I worked as an extra on the 'Good the Bad and the Ugly' in Spain in 1966. Of the three main actors, Eastwood, Wallach and Van Cleef. Lee Van Cleef treated us extras the best. Going as far as inviting a few of us to his house for a barbeque.

I was in so Cal working as a stockman for Sav-on Drug Stores when Van Cleef came in to buy some Toilet paper. Asking him if he was an actor his response was "hell yes" he autographed a piece of paper for me. I was VERY impressed with him he was a great guy even in real life.

Imagine this I was born in 1951 and the first time I saw this man in a movie I fell in love with him. Everybody said how could you he wasn't handsome but there was something about his face and his eyes that captured my attention. I knew he was an old man compared to my age but it didn't matter. I must have been around 15 years old. The movie was High Noon. Since then I have never been attracted to men who were considered handsome or as I would say pretty. Now I'm ten years older than he was when he died. And when he did, I cried. Never ever had I cried for a movie star before or after. Crazy I know. To this day, I watch his movies as often as I can over and over again. And anything else I can find him starring in. Despite all the bad guys he played, I didn't get shivers down my spine because I had imagined he would have a soft spot for me. I don't know if anyone else has this mental issue. But I do know if you watch enough of the movies a person makes and the TV shows he is in, you can conjure up in your mind the perfect man of your dreams.

This man was greater than Holywood. Outstanding actor and human being cinema gave us the opportunity to meet this man. The Spaghetti Westerns were a fantastic insight into American history in the form of parody that could only be observed by an outsider in the form of a European director. Lee Van Cleef could hold an audience without even speaking, a quality particular in Sergio Leone films that involved epic storylines that lacked major rhetoric and left the audience to work out their own interpretation. Whenever Van Cleef appeared in a film it had a following simply by his inclusion in the cast. A tragic loss at such a young age we can only speculate what movies he could have made had he lived longer. One thing that is for sure is that they would have been excellent films and I feel he would have had a huge input into their direction. Thank you for making this piece about him. 🙂👍

Definitely one of my fav actors back in the day Clint as well of course. Sad to find out he died of the same smoking affliction that's killing me now but as smokers we all know the dangers. Not sure how many times I've seen the good the bad and the ugly but would happily watch it again as he's brilliant in that. A masterpiece of a film and imho not a boring bit in it. RIP Lee.
