Wow that baritone engine sound from the Mercedes is just so good

as a mercedes fan i cannot fucking stand those SL tail lights. as for the front end, it also looks less appealing than before.

carlos ortiz S 65 means more power and more expensive ! a regular s class ( S400) has about 300 horsepower while the s65 600 plus but i might be wrong on that haha

Excellent test of high performance drivers cars. No music, no juvenile wam bam editing. No droning on about the switches or cup holders or whatever. Just straight into it. How well do they drive. I have an E231 SL500. I love driving it it.

0-60 in the M6 is not 5.2 seconds, its 4.0-4.5

ant a yes i have to admit the GTR is definitely a beast and offers you a performance and maybe a handling of a supercar like its German , Italian Compatriots but half the price ! But if i were a millionaire, i would easily go for an r8 , mercedes sls , ferrari , lambo , aston martin , maserati , bentley, rolls royce over the gtr ! but if i wasn't a millionaire but have a decent amount of money in my bank, then i would go for the GTR :)

lolNEED55 same but, being a millionaire opens up new doors.. it's no longer just cars but boats and planes and other things driving very fast is dangerous but, in the air there's really no limit other than what you can take given the right acrobatic aircraft otherwise the wings would rip off

You cant really compare the two because the m6 has 4 seat and the sl63 has two and is also lighter. I think its kinda sad that the sl63 only beat it by 1 second. They should have compared the sl63 to a zr1.

You think the seat count is what made the difference in this race? Go read a book kid. You can rip those backseats right out of the M6 and it will still lose the race. The M6 being heavier then the SL63 isn't Mercedes fault.

ok fine i understand where your coming from...but what car does mercedes have to compare with the m6. The only car they have is the E550. Why arent they comparing apples with apples. Now i want you to be honest can you compare the m6 with the sl63? horsepower wise you can.. but they are different cars. Thats like me saying you can compare the gl63 vs the sl63 just because the hp numbers are the same.

michael goldsman What are talking about? The E550 is a direct competitor of the 550i, just as the E63 is to the M5. The E-Class does not compete with the 6 series, and never has. The SL63 is the direct competitor of the M6, and it always has been, hence the years and years of comparisons between the two. Especially in this test, they are using the convertible/coupe models of each, and both cars are heavy luxury tourers. They are also identical in power output, aspiration and drivetrain. They are also very similar in chassis dimensions and wheelbase. There is literally nothing that distinguishes one car from the other besides the 2 back seats in the M6, and as I already stated, make no difference in the outcome and result of this test. I think you need to learn a little more about what makes cars competition for one another. Thinking the E-Class competes with the 6-Series is outrageous.

i looked it up and the m6 is only 200 pounds heavier. i dont know, i just think the m6 was meant for more of a everyday car where as the sl63 would be a sports car where you wouldnt drive it everyday.

michael goldsman I see where you're coming from, but looks can be deceiving. The SL and 6 series are both comfortable everyday cars. In fact, most automotive journalists give Mercedes the lead over any BMW when it comes to everyday driving and comfort.

I took an m5 for a test here in California and it did a 3.8 to 62mph GPS verified with my wife and the salesman in the car who is my friend. I havent gotten my hands on an m6 yet but the coupe version will surely do it in at least 3.6 seconds if not faster with just me in the car and a full tank of gas.

No one forgot anything kid, but dropping an engine in a finished platform does not mean "BMW makes everything on Rolls Royce" - as you stated. Rolls Royce are still being built by the same engineers in England, BMW just provides the engine. Mercedes also provides Pagani with their engines, but that doesn't make Pagani a Mercedes-Benz. Get your facts straight before flapping.

The M6 doesn't take 5.3 seconds from 0 to 60. It takes 4.1 seconds. GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT

M6 is a timeless design. Never get bored looking at it

I love both these cars, and have owned AMGs and currently own an M6 convertible...these two really arent competitors as the SL is a two seater and the M6 seats 4. MB doesnt make a 4 seater AMG drop top after killing the CLK63...the idrive system s still a pain...but when all things are aligned, the M6 is a wonderful piece of engineering.

The big thing for me is the SL shed 125 kgs....the M6 gained 55kgs... MASSIVE swing..... Mercedes going in the right direction.

This guy is a great reviewer. I watch countless of videos related to cars but only a hand full, such as this one, creates a feeling that I am actually driving the car.

Bimmers are nothing like they used to be...Coming from a true BMW fan, it's really sad to see an M6 get beaten by a Mercedes. What used to be the agile, fast and sporty car has turned into a fat, heavy and steroid pumped-looking old dude's cruiser.

