Why The W212 Is One Of THE MOST RELIABLE Cars ever. Secondhand Mercedes E Class 2013-16 Buyer Guide.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Find out why this is one of THE most reliable Mercedes ever made.
By popular demand i'm reviewing a W212 mercedes E class today. Buying a used e class isn't always that simple. Should you buy a mercedes E class W212? What are the common issues and is it still a good car today?
The mercedes e class W212 was produced from 2009-2016 and received a facelift in 2013 which gave it a significant more modern look and refreshed interior. I'm reviewing the facelifted model which was a serious step forward from the outgoing model. The most noticeable change has to be the headlights who merged the 2 seperate light units togehter into one unit. The taillights also received an update which made them look more modern and in 2020 these lights still look up to date and ahead of their time.
I myself have owned and daily driven this model for about 3 years and 100k km plus so i can give a detailed user impression and experience.
Check it out and let me know if you would still buy this car if you're on a budget?

@@MW-tt3fy I don’t know, the 350s are often the most reliable ones, especially the W212 chassis. The 3.5L V6 is a solid unit of an engine. Proven yet silky smooth in its power delivery. I’ve seen a lot of those with mileage nearing 200k miles and quite some other examples beating out the quarter million mile range to going as far as half a million miles. Another comment mentioned that there were some Scandinavian W212 diesel taxis with mileage as high as 1 Million KMs (600,000+ Miles) . The diesels are another beast of a kind in durability and reliability.

My Father has the first of the W212 Series (59 plate here in the UK). He has owned it for 11 years (the longest he’s has ever kept a car by a long way), because he simply loves it! Reliability is fantastic if you service them on time, and it’s such an economical car on diesel - we’ve seen it return 57mpg on long runs. Dad is soon to upgrade the car, and I’m going to buy it off him to keep in the family. It has covered almost 200,000 miles and is still like new inside. There’s no fading on any of the interior buttons, the leather seats still look fantastic, and the wood trim is as good as new. Also, there are no rattles or squeaks at all. Impressive! Just recently the drivers heated seat has stopped working which seems to be a common fault, and it’s currently having the turbo reconditioned. They seem like they were built to last. Oh, I forgot to say Mercedes Benz recently paid for a whole new rear subframe as there’s a real problem across many models of the rear subframe rotting. Fantastic cars and I can’t wait to keep it running for many more years to come. It still makes us smile.

Facelifted W212 is not just reliable, it's super reliable. We have some taxis in Scandinavia with over 1 million kilometers on the clock. By the way I can't tell W212 and W213 avantgarde version apart from the front when I see them in the traffic. They look almost exactly the same. W213 is more rounded but it's not easy to spot. So this looks almost similar to the 2020 model from the front. At least to me that is not a hardcore Merc expert.

We have an E350 (W212) from 2012 (170 000km) and so far has been extremely reliable. The only bigger repair/replacement were the engine mounts at 150 000km and some part in the ventilator for the engine at around 140 000km. Also it needed a new auxilliary battery. What we like the most apart from the reliability, in no particular order: 1. Drives and handles very well, 2. Very comfortable with lots of leg room at the back, 3. Powerful engine, 4. Smooth transmission, 5. Very distinctive classy looks, 6. Excellent suspension, 7. Very quiet, 8. Good visibility. What are the rooms for improvement? 1. Fuel economy in the city could be better, 2. Trunk space could be bigger, 3. The infosystem is quite out of date, 4. Any repairs are basically double the price in comparison to Toyota (then again if you compare this to Camry, it´s a different experience) If you need a reliable sedan, would highly recommend this one.

Picked up a four year old 2016 USA E350 in 2019 with 90K on the odometer. It has the 3.5l 276 engine. I changed the transmission fluid immediately after the purchase. Been driving it three years with almost no issue. Had to replace the ignition coil on cylinder number two last week. Total cost was $200, including the scan tool used to diagnose the vehicle. Other than that, maintenance has consisted of changing the oil every six months. Brakes are due for replacement, but there is still plenty of pad left for another five thousand miles or so. We'll see. Paid $19,200 for the car and it seems like a good deal.

