    Proud owner of a 1987 turbo diesel and 1995 non turbo. Both are W124 chassis. Some say they were the last true MB, spare no expense when it came to build quality.

    I also have a 1995 non-turbo (3.0L). How does the 2.5L turbo compare to the 3.0L N/A in the W124? I always wondered why they went from turbo to non-turbo, then back to turbo for later W210.

    +Tigerfire75 yes unfortunately the same qualities that made early cars famous is not there. Essentially when the W124 went out of production in 1995 it was the end of an era. Mercedes Benz themselves admits that they went to different production methods in the interest of being more efficient. Basically they went cheaper.

    Wow the amount of pride this video shows is astounding. Sad that Mercs are no longer the best or nothing I blame Chrysler and the trend towards as much tech as possible in every damm car.

    william finnell Really? MB was great until the merger with Chrysler. The spare no expense to build quality that MB had for many years soon went away. 1995 was the last true spare no expense to build quality MB.

    orion deschamps You are so correct! I could not agree more about everything you indicated. Give me the old MB solid built cars. I have a 87 turbo diesel and 95 non turbo diesel. You are right, there is so much pride in this video and what they used to be.

    william finnell Thanks! Do you by chance have a specific article as to where I could read these proven facts that you speak of? Not trying to be an ass and so just curious is all. I love my old school MB W124's diesel work horse cars. I love the solid thunk of the doors when you close them. If only the post 1995 MB cars were as robust as the historical ones.

  • @patrickmichaellangan576

    +Tigerfire75 I don't think that car was called the E-Class at least in America until sometime in the middle 90s (maybe '93, '94 or earlier the W124 sold in Europe was called the E-Class). But the officially named Mercedes E-Class which name we know today was the generation AFTER the W124; the W210.

    Yep, it was the 300 class until model year 1994, when the 190 class became the C class, the 300 the E class, and the SL went from being a part of the S class line (unofficially), into it's own model line. To make the model names easier.

  • @Beethoven80

    In Germany, it was the 200/300 class (at that time, there was only the 190, the 200/300, S, SL and G). It took some time to discover that most people referred to it as an "E" because it often has the "E" designation after the number (which stands for fuel injection). Although there were also D, TD, TE models and those without fuel injection.

    So why did they let their products lose that superiority? Why did they let that slip from the time of this video and today?

  • @finnellwilliam

    @finnellwilliam

    6 жыл бұрын

    Tigerfire75 because they use to over engineer their vehicle and in the early 1990’s figured they could as much as cash if they didn’t. So they stopped, they merged with Chrysler and fucked themselves. They were the best, if you want a car that will last 10...20 years buy a Lexus. If you want a Merc just lease it, or buy get the extended warranty and drop it after 6 years.

    In the 80s MB's were built with very high quality materials, and with very good design (generally). They were expensive, and still are expensive. If lowest overall buy in and operating cost is your goal, a German car isn't for you. Comparing an 87 Cressida to an 87 300E shows a lot of differences - IMO you got more for your money. And in 87 anyway no Japanese maker sold something that competed with the S Class in the US market.
