I played this every night for my dying mother in Nov 2020; she had vascular dementia and was lost to us mentally in her final days. Merle singing this brought her back to us for brief moments each time. For that Merle, you deserve eternal love and respect. RIP to mam n Merle....2 of the greatest people of the 20th century.

What a blessing and precious memories. I turned a young 60 in June of last year (soon to be 61). When I was living in my home town in my late teens and early twenties, I was listening to the greatest country music ever. I had a crush on this ruggedly handsome man, too. LOL I have many of his CD's in my collection among other country greats. I've been in Atlanta for almost 30 years, and have a few co-workers who recognize the best of the best. For those who throw stones at Merle Haggard's mistakes, read his story on Wikipedia. He didn't have a perfect life, and furthermore, in 1972, he received an official pardon from future President Regan, who was then Governor of California and released from prison with all past crimes erased, some of which were not of his own individual involvement.

As a kid, my Dad, a Marine in Korean War loved Merle! Used to play his records at night and would sit on back porch and sing with him, while he drank a beer and Mom cooked dinner! I grew up loving Merle! Still do! God bless him and his sons!

Merle had a way of penning words plus singing them that could touch those ole heart strings. .. on certain songs, like no one else..

Many years ago I wouldnt listen to Merle Haggard because ,being a hippie of the 1960’s , I was offended by the lyrics to Okie from Muskogee. Fast forward 40 years- and thanks to KZread , I now realize just how remarkable a lyricist, guitar player, and singer he truly was. Everytime I hear this song, it brings tears to my eyes. And watching and listening to him over the years, I agree with one of the posters that he peaked in his later years. Approaching 70 myself, there is a wisdom and perspective that comes with age. Thats why I have grown to love Merle and much of country music which i scorned in my youth.

I think it strikes home the way it does because we all of us are under our own sentence of death, many of us haven't been given a date, and the older we get, the more we miss the more innocent days long gone by, and the warm comfort they give us. Sadly, I know this is not completely true for some, but I can only speak from what I feel.

@Carlos Soto-Gomez...I'm not a Chaplain but I worked as a Rehab Therapist with 3-18 Children and Adolescents for a big part of my life and sometimes The Doctors would treat some as prisoners unjustly I wasn't suppose to bring Faith into my sessions but when the time was appropriate I would slip it in and coming home from the military in late dec 67 several of my good friends who didn't serve got in some pickels (Trouble) and I went to visit them at different units at Huntsville in the 70s and it was real so Mr. Merle can bring a quick group of Tears fast...Goodness Grace Happiness and good Health to all people of all Lands I believe he was Singing to all of us with our so many situations in Life ..Sing ba k home hits home everytime and now being 72 it even means more every time ! Merle and my Mom shared time together at the end of their lives. She and he were at the same mortuary sadly....my Mom would of thought that was cool as an alive person.Some how it helped knowing they were together in some way....ugh...hardest thing I did was saying good bye to the last of my immediate family. Rest easy Mama enjoy the music in the heavens....

This is country music at its finest. I love this rendition of Merle's song He seems to have slowed the tempo down just a little. You get to hear all the great background music and it's just beautiful. And then you get to hear Merle do his guitar picking right at the right time. Just another one of his great songs!

Slowing the tempo gives this lovely song the pathos it deserves. I came to appreciate Merle relatively late, as I am more a folk and folk-rock fan. When I first heard him sing "Misery and Gin" I was shocked at the silkiness of his voice. He can sing ballads with the best - with Sinatra, Bennett, etc. This is my favorite, along with "Think About a Lullaby."

I've worked damned near 38 years being the man on the other side of the bars. Merle Haggard was the Man.

This man was one of the greatest singer/songwriters in this country. The real deal through and through. I still get choked up hearing his beautiful voice. Merle was very down to earth and never thought he was better than anyone else. A salt of the earth soul. May he be resting peacefully and watching over his loved ones ❤️🙏🎶🎤🎸🇺🇸

What a legend! He truly was one of the last of the breed. RIP Merle.