For those saying shit about this comparison it makes some sense since the BMW M6 is based in the 5-Series platform and the SL63 AMG is based in the E-Class platform. The thing is the SL is a Roadster and the 6-Series is a Cabriolet. Do you kids know the difference? Bet not. The true and fair comparison would be an M6 against an E63 AMG Cabriolet which... doesn't exist... So the SL is the closest to a 6-Series...

Exactly! The Z8 was the true rival to the SL. So was the 300SL and the BMW 507 in the 50s...

when i watch reviews like this i know the answer right before they start,and honestly things like this shouldn't be allowed. how on earth can you compare a 2 seater to a 4 seater with obviously more weight ? a mercedes outperforms a bimmer on track? common! am not saying benz is a shitty car,still great but atleast a bimmer doesn't need 6.5ltr engine to compete. bmw does what benz and americans does with 6.5ltr with just s 4.4ltr engine.now thats efficiency and engineering. if we really check overall engineering achievements and performance,plus pleasure in the ride,we'll all find out no car beat a BMW.

All you Mercedes fans, don't you hurry to be happy about this. I just want to remind you of something. In order to catch up Mercedes has increased the capacity of the engine to 5.5 liters. The BMW is 4.4. That is not а slight difference. A BMW with 5.5 capacity would be around 100 hp above. So in order to win against BMW Mercedes needs a bigger engine ;)

If you think the displacement of the AMG is what helps it win this track race, you don't deserve to talk about cars. If anything a bigger engine up front means this AMG has a less balanced front / rear weight distribution, which would give the advantage to the BMW. Also, MB makes one of the highest ever HP per Liter cars on the planet in the A / CLA45 AMG, so what were you saying about bigger engines? The fact is these 2 cars have very similar HP, yet the AMG is lighter despite the bigger engine, and turns in and corners better, again, DESPITE the bigger engine, not because of it. Also, if you did some research to discover how the BMW M6 makes it's horsepower in comparison to the SL63, you would realize it is due to a big difference in turbo boost pressure (M6 - 21.5 PSI - SL63 17 PSI). Anyone can make a smaller engine with higher boost pressure to make more power, as Mercedes proved with the A45. Displacement doesn't decide lap times idiot. Go read a book.

I'm sorry, but you can't really see "behind the walls". 1. The engine in the Merc is not literally physically bigger, in fact it's even lighter overall than that 4,4L block in the BMW. 2. The fuel consumption is nearly identical, so efficiency-wise, there are also no real differences. 3. However, the bigger cylinder volume has some advantages, such as smoother torque and power curves, and EXACTLY THIS IS the reason AMG uses "oversized" engines compared to the BMW and Audi competitors. And anyways, I think Mercedes already has proven in terms of power/liter performance since they have a 2,0L turbo with 360bhp/450Nm, which is currently the best by far on the market in that regard. You can also look at where they are in Formula1, altho admittedly they use a very complicated hybrid system there, so it's not just about the turbo combustion engine...

5.3 seconds.... this man doesn't deserve to even be in the presence of an automobile.

Majority of the European tests are showing M5/M6 run 4.4 - 4.8 seconds 0 - 60 mph without the 1 foot roll out. Plus this is a convertible, which is heavier so 5.3 seconds is right.

You're totally wrong. The Mercedes is using a 5.5 liter V8 here (Not the old 6.2). It makes vastly more torque as well. BMW was simply out classed here.

The CL63 is on a completely different level than the M6. You can clearly see that by just looking at the price. The M6 is a 4 seat convertible that is sporty and luxurious. The CL63 is a huge luxury coupe that has a huge engine. The CL63 isn't made to ever set foot on a track.

that AMG engine is a masterpiece, you don't have arguments against this. The rest is just taste.

main difference: likely to drive the BMW is a turk with his 3 cousins, gucci outfit and sufficient hair gel to lube the titanic; likely to drive the mercedes is a 55 year old with a bank account in switzerland.

My BMW M6 competition convertible is my weekend car and the 630 horse power is just amazing and super fun to drive!

Almost every reviewer says, that M6 is too heavy, feels quite numb and sounds monotonic. What happened to M division. Their cars used to be the best of every segment. Nowadays it isn't necessarily true, so M fans, donť live in the past. Praise the new SL and hope for better tommorow.

