Merle Haggard truly deserved the honor. Just finished playing one of his CD/DVD collections. My favorite is "Runnin' Kind/Lonesome Fugitive. God bless his soul.

Cool thing about Merle, if he hadn't become an international Country music superstar, he would have just went ahead and been . . . Merle Haggard. The great ones are great not because of what they do but because of who they are.

She's doing the Lord's work here - and Gram Parsons's. Indirectly honoring her old mentor once again, GP hugely admired Merle H and his Bakersfield outlaw peers (Buck Owens, Don Rich etc). If Gram were around, he'd be doing the honors; Emmylou always in his stead.

I don't believe Merle even noticed the extended hand; he was obviously having an overwhelming emotional moment. As the other commenter mentioned he very quickly went back and shook all the guys' hands.
