I’ve always preferred the non sport package models (for pretty much every car brand) because they just look more elegant. In my opinion, the only time when car manufacturers really knew how to make great looking sport packages for their models was the 2000’s, because, even though the cars looked more sporty, they weren’t overly aggressive or complicated, like nowadays.

To be honest, I like the design of this "refreshed" GLC because of the fact that it is not too crazy in terms fo design. While it is refreshing to see car makers go out on a limb and create quirky, and interesting cars from a design perspective, but when designing luxury cars, there is a certaing a simplicity and elegance that is expected in brands such as German manufacturers. There is a lot that can be learned from Genesis in designing imposing and striking cars in terms of their design, but also being elegant. The new GLC is a wonderfully designed car while their electric cars, I believe they are falling short on. With that being said. I am curious to see how Genesis continues to improve their design.

The biggest change in the interior is probably the fact that almost all materials beneath the upper dashboard are made of cheap hard plastics now. This is unheard of in this price range. Also none of the extra 6 cm in length made it into the cabin. The space available is exactly the same except for the front row, where you have slightly less head and legroom as before.

I have a 2020 GLC and I do agree that the 2016 external design was more consistent. However its info screen was hideous with ultrathick bezels, so I like the 2020 interior more. The 2023 one is externally ok, a slight step back imo with the weaker looking side design. But, I do have concerns with the interior, the asymmetrical info screen and no button approach. All in all, I probably will not renew my lease for a 2023 GLC.

Of the three models you mentioned in the video, 2022 GLC w/ AMG Line Package is my favorite. I think the 2016-2022 GLC has a very classic rear wheel drive proportion with elegant lines. Most of the 2016-2019 GLC I see on the road have halogen lamps the standard 5-spoke wheels. Those looked a bit droopy and pedestrian to me. The 2020-2022 refreshed model modernized both the front and rear end, and the AMG line adds the starry grille and multi-spoke wheels, taking the elegance to a new level. I drive a 2018 Q5. I think it looks better than the 2016-2019 GLC. But when parked next to the refreshed GLC, I always think the GLC looks slightly bigger, more mature and more luxurious. The 2023 model blends in some EQ line design languages all the way around. Updated design? Sure. More elegant? I don’t think so. With the added dimension and what seems to be a bigger front overhang, the cab-rearward look isn’t as strong as previous model. With shoulder line gone, the side profile looks less athletic and a bit boring. The rear end also looks less unique than before, so it’s a meh for me. On the interior, I personally prefer the nav screen to be placed high as in the previous model, and with physical buttons below for a much easier operation while driving. Unfortunately the 2023 model went the other direction. Also that screen’s slight angle totally looks like a manufacturing defect. Functionally this may be better, but aesthetically speaking, this is a fail.

So the non amg has a more traditionally shaped grill when compared to the AMG, which has the flipped grill. I guess to show that the AMG is more aggressive/angry. The angled center display would drive my OCD crazy lol. It almost makes the center console between the seats look like it's not centered. I'll take the 2022 exterior with the 2020 interior lol.

I used to have a 2011 GLK 350, which I actually bought in 2011. I loved the angular design and shapes of it. But 2 months ago it was lost in an accident and I decided to move on. Initially, I wanted to buy a newer GLK 350 from 2015 because I just loved this design, but I decided to buy a 2018 GLC AMG 43. And when I saw the car in real life it just looked right. Although the lines are much smoother than in GLK, GLC somehow looks more luxurious and serious. Love this new GLC so far.

Mercedes is doing a few steps backwards... as BMW is doing as well... that happens when you found your best design and then someone says "Now you gotta make a new one"... both, BMW and Mercedes had found their stride around 2014.... talking about the design, that is... and now they have to come up with something better and can't. And they shouldn't. They should take a note from Porsche's book and do it like Porsche evolves the 911. Don't try to re-invent a great shape, just make small adjustments to make it better over time.

Love your approach and how granular you get with analysing and critiquing design decisions. I own the 2020 GLC 300 (AMG Premium Plus) and I love it. I agree on the beefier stance of the 2016, but not entirely sure about the excessive tilt of the front graphics and how there is a narrow slice almost like a stoke meeting with the center part. I am pretty happy with 2020 and the updated front and back graphics -love the squares when illuminated at the back. 2023 looks good but I feel it has lost the beefyness if you get me. Much more intricate and thin parts/shapes for my liking. Also don't get me on the unibrow lights bar - other than added affordance when someone is breaking in front of you , I don't think it offers more than hopping onto the trend bandwagon. And to only think that it was probably KIA or Honda with the Civic that they adopted the unibrow. What is your take as a professional on this actually? Would love to hear more. Finally, the interior. This is actually a step back with regards to materials and perception of luxury. I have sat inside mostly all the new line of Mercedes and it is sad to admit but cutting costs has made the cars look really cheap. Capacitive controls on the steerign wheel and doors its just out of this world for Mercedes IMHO. My 2020 has the black open pore wood and it looks and feel so good compared to the scratchy plastic. Anyways, thanks again nd keep it up!

They specifically said that they didn’t need to fix what absolutely isn’t broken. Why needlessly change something nice?

The 2023 and 2019-2023 GLC on a macro level look the same!!! It is going to be difficult for MB to get people to trade in their old GLC for a new GLC because the differences are not great enough to the average consumer!!!

As you said, the non-amg version looks cleaner and the lower graphics makes it look like a proper suv to me and not some wannabe sports car suv

Knob is more convenient imo, at least in 2016 GLC, but I hate that the passenger can also use the knob

I think an easy solution for the lack of volume knobs (which I hate as well) would be to implement some sort of shortcuts with multiple fingers, for example, if you slide 3 fingers up anywhere in the screen at any time and menu location it would up the volume and if you slide down it would lower it

this review would be less confusing and a better comparison if you just compared non-AMG 2020 to non-AMG 2023. then at the end you could show the AMG.
