Mercedes Benz EQB catches fire while charging at Malaysia Johor Dealership

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A Mercedes-Benz EQB electric vehicle (EV) caught fire while charging at a car showroom located at Batu 5 along Jalan Skudai here.
Larkin Fire and Rescue Station operation commander Azmi Johar said they received a distress call notifying them about the incident through MERS 999 at 2.25pm today.
He added a fire engine and two Rapid Intervention Motorcycle units with 10 firemen were immediately deployed to the scene.
“When we arrived at the location, we found a Mercedes-Benz EQB model was on fire while the vehicle was being charged.
“The fire destroyed about 90% of the car, 5% of the showroom building structure and as well as 20% of the electric vehicle charging bay,” he said. The car was parked alongside a DC fast charger.
Azmi added that the fire was successfully extinguished before ending the operation at around 3.10pm while the cause of the fire and the estimated loss was under investigation.
The Mercedes EV fire comes in the wake of another dramatic incident involving a Tesla Model Y that was also gutted in a fire in Puchong, Selangor on Oct 16. The car was parked in a public space when it caught fire and 70% of the car was destroyed by the time firemen arrived on the scene. Like the Mercedes EV case, no one was injured in the fire.
Fire Fighter Industry Sdn Bhd said in a blog that the Model Y fire did not exhibit the signature characteristics of a battery fire such as visible jet flames and low-lying white smoke.
It said that the fire could have started from a non-battery source and could potentially escalate into a battery fire because of the battery's proximity to the fire source. - Additional details by CarSifu

For those of you that have experience dealing with lithium strips, you will know how volatile the material is. Once it catches fire, there is no subduing the fire, it burns until everything is burned out.

Those fume is extremely toxic if the fire was coming from the lithium ion battery. The bystanders were standing too close watching and taking video, oblivious to the hazard. While our government is pushing hard for EV adoption, it should also educate the public on the associated risk.

ICE car if caught fire usually do not make explosion. And people can try extinguish it. But for EV, the hazard is much higher for common people to try to extinguish it. So yes the risk is higher. The long trip is more trchnical as you need more plannings. Also I would not be happy to park my car next to an EV. I drive hybrid and is really very happy. 1 full tank from KL to JB, run around 3 days 2 nights and return KL in 1 tank about 830km, with still 140km range left.

Stop speculating and generalising EV cars are prone to fire, you have a PHEV which also has a big battery which could also be subsequently a fire hazard by your definition. @@chestercheng75 I am not hurt just staying don't speculate, and have owned a competitor PHEV to MB, which was faultless for 5 years of ownership . Like another member mentioned battery / EV fires are actually less common than ICE ones but it's a numbers game and there are fewer HEV, PHEV and BEV cars than ICE cars. Also this car owned by someone known to me. Even they are giving the relevant parties more grace to find out what went wrong, which is more than what social media is doing. It could be the cars cooling , it could be the battery or even the DC charger, but that is for the experts to decide. MB is flying down a team from 🇩🇪 to come investigate, so they have been supportive so far.
