Mercedes W13 - Aerodynamics Analysis and Initial Thoughts

We're on home territory here, but doesn't mean I can't still break down all the details of the Mercedes W13! At first glance many people have been uninspired by the more or less carryover of the rear bodywork, however this car is all about the details.

@@lewisredwood06 Not really and doubtful. This is way too nerdy and technical for most people. The target audience is a small percentage of motor sport followers. @@ChrispyNut You are right with what you say about that audience, but I see it as wider than just that. I also consider this channel appealing to engineers and people who appreciate complex engineering (why i started watching) and also anyone who follows motorsport but doesn't really understand the intricacies of aerodynamics (an awful lot of people). I'm not looking for a battle in the comments section, your viewpoint is valid and I respect it.
It really feels like while Ferrari has tried to innovate with an extreme and very out-there interpretation of the rules, Mercedes decided to adapt and perfect a more conventional and already proven concept. I don't know about the actual racing, but from an engineeristic point of view this is one of the most exciting seasons in decades, F1 teams truly never fail to amaze me.

@@KevinJDildonik Could be, but they also might have smashed it out of the park, we literally have zero way of knowing yet. If you remember the last big rule change in 2017 Ferrari was by far the most innovative on the grid, and went from a winless season straight to challenging for the title. They've been so conservative after 2017-18 that it's really exciting to see them try something so extreme for once. And of course the Merc being competitive is a safe bet, yes, but we really can't know for sure until after Bahrain. I'm not trying to jinx them, but If you saw the 2005 Ferrari before the season started you'd swear it would dominate just like its predecessors, cause why wouldn't it? And to top it all off we're still yet to see whatever monster Newey's genius has birthed in its full (presumed) glory. I'm just hoping for a close fight at the top, and if Ferrari is part of that then it would make it that much better.

@@mesterorange8181 While i wouldn't call the F-14T extreme (certainly not in the same way as the F1-75 and not any more than the W05) that car's main problem was the PU, which was both heavy and _severly_ underpowered, everything else was just a concequence. Don't get me wrong, the Merc was better overall, but switch the PUs and it would've surely struggled to win races. Such an interesting video. Thank you so much. Just a small thing - when you draw over elements of the car, it can sometimes be hard to then remember exactly what I’m looking at as it is covered. I wonder if a brush that was more of a highlight (70%-80% opacity) rather than a solid brush (100% opacity) might help to be able to understand the intricacies of what you are talking about better. Might just be me who is having trouble here but thought I’d mention it. Thanks again

I was about to suggest something similar, because I also feel that at the end of the explanation the picture is hidden under a lot of lines so I can’t see anymore the part. Wow this is just amazing content. It's what I've been looking for on youtube and elsewhere for so long, with very little success. I'm so sick of having to settle for channels like The Race and Autosport for analysis of these cars. They may have some talented journalists, but their technical analysis is always incredibly superficial. And despite the fact that both also have capable technical experts who could actually explain the concepts, they always keep those people hidden from view. Anyway rant over, thanks so much for all the work you put in to this, and for sharing your knowledge with us!
99% of the total views on this video must be Adrian Newey! In all seriousness your channel is fantastic.
engineers: "with these restrictive rules, all cars will look the same and you can only see marginal differences." expectation: "the top teams will be severely restricted in their developments by the budget cap and cfd time." reality: "by far the most different and complex cars with many technical refinements of the last decades!" I really like these new rules :D
By far the best technical explanation and the best channel

Great detail on all of your videos. Your channel has been my "go to" for this season. Question on the Merc: Could the waving floor be feed but the outmost tunnel be creating an amplifies vortex? My thought is air flows from the outmost smaller inlet in creates high and low pressure to create vortices and out washes. The first small wave creates a small vortex and the following waves create a slightingly stronger/larger vortex. This can do three things: 1) increase downforce toward the front of the car, 2) seal the floor and 3) create a wake in front of the rear wheels. Just a thought. Regardless, either all teams are going to adopt or it will disappear from the W13 before the second race.
HI, great series! Thanks for your enlightening comments. I wonder if the device you spotted on the rear end of the floor, couldn’t be a tyre temp sensor. Just a thought. What do you think?
Another great video, thank you for you time. Do you have any plans to release a comparison video running through points of similarity and difference between the cars when they've all been launched? I'd be very interested to see that.

Kyle, great series of videos on the new crop of F1 cars! Could you do something about vortices, explaining why teams generate them, why they direct them where they do, and what the effects are?
