everyone.

He chose to do it himself because he wanted to at least make it to the end himself. They offered him a wheelchair but he refused it so he could get there on his own. It had nothing to do with the officials. Get your facts right before spouting on the internet.