My first 8 track, his greatest hits, kept me from a lot of trouble back in the day! I was around 14 years old. Unmatched by many, for sure! I’m 68 now. He still sounds as good today! RIP Merle ❤

and the lyrics are awful. A criminal is walking to death row, but he tries to find peace in his own death, right before he dies. He realizes in the last minutes how his life should have and could have been different! so sad. So awful. But the criminal made his choice. Now its death row. Wonderful rendition, love Merle so much.

Sierra Vista, AZ - the summer of 2003 I tossed MH a tall boy Bud at the end of his concert. He picked it up, popped the top, said thanks and walked off stage. What a great memory!

This is by far the most wonderful performance of this song! Timeless !

There'll never be anyone that will compare to Merle Haggard.

I’m so glad my son played this song for me! God I love this version, so good!

I was privileged to meet this epic man one time at a concert in Wichita Falls Texas. My brother in law was dating a lady that was a promoter producer in North Texas. I was recruited as part of the security team. He was one of a kind and a legend then and now. His music will forever be remembered as the common mans. It is a true question, “Who’s gonna fill their shoes”.

Reminds me of growing up in Mommie & daddys house every Saturday night 💗

I listened to Merle Haggard since the late sixties. He was one of a kind. When he was made they broke the mold. Truly a legend that can't be duplicated.

I love this song, the way Merle sings it and his tone on that signature Telecaster is amazing.

I am ashamed that I didn't really appreciate his music when he was with us. I have gotten much wiser with the years. He wrote from the heart, and his brand of "country" music resonates with the best of American folk tradition. This will be honored American music forever.

I like folk music of many nationalities, not just American. But I do like country that isn't cheesy. It has to be real. This Bakersfield boy was the real deal.

Artists like Merle, George, Waylon, Johnny... they just never die. The music of those guys will live forever as long as old farts like me keep them alive in our minds and on our turntables

Exactly I'm 27 and grew up with this music. Even met my girlfriend while we danced to country music almost 7 years ago I was looked at funny because here in the Netherlands this was not "hip"

As Merle Haggard’s body aged his voice never seemed to. What an absolute treasure he was.

This song reminds me of my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost battling cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, life could be so unfair most times but sometimes I wonder why bad things always happen to good people,

I would say Merle, this song, among all his others kept me out of prison! This man is one of the greatest!❤

An aged Merle still killin it on vocals and lead guitar....whew...had a tear in my eye while I was singing along.

l am a Korean. But I love this song "Sing Me Back Home" i usaiy have heard this song. Merle in this song make me cry every time. Because of this sentence " sing me back hone before I die" in this song. Tkank you Merle Haggard and Ambassador Television. January 2020.

This and other albums played in our livingroom every Sunday on the turntable when I was just a young child. This still pulls at my heartstrings like it used to. Such a wonderful part of our lives and he is so full of soul! Love you Merle Haggard

It will be requested at my funeral. Talk about tears. I will miss MH .

These great songs would play thru my childhood home. Now they echo thru my memory and remind me of a better time and place.

My Dad was a country music singer he sang this a lot . He loved Merle , Gene Watson, George Jones the Possum, & of course Hank Willams Sr.

I want this song played in the Church at my funeral. And I want Merle's introduction saying " Here's one for all the ex-convicts in the house " included 😁

You can hear Merle lived this song in his voice. Beautiful!

Merle could do it all. His voice control was amazing. No one could do it like Merle.

Turn back the years man that just hits you when he sings that line.

Merle that's why Merle is him did you see all them band mates look at him when Merle played the guitar. You wish some people lived forever Merle one of those guys. Rip Merle. He's up in the gods angel choir now.

He forgot the lyrics of the first verse, but kept on going like the pro he was ! 🎉 Such an awesome performer ! 🕊 🎶

Lotta soul in this song cuz it’s a tribute to a man Merle met at the lowest point in both of their lives. Only a true artist could manufacture something this soul wrenching. High praise for a masterwork by the great Merle Haggard❤
