    Not a W212 in video, it's an S212. Was a MB tech for 8 years, these cars are solid. If you are worried about airmatic, don't get an estate (only rear air springs for load levelling) or 550/63 (usually a performance option) most come with steel springs. We didn't have 4 cyl diesel in US, but we had the V6, don't get a V6 diesel, egr creates tons on carbon soot in intake manifold, and I've seen the OM642 seize due to main bearing failure at 20k miles with all services done. If you want a reliable 212 get a W212 (sedan) with steel springs, M272 (2010, 2011), and do all recommended services in your booklet. Common problems are: fading wood trim, cam solenoids (super easy to replace), thermostat, intake manifold tumbler linkage can break (only effects engine performance, you won't notice it ) and rarely the conductor plate in the transmission will throw a speed sensor fault and will need to be replaced. They will go 200k miles+ with original drive train with minimal repairs needed. I was going to get one but got a W204 C63 because I'm a moron.

    JDM180 you are right I owned w204 with 3.0 m272 and it was most reliable car even with 200000 miles, change transmission oil every 35000 miles then that conductor plate shouldn’t be a problem and I also had linkage break on manifold ,I changed it with dorman kit other than that I always used liqui moly oils in it and always used original coolant and avoided thermostat replacement., and most important I was tired of bent wheels on 225/45/17,245/40/17 but I changed it to 17x8 et 45 rial with 235/50/17 that’s hack if someone want luxury ride in their sport models.

    I bought a US Spec 2010 W212 E350 4Matic Sedan back on my vacation home while stationed in Korea. It had 80k miles and was a lease and previous CPO. The complete maintenance records showed not a single component breaking, and all routine maintenance was accomplished. I put 3k miles on her in less than a month, 2k of those from a road trip from Western Colorado to Central Iowa and back. I only ran into two problems: smoke started billowing out of the engine bay on my way home from the dealer - not a problem, one of the dealer workers didn't fully seat the dipstick, and the tire refill stem on the rear driver side wheel sheared off from prior corrosion - a free fix from a local tire shop. From the time I spent with the W212, I instantly fell in love with the car, and really began to highly appreciate the effort Mercedes-Benz put into the smallest details of this lineup. My car is going on 9 years old and not a single electrical feature has failed. While I have a special spot in my heart for the BMW 5 series, as my first car was a '92 535i, I couldn't recommend a 5-Series to you without at least having you consider an E-Class as well. Both are absolutely superb cars for what they both offer - the E-Class is an absolute tank, and offers the ride quality expected out of a Mercedes-Benz, while having a commanding presence. The 5-Series has the feeling of Sumo wrestler that moonlights as a professional ballerina. Both are tanks that handle extremely well, but the 5-Series feels specifically focused on this, and sacrifices just a little of what makes the E-Class a better contender: total calmness in the cabin and long range comfort.

    Great presentation. I had a similar issue with the suspension. Instead of both sides being lower, only the left rear side was lower. Turns out the pneumatic line between the valve block and left air spring was leaking air. A repair was install and it's good as new. Cost of repair was $440 at the local Mercedes repair shop.

    This was spot on with my S212 (4matic Estate)! 1)I had a solenoid failure in Airmatic and it was covered under warranty. 2)The air bolsters in the driver seat split a seam, covered under warranty. 3)Finally had to have new airbags installed in rear suspension at 75,000 miles. 4)The motor mounts are starting to wear out at 100,000 miles and I feel vibration. I plan on having that fixed this year. 5)My own thing: to have all four corners replaced with tighter Bilstein shocks at next service. It's been a great car! edit: I've also had to have the EGR valve replaced on the diesel E350 at 75k, just like you mentioned.

