Imo bad design approach was a strategical move played by bmw. A well calculated plan to attract more attention and be a hot discussion topic by creating controversial designs. Now they might be have done with it so come back to their real character.

@@siddhartha4000 there is another angle to it. By doing back to back bad designs they created disappointments among the fans and car enthusiasts and now suddenly they changed their direction which create a persona that old bmw is back, fuelled euphoria among the all enthusiasts which will eventually boost up the sells.

Oh, so now we have conspiracy theories about BMW. Nice. Their "bad design approach" as you call it, isn't bad at all in my opinion. I really like the new X7, 7 Series, 2 Series, iX. I will never understand the people who hate them. Now that their new models look so different, people hate on them. If they were very similar to previous generations, everyone would say "ThEy LoOk tHe SaMe aS bEfORe. ThEiR dEsIgNerS aRe So LaZy."

I read an interview with BMW’s head of design (not sure if it referenced Van Hooydonk or Dukec) discussing the controversial design direction at BMW. His answer made a lot of sense to me. He explained that BMW believes they have 2 types of customers, each with very different ideas of what they want their car to express about themselves through design. One type is attracted to classic design, and wants to see cars designed with classic BMW details like the traditional kidney grille and Hofmeister kink. The other is attracted to individual expression and innovation through radically new design. These customers don’t necessarily need to see the most classic interpretations of traditional BMW design. They want innovation and newness. In order for BMW to continue growing, BMW big wigs have decided to pursue BOTH groups. They will use certain models, such as the 3 and 5 series, to reach their ‘classic’ customers, and models such as the XM to reach their ‘radically expressive’ customers. Instead of trying to reach everyone with every model (and usually making no one happy), they are using each model line to target a specific group of customers. That’s why there seems to be this fractured design direction. I love cars and automotive design, but my background is in brand management. IMHO, I think this is a very smart direction for the company, and makes sense when the entire strategy is taken into account.

i read it too and i think it’s bullshit , if they made the 3 series and 5 series for their classic customers then the correlation with the M3 wouldn’t have the grill , rather an option to have two different bumper styles but they choose not to . and yes , M series and 3 series are different but everyone mainly looks at the M3 and praises the M340i whilst wishing for a more “classic” front end on the G80 .

I think you like the screen in the interior better in the new X1 compared to the 3-series LCI because the new dashboard in this X1 is designed to have the screen there from the beginning, it's all one piece so to say. The 3-series LCI screen fomr the i4 is just taken and put right on an "old" dashboard as a quick fix and it doesn't fully work.

Agree with everything you said, I also normally prefer M-sport or M looks, but in this car definitely the 'base' looks better to me too. Also the interior screens look better integrated in this case than on IX and LCI 3 series, the small angle on the sides plus it looks like it no longer has that support arm on the right side like the IX which to me looks very cheap. One of the best BMW designs of late...

The ONLY detail I dislike about the design is the DRLs. BMW DRLs symbolise in away the "eyes" of the car and the DRLs are iris surface and when you leave the side and lower area of the iris visible and the upper area hidden it gives the eye a determined look. This X1 has it the other way around, it looks like its not looking straight ahead or it has a kind of surprised look that doesnt fit with the rest of the confident design. Same goes for the facelifted 3 series DRLs.

Similar to your thoughts on preferring the regular over the M Sport package design, I prefer the new 2 series base design over the M Sport. Those gaping triangles in front just make no sense to me and both look oversized and not too well connected with the rest of the front end. The 230i front fascia on the other hand, to me, carries the more traditional and handsome BMW design.

I feel the same about the LCI X4 X-line vs Msport rear bumper shape and design which is also extremely out of place (take a look). The head lights give off a insect bug look which I’m not sure I like. BMW leaving their round angel eyes signature look is disappointing along with all the X line losing fog lights. So they make an X1 traditional styling but they go ahead and ruin the new 7 series and X7. I just can’t understand them!

At first glance of this new x1, I disappointed as it looks just chiseled roughly. But after watched your review, I've got some things I couldn't find myself. At last, it comes looking cool for me and thinking it's one of the most likely candidate for my next car.

Take a look at the new 5 series headlights. It’s literally a line design. Does not carry BMW signature headlight design they were known for.

We are taking about a small cross over. I don't think someone could design a good looking cross over. Like the best looking crossover is the mazda cx30, but not that it is attractive. It is just less ugly than all other

BMW X-Line styling packs on the X1 have always looked like they are trying too hard. IMHO the base model on the DE in a colour is the most attractive for me.

It looks WAY better than the old model. I agree: the M model does not look as good as the basic design. It looks like the front angle is going into the direction of the 70s - a little bit like a shark's nose. I really like that - reminds me of the 320i of my grandfather back in the late 70s. The only thing I really don't like is the fake sand plate in the front: everybody knows, it is painted plstic. So please: let it be black. Thank you very much for the content you are creating! While it is always very entertaining, at the end of each episode I think I learned something. So: Edutainment at its best!!!!

i may be in the minority, but, i want physical buttons for the temperature control and volume. Unfortunately, this is not what the overall car industry is going to keep, they seem to all be migrating toward all digital controls.
