1989 45 hp Mercury - Carb Clean & Install - Part 3

Ойын-сауық

This 45 hp Mercury would idle ok but when you put her into forward she would stall. Also the lower carb would not respond to any air mixture screw adjustments. So I felt it needed both its carbs cleaned.
After the cleaning she fired right up but I’m still having issues with cooling. The tell tale is still very hot and I need to correct this. Stay tuned for part 4 to find out why and how I corrected the problem.

It sounds like you didn't clean the idle circuits out well on the carb clean. I would take it apart again and use a small wire to make sure you ream them out. Also have you done a compression test? No amount of tuning will help if the compression is low and uneven between cylinders.

I have this same exact motor. Mine idles fine, shifts fine into gear, but as soon as I get it into the lake I can’t get top end out of it. I just got it out of the shop and this was the first time I ran it today. I’ve had the carbs cleaned, replaced the motor mounts. Installed a new fuel line and hose, and I’m not sure where to go from here. My mechanic suggested running yamalube through it and I hope that works. Would you have any tips or suggestions? I’d greatly appreciate it

Did your mechanic check compression? If the rings are worn or stuck this might be the problem. The yamalube might help loosen the rings. Did your mechanic do a link & Sync?

@@LivetofishOutboardRepair I honestly don’t know if he did or not. I’m not very mechanically inclined, he said there was a little bit of carbon buildup and just to run some yamalube through a tank of fuel. I can get it a little past half throttle just fine but anything past that she bogs down. I’ve seen so many things that it could be and I guess I’m just a little overwhelmed and not enough money in the wallet

I know it can be frustrating but really is just a process of elimination. The first things I check are compression and spark then fuel delivery and carbs. Full throttle issues could be ignition related coils, trigger, Stator, switchbox. Your mechanic should have checked these things to diagnose the problem. If he did and all was ok then he might be right about the carbon buildup.

I have a 1989 Mariner 45 hp. It idles and go on slow speed but when you do full throttle the power is like 75% and then dies in about 45 seconds. • @LivetofishOutboardRepair

Tobias Funke …. Your high speed jet in the carb might be restricted and needs cleaned. If it’s hard starting then the idle circuits in the carb may also be dirty. Also does the power return when you pump the primer bulb at WOT? If so then your mechanic may be wrong about the fuel pump.

That’s ok because you know that motor will probably grenade itself at some point. The motor I was working on was for a customer. He wanted me to get it running and sell it but I told him the motor was going to leave someone stranded on the lake. I convinced him to sell the motor for parts and he would still make money. He agreed 🙂

@@markmorgan1116 if water is leaking out the spark plug hole, I believe you have a rusted out block or it might just be the water jacket cover gasket is compromised. I would first do a compression test and see if the motor is viable. If the compression is good then move forward to see if the water cover gasket is bad. Outboard engine noise is hard to diagnose.
