That looks like a 1971 four cyl 50 hp. Loved that sound. My dad had a two cyl 40 on a small 16 ft boat. It did 30 knots but I tried to push him to a 50hp, he refused.

I just bought a 1988 Bass tracker boat with this engine on it. Not running right now, going to start the work soon. It says Classic Fifty in the decal on the engine but also says 45 HP, so I am thinking its 45 HP but referred to a model (at the time) which would have been familiar to classic boat owners as the "Classic Fifty" so they knew what they were getting.

I think the way hp was measured changed from powerhead hp to hp delivered on to the prop shaft so the same engine was sold before as 50hp but measured from the prop shaft the hp was 45hp.

the 44 inch Block was introduced in the late 509s and was used into the 90s. It ranged in HP from 35 thru 50, depending on Carbs, Reeds, Porting, and Rating Method.

Hello!! I just bought the 40HP same line engine. I m in Greece . The Mercury agent in our country told me though that I cannot find most basic spare parts. Do you have any idea where I can ask for spare parts? Thanks . Elias