The M Benz is an awesome car. Everyone says it is ugly, but go see it in person. The sound on the video does not do it justice. The car has an amazing sound. The comfort of the M Benz is awesome. The Horsepower is amazing for a M. Benz. It is really an amazing car. If you have not seen one or driven one, it is hard to comment. I have looked at both, driven both. The Comparison is wrong in the video, because I believe them to be in different classes.

Do you compare the price? It's an extra 80-100 grants from the M6 to get SL65.

EVery car reviewer whom has been asked the question: "BMW or Mercedes?" has always said something along the lines of this: "Well Mercedes makes some great cars now and again but every BMW that has came out has been pretty much amazing in one way or another!." Yep. We're at the era where a Mercedes AMG can outhandle and is lighter than a BMW M. The traditional M trademark has been lost, and along with that the reason to buy BMW M models.

760Li was a v12. S63 is a V8. the S65 is a V12. The only reason they compared the S63 to the 760Li was because of their similarity in price. Put an S65 agaisnt the 760Li, well you know the rest... :)

First off, I am not an AMG fanboy nor am I a BMW fanboy, I pretty much like both brands the same. While in the early 2000's M was clearly a better performance division than AMG, I think this has changed, by a lot. I just think AMG is doing so much more than M, with their SLS, 65 V12 motor, and pretty much an AMG version of every Benz model. Not to mention, but the models that compare to BMW's small M range beat out the BMW! Go AMG! They've really progressed in the last 5 years. Next up is AWD..

Mercedes Benz are prioritized to be some of the best every day cars to drive on the market. They do that perfectly. AMG take them, puts a big engine in it, makes them sound amazing, and tightens up the suspension a bit. M gets an advantage because BMWs start off being tuned for more performance handling. However we can see in this video that Mercedes is rapidly improving, and has a much wider variety of cars to chose from. To me, Mercedes has no competitors. They are their own, perfect brand.

I always forget the numbers so when you compare I have no idea which car is quicker on paper. It would be nice to see some table in at end or at the beginning.

Whats your point? They have been comparing the 4 door C63 sedan to the M3 coupe for ages. Those 2 seats don't mean anything. You can literally rip those seats right out of the M6 and it will still be slower. It lost by a full second, not a tenth of a second.

I thought so too.. but If you think of it. CL is basically a S class coupe.. While the 6 is made of the 5 series platform. I do still think that the SL is not a proper to the 6, but it is the closest.

How many seats can you count in the M6 and how many can you count in the SL? The SL is a roadster. The M6 is a GT.

Amg motors and bmw m motors are both works of art. Choose the one that you like the most but dont discredit the other.

I love both these cars...and had a previous M6 with the V10...and an E55 AMG...the big difference here between the M6 and the SL63 is the fact the M6 has back seats...This is a huge deal...and I think most of the folks who buy the M6 buy it for that reason...I did...The fact that it is a second slower on a track where it will never be used is silly. The M6 used to have the CLK63 AMG as a competitor, which is now no longer produced...so this comparison is kind of moot.

I would buy SL63 AMG with a nice white color-black rims and of course AMG Performance Pkg .This car looks awesome!10/10

Modern canvas tops are so well insulated, there's not enough reason to justify the higher cost + weight. I think it looks better too but that's personal.

BMW has prove time and time again that handling is more important than 0-60 times.

M6 will never sound as sweet as the old M6 V10 and that AMG exhaust note sounds dirty in a good way.

DON'T FORGET that the BMW has the 4.4 liter engine in comparison with the mercedes that has the 6.3 liter engine, and the BMW still can chase the merc .

I love how all of you are arguing which car is better, yet BMW and Mercedes Companies are laughing at people like you because of the competition you guys bring them. Honestly both are great cars. Personally, I prefer Mercedes, but everyone has their own opinion. Doesn't mean you people have to lower each other to the point of calling each other the lowest thing one could possibly call another. It's pretty sad...

Your comparing a 4 seater that is larger n has more weight then something thats 2 seater and is smaller n lighter, so what do you think would win ? I think they should at least picked a car that matches up to both of them in size and power

M6 has oil pump failure happening, owners have been told to not drive their cars until theyre called in to have it repaired. The benz, is a old mans car, not a sports car. Still dont understand why people buy cars like these as sports cars, buy a 7 series/ s class as a heavy smooth luxury car and a gtr/z06 as a sports car.

so in standard trim the M6 would be faster (i don't think the carbon ceramic brakes are standard for the SL). Also, the tested 1 sec diff suggests that the M6 when with the carbon brakes (supposedly soon) would likely be faster than the Merc with carbon brake

"Lackluster" sales for Mercedes was 500 Maybach sales a year, and RR sells 800 on average. In the grand spectrum of things for Mercedes and BMW, those 500-800 ultra-luxury cars they sell matter very little in terms of profit margin for each company. Mercedes is to replace the Maybach brand with another ultra-luxury model which will be a variation of the new S-Class, so if they were worried about sales they wouldn't jump right back into the market.