    I had assumed that this would be a list of potential problems specific to Mercedes W112, it is not. All of these problems can and do happen to any car of any make or model #1Any car with air suspension may develop leaks at some point in it's life, just as your tires can develop leaks. I've found that repairing this in most Mercedes models is easier than with most other air suspension cars. # 2 Every car built with ABS will have ABS sensors, and normally it is one of two things The Sensor and or the reluctant wheel are gummed up with dirt mud grease of just general gunk, or the sensor wire is broken, or last the sensor is bad. The sensors are easy to get to and easy to change, it takes as long to jack the car up and remove the wheel as it does to change the sensor, just make sure the little tooth ring that the sensor reads is not a gummed up mess, clean it off. #3 All cars have an EGR valve, and eventually they will all become clogged up, you can take them off and clean them which works "Most" times or just buy a new one they are not expensive. On Mercedes cars they are quite simple and easy to replace. #4 motor mounts in ALL cars eventually break, the Mercedes mounts are oil filled like shocks, that is why they dampen the engine vibrations and. They will tend to crack and leak the fluid out after High mileage. Lower powered cars will last longer, high powered cars like AMG for instance won't last as long especially if you have a heavy foot. There are only two engine mounts and one transmission mount which usually last a long time. #5 this is not really a common problem, and it can also happen to any car that sits a long time, it will clear itself with a few miles of driving. Now for the Scanner. Yes the i-soft is one of the better scanners around, but if you can afford about $600 U.S, go for a true diagnostic computer and you will be able to pin point every module and every problem in the car with a push of a few buttons just as the dealer does. Untill a few years ago, you could not get one that would work on Mercedes unless you wanted to buy one from Mercedes at a cost of around $30,000 U.S. minimum, and you had to go to school to learn how to use the damn thing. I know I have one which I don't use much anymore. Now you can buy one that works as well as the computer at the dealership for $600 to $700 that will diagnose any car made that has an OBD2 port. The one I have been using in my shop the past few years is is a MaxDas 808, you can buy them on line at dozens of tool sellers. It surprised me but the cheapest place I found was Walmart on line, (No they don't sell them in their stores.) Amazon was almost the same price. the Snap-on ones are extremely over priced, and complicated, hard to learn to operate and do not do much more than the MaxDas. There are newer brands out there, so just check around. If you wish to diagnose any car in the world, make sure you are looking at a diagnostic computer and not a scanner. If it costs less than about $600 new, it is probably a scanner. I have hooked diagnostic computers to hundreds of makes and models of cars. Some cars will give you minimale information when it runs a complete scan, some will tell you a bit more. I have hooked to Jaguars and they will give you maybe 10 or 15 things that it checked. Mercedes cars will will give you pages of lines of the things it has check, and when it finds a fault you can click it and go deeper into the cars computer and check each and every component to find which one is the problem. It will even tell simple things like you if your trunk light or license plate is out and if you really want to know, it will also tell you every instance of that light going out since the car left the factory and at approximately what milage that it happened. All by touching a few things on a touch screen. If you can operate a smart phone, you can work one of these. I'm not advertising MaxDas, it's just the one I have right now, as a matter of fact my fingers are itching to try out a couple of other brands, after all mine is a couple years old and the new ones are out there. LoL. The MaxDas 808 will not allow you to reprogram the cars computer like the MB Star, but you can get a MaxDas model that will if you want to spend about $1,500 and up, but how often are you planning on programing you ECM?

    I've seen a bunch of W212's and other MB's for that matter, AUXILLARY BATTERY MALFUNCTION. Getting ready to replace mine soon. $100 USD installed locally. I've had a few other minor issues (auto headlamps will stop functioning...3 times now... doesn't affect the operation, you just have to turn them off and on. Fortunately, it is random and I think it may be related to the AUX BATTERY issue...fingers crossed)(another was the CRUISE CONTROL NOT FUNCTIONING appeared on the screen, causing the ESP light to come on. The car died while driving on the interstate when this happened. All dash lights illuminated, car wouldn't start... After sitting for 25-30 minutes, the car started and left no trace of the issue... hasn't happened since). Mine E350 4Matic is a 2010 with 150,000 miles. I bought it in January 2022 and have put 6,200 miles on it. Hopefully, these few problems aren't indicative of what is to come. I love the car more than any vehicle I've owned. I hope to keep it indefinitely!

  • @pavelpauliepetras
    @pavelpauliepetras5 жыл бұрын

    On my W211 I can confirm some of this points as well: on air suspension I had same issue. It starts to lose air an fall down on back (firstly after 3or4 days, after a while it was after day day and than after half an hour - it was 1month process). When it was falling down so fast, I've changed airbag immediately, to avoid risk of defect of air compressor (maybe it is important caution to everyone. Don't use car with this issue long time, you will ruine compressor and repair cost will me much higher... Next thing is ABS. It is not just about sensor. In my car it was ring on axle, sensor was ok. And finally vibrations. Fighting with that from beginning (own car more than year). Different wheels with different set of tyres, suspension revised and changed some components. But issue still same. Engine mounts revised and should be ok as well. Maybe I will change it anyway and will see...

