Marty and The Superlatives open with 'The Runnin' Kind' - Merle Haggard sings 'Always Pretty' - Connie Smith sings 'You Don't Have Very Far To Go' - At Marty's request, Merle does an impression of Bob Wills introducing Lefty Frizzell, then sings a bit of 'Always Late', as Frizzell - Merle sings 'TB Blues', with an assist from Marty - Leroy Troy sings Merle's composition: 'The Old Man From The Mountain', with an assist from Harry Stinson - Connie Smith sings this week's inspirational number: 'Jesus Take A Hold' - Merle closes with his classic: 'Workin' Man Blues'.
Merle Ronald Haggard (April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016) was an American country singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler.
Haggard was born in Oildale, California, during the Great Depression. His childhood was troubled after the death of his father, and he was incarcerated several times in his youth. After being released from San Quentin State Prison in 1960, he managed to turn his life around and launch a successful country music career. He gained popularity with his songs about the working class that occasionally contained themes contrary to the prevailing anti-Vietnam War sentiment of much popular music of the time. Between the 1960s and the 1980s, he had 38 number-one hits on the US country charts, several of which also made the Billboard all-genre singles chart. Haggard continued to release successful albums into the 2000s.
He received many honors and awards for his music, including a Kennedy Center Honor (2010), a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2006), a BMI Icon Award (2006), and induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1977), Country Music Hall of Fame (1994) and Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame (1997). He died on April 6, 2016 - his 79th birthday - at his ranch in Shasta County, California, having recently suffered from double pneumonia.

Ole merle was the man,one of the men I would loved to have met, the real poet of country music, ass kicking music, ALWAYS, but was always close to his own heart, and he had lived it,a history book if you would open the book, fly on merle,I still listen to the king of country music today, only music that still makes sense today

Like George Jones (and a few others) Merle Haggard cut his on trail. Which made them among the greatest country "Gems" of all time. May Jesus rest their precious souls. For it will never be again. Sad but true; for all we have now mostly is what Ray Price said just before he died, "Why don't they just call it R & R, because that is all it is!". Many thanks to this videographer that brings us these awesome treasures. May Jesus bless you for sharing these "golden platters" with us, kind Sir.

Merle was not only the best of the best. He could do impersonations. Marty called him a mockingbird I call him a parrot 🦜. A parrot especially African Grey's only have to hear something one time and they own it. That's how Merle was.

2010 and I was happy to be there. I sat right across from Hank Cochran and in front of me sat Les Leverett and his wife. Treasured moment. Do you know how to download a video from YT?
