I enjoy the live concerts so much more than the albums. They are more expressive and each song seems to come alive again a little differently. His talent is in his phrasing, and the use of his voice as expression of the music. Nobody does it better, in my opinion. He left so much great music, a poet of our day. The Country Blues was his element. He got better and better with age.

Every songwriter should aspire to be able to write like Merle Haggard. He is the journalist among the lyricists: putting you directly into the scenery, every line as if taken from the answers in an interview about a specific situation in one's life. This is not even mentioning his incredible craftmanship as a musician; what a guitarist, what a band leader!

@@loggerjohn01 Not correct. Willie had only the line "Looking for a place to fall apart" and he presented that to Merle and Merle's longtime friend and band member, Freddy Powers. And Merle and Freddy took that one and only line (and indeed the title of the song) and wrote the song. All three - Merle, Freddy, and Willie - are credited with writing it, but the overwhelming, vast majority of the song was written by Merle and Freddy.

Moma, loved Merle ❤ When I was a little girl, She said I just want," to see him in person. We would drive Down Town Detroit. After Dad got out, Mom would turn WEXL Radio on, loud 25 miles back home. She loved ❤ Merle Haggard 's Singing. We'll Mama's gone , I have great memories of mom trying to sing, with him, those were some of my favorite moments ❤

Personally I think Waylon is the greatest but I'd never argue that anyone who thinks Merle is the best is wrong..thank god they made all the great music they've left behind for us..I love Haggard and his song writing skills were truly amazing... Take care

Oh my goodness, been a fan since Silver Wings did things to my heart. I had no idea Merle produced these mag children with his awesome talent. AWESOMENESS. THANK YOU LORD. WE 're blessed to have these talented children

Read biography about Merle. Bad time for him. When it ended between him and Leona Bonnie told him she was to marry Fred. Apparently he was unapproachable for days and over indulged in drugs. Thank goodness he got through and he got Bonnie back singing with him.
