Nah, you don't need bikini top or shell bra to be a mermaid. You can wear any top that matches your tail, crop tops, tankini, longline balconette bra, are all very acceptable. If you can sew, a matching one piece swimsuit will give you the classic vintage mermaid look where the scales go all the way up to the bust/shoulders. Long hair is a stereotype. I have short hair and have mermaided since 2014 and have always made my own matching tail and swimsuit. It doesn't matter what swimsuit you have, kids only see the tail part of your body and will still call you a mermaid. I have worn pink swimsuit with black tail and I was still called, "Mermaid".
