Mercedes ML, GL, and R Class AVIN 9" Android 10 Infotainment Overview! (W164, X164, W251)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I just go over the basic operating system along with some of my favorite features of the AVIN Android infotainment I installed in my 2009 ML63. There are a few quirks I'm trying to work out, so any advice in the comments would be appreciated! Overall very happy with this, and its a huge upgrade over the stock unit. While the R Class and ML/GL units are slightly different, they share an operating system and have very similar if not exactly the same functionality.

WIRING: So it seems that there are a good amount of questions regarding the wiring and powering of the unit along with the MOST Amp. From what I've learned over the past few months, it seems that your wiring harness for the original head unit can slightly differ depending on facelift (MY2009-MY2011 for ML, up to MY2012 for GL in the US) or prefacelift (pre-MY2009 W164), along with certain options your car had from factory. While you could spend hours looking for wiring diagrams on forums for your specific W164 model (if you do, I don't blame you, that's what I did), I recommend getting a multimeter to see which of the wires on YOUR car's harness receives power ONLY WHEN IGNITION IS ON. This would ensure you do not have the battery drain issues some people have had, along with myself. I'm no expert regarding wiring, but perhaps someone can respond to this comment with some better info and advice on the best way to tap into the power wires, to ensure a clean source, especially for the MOST amplifier.
REGARDING THE AM/FM RADIO: One of the biggest issues I've been having with this unit so far is the FM radio. Now, for me personally this isn't an issue as I use CarPlay as my audio source. However, this is my dad's daily driver, and he almost exclusively uses the radio. For the time being I have swapped the original head unit back in so that he has music, but I am still looking for a proper solution to this. I believe the way to fix this issue, is to plug one the white FAKRA cable (with the provided extension) into the satellite radio receiver. For the prefacelift cars (not sure if all prefacelifts or just certain model years), it seems that the satellite radio is under the rear seats, in fact, this is where AVIN themselves told me to plug in the FAKRA cable. On my car (facelift 2009 ML63), under the rear seats I only have the AMG fuel pump modules, and a voice command module. At this point, I haven't had enough time to continue looking for the satellite radio reciever, but my next guesses would be either behind the tail light, above the headliner in the cargo area, or in the tailgate itself. I will update this comment once I figure it out.
THE GAUGE CLUSTER CLOCK: After changing the unit, you may realize that there is now no way to change the analog clock in the instrument cluster. Someone in the comments mentioned there is a fuse you must remove, which then activates a clock menu in the gauge cluster screens. I will look into this in the future.
Thanks for your patience, I'm hoping to resolve these small issues soon, and will make an update video when I can. If anyone has some advice or info regarding all this, please respond to this comment, it would be greatly appreciated!

You can reset the time by pulling the instrument cluster fuse at noon. Fuse is located on the passanger side. I did this on my ML550 to fix the issue. After the fuse was replugged clock when to 12:00. I also noticed that time option became available in the settings that you adjust from the steering wheel.

@@SamAbraham sorry forgot the fuse number. It is one of the 10 or so fuses on the passenger side. Once reset is done time shows up in the setting on the steering control. I remember googling it because Mercedes does not put fuse info in the manual.

I just installed this on my 2011 R350 but the FM radio is trash and the back up camera is saying no signal. Do I need a special wire for the OEM back up camera? Also, how do I fix the FM radio so it can stop being static?

Unfortunately for the time being I've reinstalled the stock unit, this is my dad's primary car and he needed the radio. As a result I personally have not resolved the radio issues, but you may see some people in the comments have their own solutions. As for analog clock adjustment, apparently removing one of the fuses for the COMAND brings up a new menu in the gauge cluster for clock adjustment

I actually just ordered this because my car battery has been draining. I used a amp hound and found that my command unit was using 1.1 amps with the car shut off and it was extremely hot! I have no idea why it was doing that, hopefully I can wire up the new unit correctly.

Did you figure out the radio? I think I read somewhere that (for the more recent model years) the original radio antennae piggybacks off the sirius xm antennae system - which is located somewhere in the rear (for x164s)

Unfortunately haven't gotten to it yet, if you check out my pinned comment you'll see I was looking for the sirius antennae but didn't actually locate it yet. Seems to be under the rear seats in some cases, but not in mine. I'm thinking behind the right tail light, the tailgate, or above the headliner in the roof

What about steering controls? I installed an Android HU on my 2006 MB C280 back in 2012. This unit came with a BUS decoder but, the cycle mode in the car's dashboard didn't work correctly. For example, after finding a radio station with good reception, if I pressed the left button on the steering wheel, the radio station changed. On the original command, you could only change radio stations or "up" or "down" only when the onboard computer screen on the dashboard was on "AUDIO" feature. If you were on "Service", "Miles", etc, the audio was not affected. So, is it the same situation with this HU? Also, the easiest way for me to solve the poor radio reception was to install an aftermarket antenna inside the A-pillar or under the liner. It solved the problem.

  • @SamAbraham

    @SamAbraham

    3 жыл бұрын

For steering controls, all you get with this one is volume up and down, nothing for skipping tracks/changing radio stations works. The instrument cluster mode/page doesn't seem to have any affect on the HU in this case. Thanks for the tip about the aftermarket antennae, that seems like a great option!

@@SamAbraham I was about to buy this unit www.ebay.com/itm/114701599679?ViewItem=&vxp=mtr&item=114701599679 but, I sold my C280 last December. Now, this seller, claims that this CANBUS is compatible with the mode/page system on the dashboard. Would be interested to test it. I just like to keep certain functions in the car as stock as possible. I know, is not always the case. He also offers some options to use the factory antennae. I might break the bank and buy the same model you have and try to make some mods... Great Video by the way!

@@SamAbraham Yes. I am down to 2 Mercedes now. 2010 Ml 350 4Matic and 2011 E350 4Matic. This is my second ML350. The previous one was a 2000 ML320. I loved that nugget! I have been thinking about maybe getting an ML500 from the same year. Such a smooth ride for a clunky-looking vehicle! They were built like a tank! Not fast but, very strong and fun to drive. I saw that about AVIN! Pretty cool. Unfortunately, I had to let baby Benz go. She had 210,000 miles already when she left. Oh well. Thanks for the heads up :) :)
