Mercedes EQA 2021 review - Is the baby EQ the best electric Benz ? / Electrifying

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Read more about the Mercedes EQA here with our in-depth review: www.electrifying.com/reviews/...
While rivals have been scrambling to produce designed-from-the-ground-up electric cars such as the BMW i3 and VW ID.3, Mercedes has taken a more practical approach - just convert existing cars. The first example of this was the EQC and now there's this - the EQA, which uses the petrol and diesel-powered GLA as a starting point.
Unlike the posh and pricey EQC though, this is aimed at the more affordable end of the electric car market with prices starting at £44,495. That’s above the big-selling Leaf and ID.3 and into Tesla territory.
But is is any good? Nicki Shields and Tom Ford find out

A very entertaining video, as always from the Electrifying team - thank you. And, I'm totally with Nicki's point about the interior of the car actually being of greater importance than the exterior - which is why I'm SO disappointed at VW's utterly shoddy excuse for an interior on the iD3...! What a disappointment - good value... good range... rear wheel drive... but margarine-tub quality plastics inside...

Hello Can I just agree 100% with your comment about the ID3,4 etc - They spent all the money on the drivetrain and lacked the finesse on the interior and don't mention the user interface...

They couldn't grab electrically adjustable seats from the parts bin? Really? That and the lack of cable storage just kills this one for me. I'll accept manual seats in a VW E-UP, not in a Mercedes.

Best car of Europe only a little bit behind of Tesla in its technic. Loads quicker than Audi and feels much better inside than all the VW, Skoda und Asian colleagues and even Tesla with its not existing interior. Did not like Mercedes before, but this car is excellent. Plus: In difficult situation there is nothing better than front wheel drive. Try to get one if you can!

Great review and very honest! Just looked at the website and some basic options really push the price up... the fact that it's a bit of an electric retrofit makes me think it'll be better waiting for the next generation from Mercedes. At the moment I'd go for a VW ID4 & ID5 over this, even though you can't beat the premium interior of the Mercedes.

I could have put up with the performance, small boot. However, the rear seats are unergonomic and not having dedicated storage area for both leads is a MASSIVE oversight. Let’s see how the GLB equivalent in pure electric, EQB will B. Here in Australia, I’ve recently upgraded to 3 phase and a 30kW solar system, all 120 panels on the one big roof which looks awesome. Just got to find the right comfortable vehicle.

So, is EQA an electric version of GLA or A class? Is EQS an electric version of GLS or S class? How about EQC? They really need to figure out how they want to name their cars, it's so confusing..

Get a Model 3. More boot space, more rear space, more range, lower price, 4WD, Better charge speeds and UI. The only thing this beats Tesla in is quality, as the wind noise is still prevalent in both.

I thought I was going to like this car but yet again another compromised vehicle from Mercedes. The EQS shows what they can do if they actually go for it. This has just too many compromises for me.

Very impressive review.. Good to see more EV choice. Not sure its true to say it's starting point. Perhaps Harry and Paul could include this in "I saw you coming" Glad to see you picked up on some of the annoying stuff. The Germans are very good at seducing us by their brushed aluminum, and perceived high quality interior, not to mention the ridiculous fat range dropping tyres that also cost a fortune to replace. It's about time we stopped falling for stuff like that... 66KWh battery sounds good, but will it beat the e-niro range? Well done for spotting the rear leg comfort is terrible.. e-niro is much better for rear and front comfort. What's the turning circle? Going into the Merc dealer, we have to deal with grey suited sales people.

Non-bespoke EVs have chance against the from the ground up architected EVs like the Ioniq 5 and EV6… especially when they’re actually a Nissan Quashqai… only brand snobs would buy these… however many brand loyal Merc drivers choose to spend their hard earned on a specked up petrol version.

A couple of unsolicited notes: 1) Lose the style-cramping patronising Tom Ford. Even Nicky isn’t the same when he’s around. 2) Applies to all electrics: YOU DON’T NEED to carry all the cables with you. Some charging stations have a built in cable, and at most you will use one Type2 cable. All the other toys can stay home.