    @Commenter2 I agree with your philosophy on used car purchases: avoid unnecessary complexity. That being said, some people really enjoy the ride quality offered by a Mercedes or other luxury car, and buying a used model might sometimes make sense for them. For those that aren't mechanically inclined, I only hope they inform themselves of the significant costs of properly maintaining these vehicles so that they can determine for themselves whether it is worth the experience, budget appropriately, or arrange for some warranty.

    Bonnet opening failed . . . I have a 2013 E Class W212 Saloon Sport. I had one issue when it was 5 years old, that I or my non Mercedes mechanic could not fix, was Opening the Bonnet. The Release moved and I could hear the cable moving under the bonnet. The bonnet would not release but the bonnet open light came on, on the dash (with beeping when driving). I took it to Mercedes who fixed it for around £225. I asked for the old catches back and both were still seized and locked closed !! Don't know how they removed them. Both catches had NO GREASE on them so I asked Mercedes, who service it, why no grease. They told me greasing them is not on the Mercedes list of servicing so we looked at a new car in the showroom and guess what, No Grease . . . The low suspension thing seems to be normal, we have the E350 version of this car, and we went on holiday to Greece for about 10 days. We came back to the cars suspension dropping, car turned on and the suspension just raised to normal. It doesn't seem to be a bad thing, nor a good thing. Car just does it haha. Car is now comfortably sitting at almost 280k miles! Thing runs and sounds fantastic and like a rocket too. I definitely recommend putting a bit more cash into getting the E350 version compared to the E250.

    I honestly disagree with this video im a tech and a owner of a w212 and i have well over 120k on my clock and i must say they are solid and they are very reliable. Oil change to oil change. I only put good quality parts back in my car and so far I've changed my waterpump and my battery and the command knob works on side to side instead on flying thru a selection but its a $50 fix which i haven't gotten around to.. in other words if i was given an option to buy a w212 again i would happily do so.

    Thank you. I have a 2011 E250 Estate (S212); in cold weather the rear suspension sinks overnight; when the weather is warmer this does not happen. I have had the car checked by a MB specialist garage, and they could find no fault showing during a computer interrogation, neither could they find any air leaks (soap solution sprayed over suspension components). Clearly air is still escaping, so a bit of a mystery. It takes 1 minute to pump up if the suspension has sunk, and since this is not yet a major probleem I do not want to spend money on replacing components that may actually be OK.

    add blocked roof drains resulting in car flooding during rainy season, the headlamp washer cover tends to get broken off while driving, transmission mount fails resulting in that vibration through the chassis while driving. also, you can reset the transmission if it's getting clunky especially on a car you're intending to purchase - takes less than 5mins versus endless driving just so the transmission can 'learn' your driving technique.

    You forgot to mention the 722.9 7 speed transmission. The conductor plate which is attached to the Transmission Control Unit tend to fail. First symptoms are rough shifting mainly from 1st to 2nd then soft limp mode until eventually completely goes into limp mode. Repair varies depending on the TCU. Anywhere for $1500 to $3000

    A lot of 7g tronics and 7g tronic+ suffer from jerky shifting when cold but it doesn’t necessarily mean a conductor plate failure. It can be anything from oil to software, küb or other solenoids etc. or no fault whatsoever. It has happened even with new cars and Mercedes couldn’t fix them. I also have jerky 2-3 shifts when cold (7g+) but not all the time. Transmission oil was changed, küb valve was changed, adaptations made, tcu software updated, all possible tests done. It helped some but did not remove the problem completely. All values are as they should be and there is absolutely nothing different in measured parameters compared to other shifts. It’s just feels different for reasons unknown. MB garage or Mercedes Benz factory do not have any more ideas left and the conclusion was that it’s a ”feature”. The ”feature” has been there since new. Some people have had the whole transmission changed and it still jerks! Some people complain that even 9g tronics might jerk in similar way. Go figure...

    Also if you have 2011 or 2010 with m272/273 engine the intake manifold tumbler flaps break typically before 100k miles. This will store a fault in the m.e. control unit but will not through check engine light. If goes unrepaired the bushings inside intake will come apart and potentially get sucked throw the engine or get stuck in valves causing misfire. (intake alone is around $800).