I dont love the way the SL looks, but its power, sound, and interior is far superior to the M6. Mercedes for life.

0-60 in the m6 does not take 5.3 seconds! What road surface did you test that on? Were you shifting manually?

It's 2 tonne plus (bmw) and if you're not using launch control, you're not doing it in 4.3 seconds, especially a turbo rwd car. I've owned 2 x similar cars e63 6.2 rwd and e63s 5.5l rwd and without launch control the 6.2l always did it in 4.3 to 4.5seconds but the high torque means I get poor times quite often of 5 seconds plus even though it should be sub 4 seconds on the 5.5l biturbo. Heck I reckon I can consistently get better 0 to 60 on my v8 330hp 645ci bmw than my e63s (which I both own at present ) even though the AMG hits 630hp on the dyno which is practically double the power

The CL63 has no rival, from any company. It is MUCH bigger and more luxury focused rather than sport focused. The M6 and SL63 are rivals. You are confused.

i loved the old m6 but not the new one and i did not love the old sl63 but i am in love with the new one,reason being last m6 was a true bmw, the new m6 is heavier than the old one, with the sl new,it is lighter than the old one, that sums up everthing, please bring us the classic m cars,which are full of character,

actually the bmw is 4.4 and the benz is 5.4. they are both twin turbo, and i am sure that anyone who is a rev head will understand that 1 second between 5 seconds 0-100 (m6) and 4 seconds 0-100 (sl) is a huge difference.

The Merc is lighter, easier to control, great sound and look, it's a very high quality car, i dont see why you people are crying ... I like both BMW and Merc, but here, the SL is the clear winner .

Benz really knows how to build a perfect roadster. They've been building the SL for years and years. Benz is still lighter with a retractable metal roof... hmm

when i wrote that, i didn't put nurburgring as a point of comparation, but something like straight line. In your case we can afirm that Renault Megane RS R26.R(08:16:90) can beats cars like camaro ss(8:20), C55AMG W203, M3 E46 and many other cars which in reallity aren't competitors for megane, and will eat it without big effort. So i think that nurburgring is not the best point of comparation. And other side - everybody knows that BMW is good in corner and Benz in straight line.

I meant M3 vs RS5. And dude really the Panamera T S is waay more expensive than the M5. Put a M5 E63 and a Panamera 4S and the BMW M5 will win. Best allrounder ever. Balance, handling and sheer driving pleasure..

If you're refering to the Vorsteiner widebody M3, then no. It isn't a supercar. And it does NOT cost 600.000€!! What are you smoking man?.... look.. BMW M3 - 70 000€ Widebody kit - 7500€ Supercharger - 5000€ Wheels and misc stuff - 5000€ yea that's almost 600 000.........

Are those two cars really direct rivals? The M6 is a big 4-seater convertible GT, while the SL63 is a small 2-seater roadster. It's pretty obvious that the smaller and more powerfull Merc will win this battle. I'd rather put the M6 against an E63 Cab or something that has similar size, weight and power.

They are both electronically limited to 155 to decrease carbon emissions. Unlimited, both would top 190

Some official 0-100 facts for you, my friend! SLK55 4.6 sec. ---> 1M 4.9 sec. C63 4 doors 4.4 sec. ---> M3 sedan 4.7 sec. S65, and even S600 Long ---> 750Li Even with the same official 0-100km`s accelerations, SL63 (4.3 sec) owns M6 (4.3 sec) on the track, but if M6 is the top version, SL stil have another more powered model - SL65, which acceleration to from 0 to 100 is 4.0 secs. And if we compare top versions, I`m sorry, but Benz beats Bimmer :)

Top Gear isn't the final say on the planet. I've seen many reviews that say the S63 is far better than the 760Li. And especially since James May did that review, and he doesn't like loud grunt cars. The C63 is better than the M3 in every situation but on a very tight track. When the E63 is redesigned next year, it will leave the M5 in the dust. In the end, when you are driving a Mercedes-Benz, you're in a Mercedes-Benz. Being in a BMW doesn't even compare.