As for the w212 (V6), it's suggested that its more reliable than the w213. He's right about the ATX being a bit clunky. However you can do a work around by resetting the transmission and doing regular service (change trans fluid every 30k miles not 70k). If you shift the gears at a stop up to 3rd, 4th or 5th gear, enter sport mode, press brake to 'Hold', you can definitely launch it faster than the documented time. Also don't just mash the throttle 🤦🏾‍♂️ I still don't comprehend why reviewers to this day still do that, that's an inefficient way to launch a car without launch control. As for US models the V6 petrol is the best version and most reliable.

Well if it's been taken care of properly by the previous owner(s) then those are pretty reliable engines. But u need to be sure they've had an immaculate history as these r pretty powerful engines so make sure they weren't used by youngsters to do burnouts, dragraces and drifts and such as those things stress the drive train and engine a lot. If they were abused like that then u will have a lot of repair costs especially if it has more than 80 or 100k miles. So be sure to let a mechanic check the car out thoroughly before signing any deal. If the engine(rod bearings, fuel pump, valves, timing belt,...) and other parts are in good condition then u can go ahead and buy it and tell ur son to drive it responsibly and maintain it very well. Then costs should be minimal 🙂 also check closely for rust around wheel arches and under the car

Well, those arent the most reliable models but with proper maintenance and good care you should be able to avoid most issues. Most common issues are that components could fail like the air compressor and the rear air suspension springs. Cabin rattling sounds caused by loose interior trim parts may start developing over 100k miles. Especially if the car did a lot of city driving. Other than that i havent heard about timing belt issues but it is adviced to change it after 80k miles as this is a high power car. Rod bearings should defimetely be changed after that mileage in these cars. Check for turbo leaks and heavy oil consumption aswell

Both are 2.15 litre. The 250 does have better mid range pull but is a bit noisier. So if u buy a 220 and remap it, it will be as fast as the 250. Further it's just your own preference :)

Great review! I bought a 2016 E350 4matic luxury model (with stand up hood star) a year ago and love it with zero issues (except for the comand update which was done for free). Again, excellent review! My only question is, Why is it that most Americans give Mercedes Benz very lower reliability rates but other markets give them high reliability ratings? Maybe Americans expect too much?

Thank you so much for the motivating feedback and congratulations with your purchase! I hope you have a lot of fun and safe miles with it 😁 And yes in the US mercedes, BMW and Audi cars are not that reliable. This is because those cars are built in the US and build quality there is inferior to the cars they build in Germany. That's why these brands are pretty reliable in European countries and not so much in the US as other, cheaper parts are used there. That's also why these cars are a lot cheaper for us in the US.

It's not only the reliability but also the cost of servicing and labor in the U.S. Mercedes is positioned as solely a luxury car manufacturer (we get no A, B Class, etc.) and the costs to service match. Parts are also often more expensive than in Europe. That said, my mother owns a W212 E350 (V6), and it has been very reliable for her.

But with high mileage cars you always want to make sure if it was properly maintained and had his service done in time. Also check for some oil leaks on the back of the cylinders, it's a known issue but easily and cheaply fixed. also, if possible, do a pre purchase inspection through a good mechanic, he will tell you if the car has been well maintained and in good condition or not. Also chek if the bumpers and the hood are not slightly decolored which may imply the car has been in an accident and those parts were repainted. Engine issues should be minimal but only if you're sure the car was properly maintained so do make sure u can get that verified. if properly taken car of these cars can run over 300k miles easily without any big problems. electronical issues are not common in the w212. oh yea, also make sure the car hasnt been tuned or modified for obvious reasons ;)

@Michael Kinsella strange, mine never had any issues and these clusters are not an issue at all here in europe. In the US it is as the build quality of these cars isnt as reliable there.
